Geelong 4-9 Paint The Panther [7,8,10]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Echuca 5-7
Wagga 1-2, 7-3
Comments: A ruffie home at $29 yesterday so that was handy, especially if you got the $4.5K quaddie up there at Caloundra. Geelong 4-9 Paint The Panther took 12 goes to open her place account. That's not the sort of record you want to be with, especially at the $2.40 on the prepost line.

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Kalgoorlie 7-1 Landscapes [23]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Ballarat 5-2
Coffs Harbour 7-2
Kalgoorlie 5-2
Sunshine Coast 5-6, 6-6
Comments: Kalgoorlie 7-1 Landscapes took a while to open his account after racing in Victoria, NSW and QLD before moving West. This is an even field and he must be a chance.
Black Book: Canberra 2-2 Grand Rhumba was very impressive when winning on debut at Orange before an even 4th at Wellington in the Boot there. Should win this. Sunshine Coast 8-6 Sleepy Jackson is a 2YO against open age horses but in two days' time he'd be 3. He was never let go on debut to win clearly and could take running down in this.

SELECTIONS - 28 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Doomben 4-5 Morning Colours [23]
Belmont 8-3 Banner Storm [23]
Murtoa 7-5 Pressure's On [25]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Belmont 1-5
Darwin 1-2, 2-3, 5-4
Moonee Valley 3-1, 5-1, 8-10
Toowoomba 4-4
(* Any updates later on - UPDATED *)
Comments: Doomben 4-5 Morning Colours is really well placed here after stringing together three in a row. The only danger looks to be 11-Yass River. Belmont 8-3 Banner Storm has an 8:5-1-2 record at this track and 4:3-1-0 record at this course. He only has a couple of kilos over the limit after the claim and he looks the goods in this. Murtoa 7-5 Pressure's On ran well enough first up to suggest he has a chance here. Might be a quinella for the Weir stable.
Black Book: Cheltenham 9-6 Allsons went into the BB at his first start and delivered an immediate result next time out. He is still learning what it's all about and if he can get around this tight track then he'll just about get home again. Gold Coast 8-7 Ironside returned from a spell and flopped badly last time. If he does that again then he'll be removed. Moonee Valley 2-2 Grand Duels is another that has been good to us. He's drawn off the track in this so we'll find out how good he is if he can win handily. Moonee Valley 3-1 Hasta Manana can't handle the really heavy tracks and even though MV is not as bad as others when it's wet he probably won't be winning today. The $4 on the morning line is way too short. Murtoa 4-3 Kelvoli will come out of the BB if he can't get home today. Newcastle 3-1 Cheekybynature showed a heap of speed to hold out the filly Behind first up before winning clearly with a huge gap back to 3rd. Behind went into the race as a $1.30 favourite after two placings in black type racings so the form is strong.

Sandown 4-2 Bowl Along [21]
Sandown 6-3 Mr Jenkins [1]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Belmont 4-2, 5-7, 7-6
Morphettville 1-2, 1-5
Randwick 6-1
(* Updates later on - UPDATED - note Sandown r2 selection was a bugger up *)
Comments: That'd be right. As soon as I mention how well July was going we then get a run of 2/10 returning less than $4. Don't have time to comment on them all just recently.
Black Book: Randwick 2-6 Ruby Bre will be much better suited with the step up in trip here and she looks a good chance. Randwick 6-4 Waterfront Lass gets back to a firmer surface today, which she clearly needs so I'm expecting a much improved run from this talented mare.

SELECTIONS - 22 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Hawkesbury 2-7 Queen And Country [8,12]
Sunshine Coast 3-1 Degenda [12]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Alice Springs 3-3, 3-5, 5-3
Bendigo 3-8
Hawkesbury 7-6
Hobart 2-5, 6-6, 7-1, 8-4, 10-2
Kalgoorlie 1-9, 8-3, 8-5
Sunshine Coast 3-1
Warrnambool 2-5, 3-5, 3-10
(* Note - late update at Hawkesbury *)
Comments: Lucky Secret was terrific yesterday winning the Sir John Monash to rack up seven on the trot. Unfortunately, he bled and will get an automatic three month ban from racing. Let's hope he comes back OK. Of the other two black bookers in that race I thought that Vormista's was the best run in the race outside the winner. An inexperienced 3YO filly up again seasoned sprinters, though admittedly hardly A-graders, she would have grabbed 2nd in one more hop, finishing 4th. Stanzout was one place behind her showing he's also come back well. Old champ, Super Elegant, ran last. Surely they won't perservere with him? Sunshine Coast 3-1 Degenda made it three on the trot when winning the big race at Rocky at his last run before a spell. He hasn't won first up in the past, though seems to have improved after those runs, and has to give 2kg to the field so if I can get $2.50 then I might be tempted.

Belmont 5-1, 6-6

Eagle Farm 2-1
Gold Coast 8-10
Moe 7-1, 9-3, 9-9, 10-5
Rosehill 3-4, 8-3
(* Updates at Belmont later on *)
Comments: Bit of a surprise for there to be no selections today but that's the way it is.
Black Book: Caulfield 5-8 Hasta Manana has been a good performer for us over his last 5 runs over jumps. He drops more than a Caulfield Cup in distance and is back on the flat but a forward showing wouldn't surprise, as he's pretty well graded on his old form. Three of our black bookers clash in the Sir John Monash. They've all been really good for us, starting with the unbeaten 6-7 Lucky Secret who could be anything. Caufield can be a tricky track to get around but he does it so easily that it's hard to see him being challenged. 6-6 Stanzout is an up and comer that looks outgraded in this, as does 6-10 Vormista who finished powerfully to win last time when looking in trouble on the turn at Morphettville though she could run into a place. Lucky Secret looks to get a softish lead from Honalee and Stanzout so anything in black and white figures is a good price for him, I reckon.

SELECTIONS - 20 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Townsville 1-1 Cupbearer [10]
Townsville 3-4 Jazzoom [15]
Townsville 3-5 Mister Stevens [7,11,12,15]
Townsville 6-1 Cortes [1]
Tamworth 9-1 Chain Of Stars [1]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Goulburn 7-6
Townsville 4-2, 5-10
Comments: Townsville 1-1 Cupbearer goes OK and seems to be a bit above these, which is why he has to carry a big weight. The prepost fight of $2.50 seems about right. Townsville 3-5 Mister Stevens goes fast and in three runs from a spell has kept going fast to win comprehensively. Looks likely to win again. The other selection, 3-4 Jazzoom looks the quinella horse there. Townsville 6-1 Cortes is 2/2 at this track and has run well at the trip in stronger races around Brisbane. He also has to carry a big weight but is drawn to get the right run so should go close. Tamworth 9-1 Chain Of Stars comes off a couple of strong wins around the region. She has to overcome the wide draw so I'd want to see pretty big odds to have a go.
Black Book: We've had a big opinion of Townsville 5-10 Saint Sebastian since his won his Maiden. He's pretty well placed in this for a successful first up run.

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Ipswich 1-1, 7-5
York 1-1, 7-4
Wyong 9-8
Comments: Wyong 5-3 Spirit Of Shinko has a terrific record at this track and trip. He hasn't run a place at his 2nd start from a spell in two previous preparations and he's a little outgraded in this but if $3 is available then it's worth having a go.

SELECTIONS - 18 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Belmont 5-11 Wongkaew [23]
Doomben 5-1 Lennon [23]
Geelong 3-7 Commands Gold [16]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Darwin 2-1, 6-2
Geelong 1-2, 7-9
Comments: Belmont 5-11 Wongkaew is maiden trying to win against a field of mostly non-maidens and including multiple race winners. However, her form in good races last prep was OK and her three runs from a spell suggest she'll be in the finish today. Doomben 5-1 Lennon was really impressive first up when powering home from back in the field to win. He might be a pretty good horse in the making. If he is then he should win this race. Geelong 3-7 Commands Gold has run 3 2nds at her 3 runs so is eligible for a Maiden. Lines up here in an Open Fillies' race so David Hayes must think she's up to it. Expect 2-Petite Briefs to run better back on top of the ground in that race.
Black Book: Belmont 2-6 Cagey Lady looked like it had landed the prize at double figure odds for us last time out but the photo went against her. Meets the winner of that race, Fragancia, 1kg better though the step up in trip might suit the other horse more. They could run the quinella again. Doomben 8-4 Ironside is first up here at 1350m and I would have preferred him in a slightly shorter race. He was dynamic at the Gold Coast two starts before a spell and stamped himself as having a lot of talent. He then ran home well last time as favourite before going for a break.

Taree 3-10, 5-1, 6-2
Comments: Taree 4-6 Pimpala Storm is an in and out type that might be suited at the mile trip after two 1400m runs from a spell, including a win. He'll be e/w odds and at around $8 is worth a go.

Geelong 6-1 High Tszyu [23]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Geelong 9-1, 10-5
Murwillumbah 2-1
Comments: 5/9 was a welcome result after 1/8 on Saturday, giving us a profitable weekend. Geelong 5-6 Zor has been consistent without yet breaking his duck. Looks like a pretty strong chance in this. Geelong 6-1 High Tszyu is becoming a costly conveyance but he drops a couple of grades here and should go close.
Black Book: Geelong 6-3 Red Cord has obviously had problems. He's been entered and withdrawn a few times lately. He has talent and I want to assess his run today.

Mornington 4-9, 8-1
Mudgee 1-2, 1-4
Port Augusta 5-1
Sunshine Coast 1-9
(* Updated at Kalgoorlie later on - UPDATED *)
Comments: After a spectacular 1/8 yesterday we follow up with 9 selections today. May they do better.
Black Book: Grafton 8-4 Derivative Receipt ran well enough in the Cup Prelude to be a chance here. Launceston 7-8 Geronimo Stilton is the horse I nominated a couple of weeks back that could only be backed on Tote Tasmania and it duly won at $16. He jumps to a Class 2 here but he might have an e/w chance again.

Moonee Valley 3-4 Racy Alice [1]
Moonee Valley 5-1 Wavelength [1]
Morphettville 6-2 Road Worker [10]
Morphettville 7-1 Deledio [8]
Murtoa 5-2 Forest Murmur [25]
Murtoa 8-4 Roll Me [24]
Murtoa 9-1 Tuscan Prince [21]
Newcastle 4-5 Behind [12]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Belmont 1-1, 5-3
Doomben 5-8
Gold Coast 4-1
Moonee Valley 4-7
Morphettville 2-7
Randwick 1-3, 5-1
Toowoomba 4-10
(* Updates at Belmont later on - UPDATED *)
Comments: Moonee Valley 3-4 Racy Alice won by from here to over the road at Ballarat last time, bringing up her hat trick. This is the hardest race she's ever contested but it's hard to knock winning form though I will look for e/w odds. Moonee Valley 5-1 Wavelength also gapped them at Sandown last time on a day when those near the front seemed to be advantaged. She's well in after the claim and I rate her a genuine even money chance. Morphettville 6-2 Road Worker is a big, grey lump of a thing that seems to have overcome his early penchant for running 2nd by snaring a few wins. He's had a freshen up but the 1200m might be a touch short for him, as he's more of a grinder than a dasher. I expect he'll run in the first three so might work some trifectas around him. Morphettville 7-1 Deledio has appreciated the recent drop in grade from black type company to win three of her four subsequent runs. Has to carry 59k after the claim (6kg above the limit) and even though he's won with 58kg (4kg above) I think he might be up against it here having to give 5kg+ to the field. Murtoa 5-2 Forest Murmur has run a couple of improved races at his last two and looks like he should have an e/w chance today. Murtoa 8-4 Roll Me should be primed to win at his 4th run from a spell, same as he did last preparation. He goes well at the track and trip and will be nice e/w odds. Murtoa 9-1 Tuscan Prince is only 1/11 but looks pretty well placed in this race and you'd think he'll go close. Newcastle 4-5 Behind comes out of a couple of black type races in which she ran a couple of good placings at Caulfield. She showed speed on both ocassions and you'd have to think that one of the first starters would need to be outstanding for her to get beaten in this.
Black Book: Belmont 2-2 Campo Di Grano is having yet another run at 1000m, his 15th in his 15 run career. He was so far in front on the corner last time that it's amazing he could only finish 4th. He gets in with a light weight here and might keep going. Morphettville 3-1 Grand Duels did the right thing for us last time when first up. He'll take a lot of benefit from the run and should go close again although the odds on price currently on offer is not at all attractive. Newcastle 10-1 Misasio led them up at Canterbury before dropping out first up. That was on a heavy track and the better going should help here.

SELECTIONS - 13 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Canberra 7-2 Johanrutz [21]
Wangaratta 10-3 Funover [24]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Canberra 6-1, 8-1
Wangaratta 1-10, 10-11
Comments: Canberra 7-2 Johanrutz goes very well at the Acton track and steps up here from 1400m to 1750m. He has run OK over 1550m in one of those weak Canterbury Class 3 races so I would want to get e/w odds today to get interested and I think his good track form will guarantee a price of around $3. Wangaratta 10-3 Funover has a poor winning strike rate of 2/28 but might be well placed at the distance after a freshen up of a month, as he seems to go best at around 1600m.
Black Book: Rockhampton 5-2 Laletta jumped quickly in a poor field of maidens, fought for the lead, held the front position into the straight, ignited the afterburners at the 200m mark and disappeared into the distance to win by 6.5L. This is a harder race but if that performance was the real thing then she'll go close again.

SELECTIONS - 12 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Ballarat 5-1 Mr Jenkins [12]
Northam 5-1 Ready Freddy [23]
Northam 6-5 Fight To Live [16]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Ballarat 3-1
Ipswich 8-8
Northam 5-4
(* Updates at Northam much later in the day - UPDATED *)
Comments: Ballarat 5-1 Mr Jenkins comes off a couple of Restricted 2nds into this Class 4 event, which looks really suitable. He's obviously got some talent but I won't want to take less than about $2.50 and that probably won't be on offer. Northam 5-1 Ready Freddy is not as well weighted as I'd want to be taking around $3.50 though this race doesn't have much depth. Not much of a day, really.

SELECTIONS - 11 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Belmont 5-5 Moss Street [23]
Eagle Farm 8-4 Moonlight Lily [19]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Belmont 1-6, 2-1
Canterbury 7-5
Eagle Farm 1-6, 8-4
Grafton 8-1
Murray Bridge 1-13, 5-11
Sandown 1-2, 8-3
(* updates at Belmont later on - UPDATED *)
Comments: Belmont 5-5 Moss Street doesn't have much of a winning record but looks like he has an each way chance in what looks like an even event. Eagle Farm 8-4 Moonlight Lily slaughtered them at Toowoomba last time and the step up in trip looks really suitable. She looks a good quaddie anchor in this.
Black Book: Canterbury 5-2 Waterfront Lass is a tough and talented filly that looks pretty well placed in this, her first assignment in town. She's double figure odds on the morning line and I'd be happy with half those odds.

SELECTIONS - 10 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Townsville 2-1 Chief Red Feather [3]
Townsville 6-3 Castle Hill Lad [15]
Townsville 7-7 Three N Sixpence [10]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Dubbo 8-16
Townsville 4-8
Warrnambool 2-4, 7-1
Warwick Farm 1-1, 3-6
Comments: Our POOMA snuck home yesterday at $5 so that was handy. Townsville 2-1 Chief Red Feather goes OK and has had a month off since his last start win. He's got to carry the grandstand here so might be an attractive price of $5+. Townsville 6-3 Castle Hill Lad had his first run since moving from Victoria and ran an OK 4th. He'll be improved. The little feller with the big heart, Back Of House, looks very well placed in that race and they could be the quinella. Townsville 7-7 Three N Sixpence has drawn the car park and it seems unlikely that he'll get much of a run given his racing style so unless he's $16+ then I won't get too interested. Race 8 on the card there is fantastic with terrific local sprinters Captain Wheland, River Hunter, Strictly Smart and Hotelier clashing. Captain Wheland will lead them up, obviously, but he's not quite at his best over 1200m. If Strictly Smart starts $4+ then I'll take a 1x2 staggered bet on him.

SELECTIONS - 9 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Muswellbrook 4-7 Medowie Motivator [25]
(* Note that I had brain fade earlier on and put up 7-4 instead of 4-7 as today's POOMA *)
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Muswellbrook 3-1, 9-2
Comments: It goes without sating that the meeting at Soggy Creek has been abandoned bringing July's total to 6. With racing confined to the track I hate most, Muswellbrook, any inclination to have a go are well and truly quashed. The non-POOMA, Hellbound Lujain, would be a huge chance on a dry track. Its wet form is poor but expect it to lead them up.
Black Book: Muswellbrook 9-1 Ironside has a heap of weight to carry and, being a get back type, will have his work cut out in this but he's got a touch of class and that might be enough to do the job here. If the track is dry then Hellbound Lujain comes right into his own. He'll cross and lead from his wide gate and be hard to run down.

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Grafton 2-3, 4-2
Kalgoorlie 5-4
(* Updates at Kalgoorlie later on - UPDATED *)
Comments: Two selections today. Hopefully they can do better than yesterday when we had too many seconds and not enough wins.
Black Book: Mildura 3-3 Kelvoli steamed home when 3rd before being a tad weak at the end when 2nd last time. He looks pretty well placed in this race.

Kembla Grange 2-8, 6-3
Morphettville 5-1, 8-8
Rosehill 3-6, 8-10
Toowoomba 3-4
(* Updates at Belmont later on *)
Comments: A bunch of POOMAs today. Saint Angelo has been beaten for us at his last two starts so hopefully he can make up some of the loss today. Scenic Rule looks the best of them.
Black Book: Morphettville 5-1 Vormista is obviously very talented and looks pretty well placed in this. I'll want to see a sold $2.30 to have a go. Rosehill 1-6 Ruby Bre ploughed through the bog from well back on the Kensington track to win last time. I made a note to keep an eye on her and we'll get attractive odds.

Hawkesbury 1-3 Lion Kind [16,21]
Mackay 4-9 Rocka Boy [21]
Werribee 3-4 The Secret [25]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Strathalbyn 1-2, 1-3, 1-5, 6-2
Werribee 1-2, 1-5
(* Any updates later on - UPDATED *)
Comments: Nearly got a $12 black booker home yesterday but she was caught in the last bound. No time for analysis this morning.
Black Book: Cranbourne 8-10 Red Cord has obviously had a lot of problems and resumes here for a new stable. He has talent and it wouldn't surprise me to see him run a race. Grafton 7-12 Derivative Receipt has run a couple of 2nds for us as a black booker at e/w odds. He's only lightly raced and a forward showing wouldn't surprise, although this is a tough race.

SELECTIONS - 4 July 2007
POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])
Ballarat 7-6 Doin' Thehardyards [1]
Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):
Ballarat 8-5
Belmont 2-2
Gawler 6-7
(* Any updates later on *)
Comments: We managed to get home a $6 winner yesterday, which was handy. Ballarat 7-6 Doin' Thehardyards got into the fast lane and flogged them at Cranbourne last time. This is a pretty even field and on the wet track it'll come down to who gets into the best ground first. I would want to see around $6 to get interested in this feller.
Black Book: Belmont 3-8 Cagey Lady settled down last, came deep, took over at the 200m mark and went to the post under a full Nelson to break her duck at Northam last time. The increase in trip suits again and she should go close again. Our old mate Belmont 5-1 Camp Di Grano flogged along in front and, instead of wilting like he has at his last few runs, kept going strongly to the line. He could do it again in this. Gawler 2-2 Allsons was very short in the market at his debut here three weeks ago. He settled just off the lead, made a move before the corner, ran around like a duck on the corner losing a heap of ground but picked up the bit really nicely to hit the line strongly behind a smart type. I'm happy to take $2.50.

Comments: Today's POOMA must be some sort of chance otherwise it doesn't look like much of a day. Updates later on if any.

Comments: Another day where every track on the eastern seaboard is rain affected, which creates lots of ruffies to consider today. Rockhampton 6-2 Luna Lass has beaten most of her competitors home in two previous runs so she would have to be a good chance in this. Werribee 7-3 Kitz Lane got home nicely to win a 3YO staying event at MV last time out. These Restriced races can be complete lotteries so I'm not at all interested in the even money served up on the morning line.
Black Book: Launceston 1-2 Geronimo Stilton was one of our ruffies a few weeks back. He settled midfield and ran to the line OK, beating home 8 of his rivals, to finish 6th beaten 5L in a performance that was an improvement on his previous form and belied his 50/1 price. I've made a note to watch him next time out in a weak Maiden field, which he gets here. It looks like most TABs are not including race 1 in their coverage so Tote Tasmania is the only option.
Bowraville: If you haven't seen a race at Bowraville then you're in for a treat. I don't know if it's the smallest track in Australia but with a circumference of just 1200m it would have to go close. Races are run over 1000m, 1370m (they start at the top of the straight and do a full lap!), 2000m and 2200m (they go around twice!). You sometimes see a jockey 'work out' how to ride the track by taking off early. The most successful jockeys at Bowraville today are P Graham, R Spokes and M Dolendo.
