SELECTIONS - 5 September 2006

POOMA selections:

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kilmore 6-5, 7-1
Mackay 2-4

Today: Kilmore, Tamworth and Mackay are all tracks that I have a positive record at, which is strange given they're hardly strong racing venues. The topweight in race 7, Southern Courage, is first up in Australia after having had 13 start in New Zealand for one win. Mick Price will have him fit for the 1900m trip and his form in NZ is stronger than what his competitors have run against. Might be a reasonable price, too. 1-1 Buan has been a beaten short price favourite from the Moody camp at his only two starts. At both of those runs he's settled back in the field and charged home to finish just behind the placegetters. The step up in trip looks suitable but I'd be a little bit careful about taking a short price, as people might price this one on assumed ability and not realised ability. I'd suggest $2.80 or so would be the right price. At Mackay, Wayne Promfrett has a few runners that look to have real claims. 3-3 Horseguards is first up from NSW and drops in grade to his recent assignments. 4-1 Onalar has been consistent and comes out of a Rocky Class 1 1300m race last time in which he finished a good 4th. If he repeats that run then he'll win here. 6-1 Cambooya looks really well placed though I'm not too sure how good his apprentice jockey is. 6-2 High Ranger has regular rider, Trinity Bannon, on board and is in good form. 6-7 Tenzero has a good record at this track. Could be a Pomfrett trifecta. The slow track at Tamworth knocks it out as a betting propostition.

Yesterday: I was out for a fair while having a longish lunch at the excellent Chairman & Yip restaurant in Canberra so didn't get to see many of the races. If you're ever in Canberra then make sure you go to C&Y and have the duck pancakes and Shantung spice lamb. They're both excellent dishes. Tell 'em I sent you.

POOMAs: Politburo got home comfortably at a handy $3 while Emergence was well beaten, which means another profitable day for the POOMAs.
