SELECTIONS - 31 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ballina 8-2 Crystal Point [19]
Hobart 6-1 Blunova [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 4-5
Hobart 7-3
Kalgoorlie 3-2, 4-5, 5-3, 6-7
Warrnambool 4-13, 5-1, 6-3

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Two selections today meaning that we're going to at least eke out a small profit this month, which will continue the loss-win-loss-win monthly record for the POOMAs so far this year. Ballina 8-2 Crystal Point really flogged them 2nd up at Coffs Harbour in this grade. Rises 2kg but it's hard to see how they beat him. Hobart 6-1 Blunova doesn't win out of turn but when he does he puts a space on them, as he did last time when winning over this course by 3.5L. This lot are in and out types that take turns at winning so I don't want to go anywhere near the $3 on the morning line.

SELECTIONS - 30 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 1-1 Elliotto [18]
Belmont 5-1 Basto Man [18]
Doomben 4-10 Sneaky Squirrel [10]
Rosehill 1-2 Ten Of Hearts [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 3-1
Cheltenham 2-1
Kembla Grange 1-7
Rosehill 6-4

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 1-1 Elliotto brought up his hat trick with an easy win over this course and distance in this class two weeks ago. Drops in weight after the claim (though stays the same over the limit) and it's hard to see him not being in the finish again. Belmont 5-1 Basto Man hadn't won for two years before winning nicely first up. Like Elliotto he stays in the same grade and at the same trip but rises 2kg in weight, which should all add up to his having an excellent chance. Doomben 4-10 Sneaky Squirrel started favourite in an R0 race at his first run in a month over the 1010m trip at this track last week and didn't have a lot of luck when a 4.1L 9th. Had previously run 2nd over this course and at nice odds should run a race for us. Rosehill 1-2 Ten Of Hearts was rewarded for his career consistency with his 5th win from 24 starts over the 1100m trip at this track at his last run. He really loves this track with his last 9 runs here reading 234212221. 1200m might be as far as he wants it but at the 100m mark he's going to be in there fighting.

Black Book: Caulfield 7-8 Moreton Bay put up an outstanding performance to just miss winning first up at Flemington 3 weeks ago. His 2nd up form is not that good but he hasn't stepped up to this trip before when doing it so perhaps Rod Douglas has worked him out. Has drawn poorly but will get back anyway and if he's the Caulfield Cup chance that I think he is then we'll see another big run today. Doomben 6-10 Slim Pickings is not a noted first up performer and has not won at a distance below 1300m. If there's a heap of speed on then he can run into a place late at nice e/w odds. Rosehill 4-4 Neroli is going to go very close to winning this race and looks the best bet of the day. She thumped home late first up and the step up in trip is ideal.

SELECTIONS - 29 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 8-4 Test Century [18]
Tamworth 4-14 Konin [19]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Albury 1-8, 7-2, 8-3
Geelong 6-1, 7-8
Sunshine Coast 5-4, 6-1

Comments: Geelong 8-4 Test Century got the chocolates for us as a POOMA at $5.80 first up over this course last time out. Had a cosy run that day and won't get that here so will need luck but it's in his favour that he can handle the synthetic surface. Around $7 looks right to me. Tamworth 4-14 Konin must be annoying the poop out of trainer and part-owner Mack Griffith given the horse's 8 placings from 8 starts. I've had horses with Mack and he's a good feller so I hope this one can get home for POOMA supporters, as well as connections but if you've seen this one race then you'll know she hasn't got much instestinal fortitude, albeit she has more than the St Kilda football team.

SELECTIONS - 28 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Northam 5-3 Port Regis [6]
Northam 6-1 On The Carpet [10]
Rockhampton 4-7 Plucky Prawn [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gosford 1-6, 6-11
Northam 8-1, 8-3
Sale 7-7

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Northam 5-3 Port Regis took 27 starts to break his duck but that was only his 3rd run since coming to Perth from Victoria. He's drawn well and will get a good run with the in form P King on board so I'm happy to follow up on him. Northam 6-1 On The Carpet ran well for 3rd in this grade and over this course last time out when drawing barrier 12 of 12. Has drawn much better here and is in with a great chance. Rockhampton 4-7 Plucky Prawn is one of those horrible selections that come out of systems every so often. He's having his 16th run and is still trying to win his Maiden. He's $5.50 on the morning line, which seems about $10 light to me. The only saving grace in terms of his chances is that the rest of them look pretty legless, as well.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

SELECTIONS - 27 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 1-1 Pure Fire [8,18]
Belmont 2-1 Solar Ice [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Morphettville 2-4, 6-1

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 1-1 Pure Fire won easily first up in this class over a slightly shorter trip. Only goes up 1.5kg so you'd think that unless one of the first starters is really good then she'll be winning again. Belmont 2-1 Solar Ice arrived just in time to dead heat at his first start. Drops in weight while staying in the same grade so, like Pure Fire, he should be hard to beat.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

SELECTIONS - 26 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: Nothing worth backing today, as far as I can see, though if Newcastle 5-1 Country Tide starts at silly odds of $6+ then I might have a go.

Monday, August 25, 2008

SELECTIONS - 25 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bairnsdale 9-3

Comments: Nothing today though the non-POOMA look like it's got a good chance.

Sunday, August 24, 2008

SELECTIONS - 24 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sunshine Coast 6-1 La Marianne [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Hobart 2-2, 2-12, 4-3, 9-1
Kalgoorlie 6-1, 7-5
Mornington 1-1
Sunshine Coast 5-2
Taree 3-10

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Sunshine Coast 6-1 La Marianne has improved once she's stepped up to a mile with two wins and a narrow 2nd from her last three runs. If she runs up to her last effort then she should win this but will be around $1.50 so can go around without me.

Saturday, August 23, 2008

SELECTIONS - 23 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gold Coast 3-3 Supercilious [7]
Gold Coast 4-1 Kane Mochi [20]
Gold Coast 6-1 Leapfrog [7]
Toowoomba 4-3 Jarhnne [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 2-7
Gold Coast 3-1
Mildura 4-4
Moonee Valley 7-11, 8-8
Morphettville 3-2, 4-3, 5-8
Toowoomba 2-3, 4-1, 7-10

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Gold Coast 3-3 Supercilious comes off a non-TAB win at Beaudesert over this trip a week ago. Has a win and 5 placings from 10 goes at this track and this field is not strong so he must be a chance. Gold Coast 4-1 Kane Mochi won his Maiden easily here at his first start and then finished 2L behind Swiss Ace at Eagle Farm (albeit with no weight). If he's anywhere near right then you'd think he'll be winning this. Gold Coast 6-1 Leapfrog was backed from 9/1 into 7/2 when leading throughout over this course at his first start. This looks well within scope but I'm not too excited about the $2.10 on the morning line. Toowoomba 4-3 Jarhnne ran well first up in a Class 2 race before going one better last time when dropping back a grade. Steps back up to a Class 2 and looks to have a top chance from her good draw.

Friday, August 22, 2008

SELECTIONS - 22 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canberra 4-4 Brisk Crown [7]
Geelong 4-1 Fuduchonne [7,18]
Geelong 8-9 Double Reward [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canberra 6-4, 7-2, 8-1
Geelong 7-4, 10-4, 10-13
Townsville 4-1

Comments: A few selections today, which we haven't seen for a while. Canberra 4-4 Brisk Crown got home at long odds over this course and from this barrier draw second up from a spell. Only rises 0.5kg for that win but this lot seem to take turns at winning so I'm not confident of a repeat performance but he'll be nice odds so worth an e/w bet. Geelong 4-1 Fuduchonne started favourite and led throughout at his debut run here two weeks ago. Is up against some city performed horses but he's proven on the all weather surface so should be a chance although Dwayne Dunn has chosen to ride the stablemate, Estee. Geelong 8-9 Double Reward is another who relished his first go on the all weather track when running out an easy winner as favourite in Maiden company. Looks well placed here and should run well.

Thursday, August 21, 2008

SELECTIONS - 21 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ipswich 7-1
Northam 9-7

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: 3 placings from 3 yesterday including a rare poor ride from W Pike which saw Gambero fail to win by a wart. Nothing today unless something pops up at Northam once final details are in.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

SELECTIONS - 20 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 1-1 Son Of Thunder [18]
Belmont 4-5 Gambero [4]
Doomben 6-7 Rock My Roof [14]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 6-9
Gosford 6-6
Sandown 3-6

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 1-1 Son Of Thunder resumed from a spell with a smart on pace win over this course 11 days ago. Rises 4kg against the limit weight but this is no harder and he should be fitter for the run so I think he'll run first or second in this. Belmont 4-5 Gambero thundered home for a good first up win before coming into town and getting bogged down in the heavy that day. Returned to Northam and steamed home again to win comprehensively. He might be quite a smart type and this race looks well within his scope. Doomben 6-7 Rock My Roof comes from a system that has very few selections and has a really good strike rate and profit so let's hope this guy can make it three in a row today after two wins at the Sunshine Coast, the latest on the all weather surface. He'll work forward from his wide gate to race in front or outside the leader and will be in there at the business end at good odds.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

SELECTIONS - 19 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Rockhampton 4-4
Wagga 4-11, 6-4, 8-5

Comments: A nice win by our selection yesterday at a juicy $5.20. It's worth remembering my comment about the strength of an RB57 race being no harder than a Maiden so when horses are coming off their first win and look to have potential then they should always be included in your bets. Nothing today and the fields look particularly average so definitely keep your wallet shut.

Monday, August 18, 2008

SELECTIONS - 18 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Muswellbrook 7-5 Adam's Eve [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Echuca 2-4, 3-12, 9-11
Queanbeyan 1-9

Comments: Muswellbrook 7-5 Adam's Eve only has to run up to her Maiden win here 8 days ago to be in the finish of this. These RB57 races are about the same strength as a Maiden so I'm happy to take her one out in the last leg of a quaddie.

Sunday, August 17, 2008

SELECTIONS - 17 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 7-10 Mythol [10]
Kalgoorlie 9-1 Secchio [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 1-7, 2-13, 6-11, 8-4, 8-11
Horsham 3-2, 3-3
Kalgoorlie 4-2, 4-6, 7-1
Narromine 2-7, 4-2

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Kalgoorlie 7-10 Mythol has been in good recent form in this grade including a win here two starts back. The drop in trip will suit and she'll be a chance at each way odds. Kalgoorlie 9-1 Secchio drops in grade and rises in weight for his last start win over this course two weeks ago. He doesn't tend to put two wins together and doesn't win out of turn so I'm not going anywhere near the $4 on the morning line.

Saturday, August 16, 2008

SELECTIONS - 16 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 4-1 Chachi [18]
Rosehill 3-1 Rednrich [18]
Toowoomba 4-1 Rocklet [8]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Morphettville 1-5, 7-12, 8-2
Newcastle 1-4
Toowoomba 3-1, 6-10

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 4-1 Chachi did something he'd never done before when winning on August 2nd - come from back in the field. Rises in grade but drops a tad in weight so he should be a chance again. Rosehill 3-1 Rednrich is one of those horses that doesn't string two together but is always consistent. Looks poorly weighted in this but will be close to the pace and should be thereabouts at the finish. Toowoomba 4-1 Rocklet looked a good thing on paper and that's how it turned out last run. The step up in trip will suit and she looks a genuine $1.50 shot.

Black Book: Rosehill 7-11 Neroli hasn't raced for over a year so it's a watch race only.

Friday, August 15, 2008

SELECTIONS - 15 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 8-3 Proscenium Arch [6,7]
Geelong 10-1 Choisism [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 7-1, 8-13, 9-2
Goulburn 1-7
Ipswich 8-3
Scone 8-5

Comments: Geelong 8-3 Proscenium Arch was narrowly beaten by Views over this course two starts back before making amends last time. Drops in weight on only rises a bit in class so he should go very close. Views runs well at this track so he'd have to be a chance and they might be OK odds with Gran Sasso in the race, as he looks likely to start favourite. Geelong 10-1 Choisism returned from a spell and led throughout to do the job nicely here. Has had a freshen up again and I've very happy to take him one out in quaddies.

Thursday, August 14, 2008

SELECTIONS - 14 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Northam 6-2
Sale 5-1, 6-7

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Nothing much happening today though I might get interested in Hawkesbury 6-1 Country Tide if e/w odds are available. He was a winning $9 POOMA two starts back before being beaten by a POOMA selection on the day last time out. He'll need to begin well from his outside draw but has enough pace to race outside of logical front runner Nevaseenitbrighta and should be in the finish.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

SELECTIONS - 13 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 6-4
Gawler 7-6
Sandown 5-9, 5-12, 6-4, 6-5

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Gee, the selection yesterday went about as well as St Kilda on the weekend. Was gone 200m out. The race was won by a 6YO having his first start, which dashed home in impressive style. Good luck to his obviously patient connections. No POOMAs today though if there's a track upgrade at Canterbury then we could get one with 5-11 Disciplined. It'll be interesting to see how the Rockhampton flyer, Aspiran, goes first up at Eagle Farm today in race 5. She looked fantastic at her first two runs and then was surprisingly beaten as a $1.30 shot before going for a spell. Resumed with an emphatic win and then went for a break again and it might be that she performs best when fresh. The other one I'll be watching is in race 1 at Gawler - 10 Miss Leanta. This is a much easier race than her first run at Bendigo when midfield over 1300m. She has a 4kg apprentice on board so might just be having a run to fit her for a step up in trip but she wouldn't need to have improved much to be a chance in this at good e/w odds.

Black Book: Doomben 8-11 Dillinger was disappointing on face value Saturday week ago over 1110m. In hindsight he was never a chance, as they went too slow early to allow him to get into the race but he did rattle home late for 4th. The step up to 1400m is obviously going to suit but I think he'll be poor value so am happy to watch him go around (unless I can get $4+).

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

SELECTIONS - 12 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Mackay 1-2 Nothing To Chance [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mackay 3-3
Taree 4-5

Comments: Mackay 1-2 Nothing To Chance looks the winner here and I'd suggest that the $2.50 on the morning line looks good value even if she has drawn the outside gate. She's frustrated connections so far with 4 placings from 4 goes but if she runs up to her last start effort then she'll beat home the main danger, Inthelight, who went well on debut. Nothing To Chance ran 2nd to Rontgen with Howatch 3rd last time out. Howatch is a multiple winner and would be a $1.20 shot in this field, which is why I think that our pick should win.

Monday, August 11, 2008

SELECTIONS - 11 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Murwillumbah 5-3 Detected [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Murwillumbah 8-6

(* UniTAB is currently experiencing problems. Any updates when it's fixed *)

Comments: Murwillumbah 5-3 Detected looks ideally placed in this. Being by Zeditave he's much better suited on top of the ground, which he gets here. He should lead or be right on the pace and I'm pretty keen to have a go, especially at the morning line odds of around $6.

Sunday, August 10, 2008

SELECTIONS - 10 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 1-2 Feint [10,18]
Wagga 5-1 Cigar Man [10]
Wagga 5-3 Commands Interest [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cairns 4-8, 5-4
Hobart 1-6, 7-1, 8-4
Kalgoorlie 1-5, 7-13

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: I hate it when there's more than one pick in a race, as neither of them tend to win which hurts the old stats a bit. No comments but fingers crossed.

Saturday, August 09, 2008

SELECTIONS - 9 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 5-1 Elliotto [18]
Newcastle 8-2 Universal Pack [18]
Morphettville 3-1 Miss Blake [15]
Toowoomba 2-9 Miss Bellissima [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 4-3
Eagle Farm 1-5, 4-3
Morphettville 3-1, 5-6, 8-9
Rosehill 7-4

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 5-1 Elliotto is a consistent type who notched up another win on a slow track last run. He seems pretty well placed here and I expect him to go close again. Newcastle 8-2 Universal Pack rises 2kg for his comfortable win over this course two weeks ago. I'm not too sure he's that well in at the weights and from the gate so I'd want around $8 to have a go. Morphettville 3-1 Miss Blake is going to be a short price to make it two in a row in this race. She's another that doesn't look a certainty given the weights so I'm not taking anything less than $2.50. Toowoomba 2-9 Miss Bellissima ran a terrific race from a wide gate for 3rd here a month ago. Hasn't drawn ideally in this but I expect her to run a good race.

Black Book: Flemington 5-7 Moreton Bay seemed to run like a different horse at his last run before a spell in the Albury Cup. If he hadn't drawn off the track then I'd be pretty happy to have an e/w crack.

Friday, August 08, 2008

SELECTIONS - 8 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 5-7 Test Century [1]
Geelong 7-1 Husspirata [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canberra 7-6, 8-8
Geelong 4-7, 6-6, 9-1
Gunnedah 2-1, 3-7, 6-4
Sunshine Coast 5-4

Comments: Geelong 5-7 Test Century resumes from a spell for a new stable and probably won't find a much easier race to break his duck in, as there only look to be a few chances. We haven't had a System 1 selection for a little while and it's got a good record so fingers crossed for this one, which might go around at OK odds. Geelong 7-1 Husspirata has always shown some talent and finally broke through at this track at his 10th start over 2000m last time out. Settled back in the field, made a long, searching run around them 1000m out and kept the run going to beat Catlist. That horse came out and won at his next start so the form should hold up here and I expect him to go close to winning.

Thursday, August 07, 2008

SELECTIONS - 7 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Rockhampton 2-4 Symatina [10]
Rockhampton 5-5 Royal Counsel [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 5-2
Kalgoorlie 1-3, 6-2, 6-8

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Rockhampton 2-4 Symatina goes well at this track and drops back from a Class 3 1100m race to Class 2 1000m event, which should suit her. Can settle on the speed and I expect her to go pretty close. Rockhampton 5-5 Royal Counsel won his Maiden in a dead-heat from a carpark draw over this course 6 runs back and he has Chris Whitely to steer so I expect him to go OK at nice e/w odds.

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

SELECTIONS - 6 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sandown 1-1 Tassology [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kembla Grange 8-8
Sandown 4-8

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Sandown 1-1 Tassology came from last to win here last time. Drops back to 1200m and rises 4.5kg in weight so, while she should be a good chance, I don't want to take less than $4.

Black Book: Sandown 6-4 Moondancing's last start win was quite remarkable, as she looked no hope a furlong out before reeling off a very quick final sectional to win decisively. She'll be back in the field again and if they can swoop down the middle of the track today then she looks unbeatable.

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

SELECTIONS - 5 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Coffs Harbour 7-4 Crystal Point [19]
Coffs Harbour 8-5 Pennants [20]
Townsville 4-3 Bronze Queen [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 8-11
Coffs Harbour 8-5
Townsville 1-2, 7-10
Wodonga 4-5

Comments: Coffs Harbour 7-4 Crystal Point returned from a spell in obviously fine fettle with a comprehensive win at Grafton. That was an RB67 but was probably a harder race given it was over the carnival so I think he'll be winning this. The only concern is that he's a 6YO and only having his 6th start so he's clealy had problems. Coffs Harbour 8-5 Pennants has had a freshen up since racing over a mile nearly 8 weeks ago. He's 3/4 first up but has never raced at less than 1200m so I'd want a fair price to back him - around $3.50. Townsville 4-3 Bronze Queen won three on the trot at out of town tracks before drawing 16 of 16 on a slow track here and never getting into the race last time out. She's probably an e/w chance in this.

Monday, August 04, 2008

SELECTIONS - 4 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Darwin 2-4 Iwanttobreakfree [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Darwin 1-1, 3-10, 4-3, 4-4, 4-6, 4-7, 6-5, 7-1, 8-1, 8-3, 8-7, 8-8, 9-6
Pakenham 1-14, 3-5

(* Any updates at Darwin later on *)

Comments: Darwin 2-4 Iwanttobreakfree should be ready to strike after two 2nds since resuming from a spell. These races can be lotteries but it's worth noting that my systems have an 11/19 record at the track at a healthy profit so he should be a good chance.

Sunday, August 03, 2008

SELECTIONS - 3 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Cranbourne 8-3 Sir Charlemagne [18]
Hobart 6-1 Twenty Grand [18]
Sunshine Coast 8-4 Alright Man [6,7]
Wagga 2-4 Baggy [7]
Wagga 5-5 El Veloz [16]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 4-4, 5-8, 6-7
Cranbourne 3-14, 5-1
Hamilton 5-1, 7-10
Hobart 1-9, 4-6, 6-4, 8-2
Kalgoorlie 7-3, 8-5, 8-8
Sunshine Coast 3-8
Wagga 2-2, 3-7, 3-10, 4-11, 7-4

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Cranbourne 8-3 Sir Charlemagne looks pretty well graded after two good wins at this track. He's surprisingly short on the morning line given the topweight must be a big chance so it'll be a watch race for me, though I'll put them both in a quaddie. Hobart 6-1 Twenty Grand won nicely first up at his first run back from a spell. He's 0/2 second up from a spell but has had a 4 week freshen up so should run well. Sunshine Coast 8-4 Alright Man had his first start in Queensland when winning as favourite in a Maiden over this course. This is a much harder race so he's going to need to have improved to win this. Wagga 2-4 Baggy finally won another race at the TAB meeting at Narrandera. He's a consistent type so should be a chance in the small field. Wagga 5-5 El Veloz doesn't win out of turn but neither do any of his rivals so if it's his turn today, which is how these races seem to work, then he'll win the race.

Toowoomba 4-1, 6-3

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: I know he'll be a longshot today but I'd be a little wary of Selsley in race 6 at Morphettville today. I may be speaking out of my pocket, as I had $50ew on him when he won paying $75 last time in but his last two runs have been better than they look. Both times he's made sharp sprints to be in a good position on the corner before just holding his position up the straight. He came off two similar runs to win the race in which I backed him and I'll be sticking him in multiples today. You can't miss him; he's big, almost white and will settle at the back of the field. Belmont 2-1 Bold Scene has improved at every run this time in. He really whupped them last time in this class and over this trip and only rises 2.5kg, which doesn't seem enough to stop him. Belmont 3-5 Amici steps up 600m to try 2000m for the first time. He's by Serheed so you'd think he'd handle the trip but on a rare heavy track for Perth I'd want e/w odds to have a go, which we won't get so it's a watch race for me. Belmont 5-1 Reflective Star rises 2kg for flogging home from near last on the corner last time out in this grade to win narrowly. Doesn't win out of turn but should be a chance to make it two in a row. Gold Coast 7-6 Perri Lou won easily on the soft track two weeks ago. Drops in weight but rises from a Class 1 to Class 3 so I'll avoid the $2.60 on the morning line. Rosehill 2-2 Star Of Crown has had a short break since winning as a POOMA last time out. She finished nicely that day and clearly enjoys racing at Rosehill where she's won 3 from 4 with a 2nd placing. I'm happy to back her at $3.50+.

Black Book: Caulfield 8-6 Crown Ruby made it 5/6 with another good win at Bendigo. She looks up to this race and has drawn nicely so should demonstrate how good she is in this. Doomben 3-10 Dillinger was an eye catching 2nd first up here from a wide gate. Everyone took note of the run so I'd be surprised if he was any sort of odds but I expect him to go close though would prefer him to be running over a bit further.

SELECTIONS - 1 August 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 8-3 Kentucky Wildcat [6,18]
Queabeyan 4-4 Placebo [5]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 8-7
Queanbeyan 3-10

Comments: Stuff a duck. I got the first 2 legs of yesterday's Sale quaddie, missed the $11 3rd leg winner (ran 2nd and 3rd) and had the last leg winner (a non-POOMA selection) stood out. It paid $58K. I'm still in pain. Geelong 8-3 Kentucky Wildcat has had a 5 week break since winning over this course and in this class. Rises 2kg and has Brad Rawiller on board again so must be a great chance. Queanbeyan 4-4 Placebo gets her chance to win another race in this three horse field though on form you'd think that Forest Morning would win. It's a watch only race for me.
