2007 FULL POOMA RESULTS

Well, we've been on a twelve month journey of discovery and a narrow winner from our only selection on the last day of the year saw us finish a tad behind square at -4.0% profit on turnover (POT) for all selections and -4.9% for the unique selections. Not a bad effort given we were at -18.2% about half way through the year; we made a profit since that point but couldn't get our nose above water for the full twelve months. You can see in the table below that we got killed in the March-June period. The overall result puts us ahead of quite a few of the professional services according to people who've emailed me those details.

To summarise what the 2007 POOMAs were all about:

1. I chose 20 of my completely mechanical systems to run for the year;
2. I did two system reviews, deleting some and including others at each review; and
3. Results were broken down as TOTAL (allowing for selections that came from multiple systems) and UNIQUE (single selection regardless of how many systems selected it).

The worst thing I did was to cull System 13 at the first review, as it went on a terrific burst from that point forward and got itself back into the black (which I had even predicted when I culled it). As a POOMA it finished at -9.5% whereas for the year it achieved +7.3%. At least I got something out of it after reintroducing it for the final review. The best thing I did was introduce Systems 22 and 25, which were strong contributors.

I'll have another post describing the 2008 POOMAs, which will be based on those successful through 2007 plus a couple of others I've been tracking along.

The following is the summary of the 2007 POOMAs broken down by various categories:

Month:

State:

Type:

System Number:

SELECTIONS - 31 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Nowra 5-2 Another Fluro [21]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nowra 1-1
Townsville 8-2

Comments: Last day of the year and let's hope we finish the year in style and get a winner, which would make up for the frustrating 3 placings from 3 yesterday. Nowra 5-2 Another Fluro is only an average racehorse and is in an even field in this. Kevin Sweeney is the best jockey in the race so hopefully he can get him home.

Black Book: Townsville 5-6 Monashee Warrior was good in his first two starts before an average run. Returns from a spell and we'll assess his BB status on this run.

Sunday, December 30, 2007

SELECTIONS - 30 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Cranbourne 6-6 Mr Jenkins [13]
Hobart 2-7 Yedil [23]
Scone 2-9 Ready To Impress [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 1-8, 8-5
Mt Barker 1-1
Scone 5-11, 6-9, 7-11
Sunshine Coast 3-15, 8-9

Comments: Another good day yesterday putting us comfortably in front for the month but we're still going to finish a bit behind for the year. As predicted, Danzamonkey only just scrambled home over 1300m at Rockhampton. The slow track might have dulled his sprint but I wouldn't want to back him over 1300m or further against better company even though he's a talented horse. 1200m is a different matter. Mighty Ronnie ran better than I thought he could when winning at $5.70 beating the good horse, Lambton Castle. On that run we'll be getting more out of him. Cranbourne 6-6 Mr Jenkins looks ideally placed today and if he can get a decent run from his wide gate then he should go really close in this. Hobart 2-7 Yedil is one of those horses that is still a maiden after 12 starts and is a bookie's favourite having been beaten as favourite five times. If she can run up to her best then she can get home in this given the rest look legless but I'd want to get at least 6/4 to have a go. Scone 2-9 Ready To Impress is also a maiden after ten starts but plummets in grade for this and unless one of the first starters is any good she should be winning and even money would be a fair price.

SELECTIONS - 29 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 8-9 Noble Steed [26]
Rockhampton 2-1 Danwana [3,10]
Rockhampton 3-3 Lasting Peace [10]
Rockhampton 5-2 Danzamonkey [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 1-5, 3-2, 6-1, 6-4
Doomben 3-6, 6-7, 8-9, 8-13
Gawler 2-5, 4-1
Gold Coast 1-7
Kembla Grange 5-1, 5-2
Moonee Valley 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 5-1, 6-2, 7-1
Rosehill 3-7, 4-7, 7-6, 8-10
Stony Creek 5-4, 6-3

(* Any updates at Ascot later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Gee, that thing yesterday, Azzeland, blasted them in short order. I thought he might have been vulnerable but he was far from it. Rockhampton 2-1 Danwana's connections obviously got sick of chasing Danzamonkey around so decided to try dropping in grade and rising in weight in order to rack up a win. The best weighted horse in the race looks to be Carnaby Springs so if we can get around $4 then that would be a good bet. Rockhampton 3-3 Lasting Peace ran a couple of good races here before a poor 10th. If he runs up to those other efforts then he'll go close in this. Rockhampton 5-2 Danzamonkey has looked vulnerable past 1200m previously but looks a much stronger horse as a 4YO and he really should win again.

Black Book: Ascot 6-15 Mighty Ronnie really should be in the 1800m race, I reckon, rather than take on some of the other smart ones here. He should get a good run and will get home strongly but I'd want to see $16 to have a go in this. Doomben 4-6 Slim Pickings is really well placed in this and I expect him to go close at really good odds. Moonee Valley 5-4 Chinner Street was quite unlucky last time and if she gets a clean run is going to give this a fair shake.

SELECTIONS - 28 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Toowoomba 2-10 Culminate [7]
Toowoomba 5-3 Azzaland [13]
Toowoomba 8-4 Englobo [21]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 2-7, 6-6, 6-11
Toowoomba 5-3, 7-5
Wagga 5-2

Comments: Toowoomba 2-10 Culminate drops a fair bit in grade here but horses that keep running placings tend to be money thieves so even though he looks the likely winner I wouldn't want to take a short quote. Toowoomba 5-3 Azzaland broke the track record for 900m at his first start (and went into our black book) before winning again over that trip last start. He is a future Group winner, in my opinion, but I'm very wary of his chances today. He was getting a bit tired at the end of the race last time and steps up 200m today against a much more accomplished field than he's met before. At the odds-on quote I'll just watch him go around. Toowoomba 8-4 Englobo has a shocking winning record of 1/22 but if he's ever going to win a 2nd race then this could be it. Looks suited at the trip and has drawn well but you'd still want to get e/w odds given his lack of endeavour.

Thursday, December 27, 2007

SELECTIONS - 27 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geraldton 3-1 Bundy Blue [23]
Murray Bridge 4-1 Bel Amore [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geraldton 7-6
Gosford 6-3

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Murray Bridge 4-1 Bel Amore hasn't got much of a winning record but neither do the rest of them. He won over this course and class two starts back and is a half kilo better against the limit weight than that day so he should go close. Geraldton 3-1 Bundy Blue keeps finishing around the mark and has beaten a few of these comprehensively before. Has drawn well and really should just about rack up his first win today.

Black Book: Geraldton 7-6 Our Katarina is on her last chance as a BBer. She's in a race she can win, has had a freshen up and is unbeaten at the track. If she can't get home today then she won't be with us in 2008.

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

SELECTIONS - 26 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Newcastle 1-5 Dame Matico [10]
Sunshine Coast 9-1 Nicaragua [10,23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Caulfield 1-2, 6-7, 8-1
Cheltenham 4-4
Geelong 6-1, 7-1, 8-2
Newcastle 1-1, 5-1, 5-3
Randwick 1-2, 7-2

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: Newcastle 1-5 Dame Matico ran a good 2nd last time out when first up after the EI shut down. If e/w odds are available, which might be the case with the top one and a Waterhouse horse in the field, then that looks a good bet to me. Sunshine Coast 9-1 Nicaragua ran OK in better company last run for 3rd as favourite. Hasn't run a place in three 2nd up runs but they weren't shocking efforts so, while I'd be wary about anything less than e/w odds, he has to have a fair chance.

Monday, December 24, 2007

SELECTIONS - 24 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ballarat 6-10 The Catarena [5]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 6-7

Comments: Ballarat 6-10 The Catarena only has two rivals to contend with, both of which have much better soft track credentials. Perhaps the 3kg claim will even things up. Let's hope we can go to Christmas with a win under our belts.

Sunday, December 23, 2007

SELECTIONS - 23 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Narrogin 4-3 Western Novel [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Devonport 1-1, 2-8, 4-1
Horsham 6-4, 7-2
Seymour 3-4, 3-7, 4-3, 6-8, 8-1
Taree 1-1, 2-10, 7-3

(* Any updates at Narrogin later on *)

Comments: A great day yesterday with 5/6 POOMAs getting home mostly at nice odds. Off season wet tracks most places today so it's probably a good day to sit out. Narrogin 4-3 Western Novel is one of those selections I dread seeing - a horse with umpteen starts for only a few placings trying to win its Maiden. He's in a new stable so good luck to them. If there's any money for one of the first starters then it would have to be worth following, as the ones that have raced aren't much chop.

Saturday, December 22, 2007

SELECTIONS - 22 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 3-1 Stramos [26]
Colac 1-5 Port Regis [22]
Colac 6-7 Joncetto [5]
Kembla Grange 2-5 Daughterofdarkness [25]
Randwick 4-1 Takeover Target [23]
Toowoomba 3-14 Stunning [23]
Toowoomba 4-3 Junas [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 4-1, 8-1, 8-11, 8-12
Bathurst 4-3, 4-8
Colac 3-5, 6-3, 7-10
Eagle Farm 2-1, 4-3, 5-6, 6-16
Kembla Grange 6-4
Morphettville 3-1, 4-9, 5-6, 7-3
Sandown 5-7, 7-7

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Colac 1-5 Port Regis comes from one of our better systems but when you're backing a horse that's having its 20th start and is still a maiden you want to get a price, which won't happen here. That said, he won't meet a worse field in his life. His opposition has had a collective 75 starts for just 3 placings. I can't remember a worse field, come to think of it. Colac 6-7 Joncetto could win and might run last. He hasn't run a drum in two runs on slow going so it's problematic as to whether he'll get through it here. Kembla Grange 2-5 Daughterofdarkness is by Dracula and out of Night Lark. Surely they could have come up with a better name? That's one of the great bad names of the last 20 years. If she repeats her last start effort then she'l go close in this, though. Randwick 4-1 Takeover Target is a great sprinter but doesn't have a great 2nd up record with just 1 win from 5 goes albeit mostly in tough races. I'll just enjoy watching that race, I think. Toowoomba 3-13 Stunning led them up and got run down by a potential topliner in Azzaland, which was having its first start. Unless one of the first starters is any good you'd think it's a race between her and Jester Rumble. Toowoomba 4-3 Junas has earned his owners a cheque every time he's gone to the races, notching up his Maiden win before going for a spell. Has drawn off the track but has a lot of early pace so should be in or outside the lead after 200m or so. Is a genuine e/w chance.

Black Book: Morphettville 3-2 Artina didn't beat much but was never extended when winning softly up the straight at Victoria Park last time out. I think she might be pretty good, which is why she's in the black book.

Friday, December 21, 2007

SELECTIONS - 21 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gold Coast 3-10 Lovemieko [23]
Gold Coast 8-1 War Eagle [23]
Lismore 1-1 Shinko's Echo [21]

Lismore 6-3 Ratings Winner [21]
Yarra Glen 2-7 Junee Pops [25]
Yarra Glen 7-2 Key Result [13]
Yarra Glen 8-3 Sheer Vintage [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gold Coast 5-10
Lismore 5-1, 9-12
Moonee Valley 2-3, 2-9, 5-1, 7-3, 7-11
Yarra Glen 6-9, 7-1, 7-2, 8-9

(* Any updates for MV later on - updated inc Yarra Valley *)

Comments: Gold Coast 3-10 Lovemieko loomed up to win last time before weakening badly late for 4th. The wide draw, apprentice jockey and question over her fortitude mean I'd want to see $6+ to get interested. Gold Coast 8-1 War Eagle missed the start at his first Australian run since coming from the land of sheep rooters, made up ground and ran a quick last 600m to round up the rest of them and win nicely. Assuming he gets away with them he'll be hard to beat. Lismore 1-1 Shinko's Echo is working up to a win and gets her chance in this weaker event. Given even luck in running we'll go close with this one. Lismore 6-3 Ratings Winner has a 3/31 record so doesn't win out of turn and is coming off a last start win so the stats are against him. In his favour is that last start winners seem to do well when stepping up in grade in these ratings based races. Yarra Glen 2-7 Junee Pops Yarra Glen steps up to a staying trip here, which looks really suitable. This doesn't look a hard race so if she takes natural improvement from his first two runs then she'll be hard to beat in this. 7-2 Key Result is another last start winner who is well graded in this RB68 event. Did the job nicely over this course last time and must be a great chance of repeating the dose.

Thursday, December 20, 2007

SELECTIONS - 20 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bunbury 3-3 Egatrice [16, 23]
Kyneton 4-1 Brave Testimony [22]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bunbury 4-7, 7-3
Goulburn 7-10

(* Early post, updates later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Bunbury 3-3 Egatrice made it two in a row at Bunbury last time out in an RB67 event. Jumps to an RB75 event and goes up in weight so she'll need to improve to win this.

Black Book: Bunbury 9-7 Mighty Ronnie really should go close to winning this at his third run from a spell though I'd prefer him at a mile.

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

SELECTIONS - 19 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 5-7 Kim Luck [23]
Sandown 2-6 Dartbolt [13, 16]
Sandown 6-9 Banana Man [20]
Townsville 2-4 Prince Of Steel [3]
Wyong 4-2 Hellbound Lujain [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 4-1
Morphettville 5-1, 5-2, 5-5, 5-6
Sandown 1-1, 5-5, 6-2, 6-7, 7-9
Wyong 1-12

(* Any updates at Ascot later on - UPDATED+SANDOWN *)

Comments: Townsville 2-4 Prince Of Steel should simply win if weights mean anything. Wyong 4-2 Hellbound Lujain is as poorly weighted as Prince Of Steel is well weighted so I think he's going to have to run a career best effort in this to get home. Sandown 2-6 Dartbolt only needs two things in order to get home here. Run up to her last start effort and for the Tim Martin first starter, Adelente, to be no good. Ascot 5-7 Kim Luck has started favourite at each of his 8 career runs, racking up three wins along the way so the bookies love him. He's short again on the morning line and even though he has a good chance it's an even field so I'll just watch him go around.

Black Book: Ascot 7-10 Second Omen is really suited at the mile trip here and I'm keen to get the morning line price of $6. Ascot 8-12 Westerly Breeze ran a pretty good race when outgraded in the Kingston Town. She meets horses that beat her home in that race but in her favour is that she's won at a mile and a half. I like her at around $12.

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

SELECTIONS - 18 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Rockhampton 1-2 Aspiran [23]
Rockhampton 4-2 Kunninkik [10]
Rockhampton 6-4 Danzamonkey [2,10,23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cessnock 2-8
Rockhampton 3-12, 8-3
Wangaratta 4-17, 7-4, 8-1

Comments: Rockhampton 1-2 Aspiran was only a half second outside of the track record at her first start so unless one of the first starters is any good then you'd expect her to win again. Rockhampton 4-2 Kunninkik has drawn the car park but if he gets any sort of run then he's going to have to be hard to beat. Rockhampton 6-4 Danzamonkey won nicely last time and was just outside the record. He steps into Open company for the first time and is up against some sharp performers here so while I think he'll go close I wouldn't get sucked into a short price.

Monday, December 17, 2007

SELECTIONS - 17 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sale 5-8 Doone's Boy [21]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Sale 4-10, 6-3

Comments: Sale 5-8 Doone's Boy looks ideally placed in this race. There are a few chances so if he's e/w odds then that seems like a bet to nothing. Danger looks to be Frothy. The selections, including non-POOMAs, went on a bit of a run over the last three days returning $70 for $49 outlay, which is not bad given the number of roughies etc in them. POOMAs are behind for the month and we're running out of days to get in front for the month, let alone the year.

Sunday, December 16, 2007

SELECTIONS - 16 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canberra 2-4 Dermere [10]
Launceston 8-1 Shanghai Pete [13]
Launceston 9-2 I'm Paddy [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 8-5
Bordertown 4-1, 5-1
Canberra 3-5, 3-7, 8-2
Launceston 4-1, 7-10, 9-7, 9-8
Tatura 6-1, 6-3, 10-5

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: Canberra 2-4 Dermere has been consistent without winning. If he can get the right run here then he could get home but the first starters wouldn't need to be much good to get home, either, so I won't be going anywhere near the $2.90 on the morning line. Launceston 8-1 Shanghai Pete seems to have everything against him today - up in class, up in weight, up in distance coming off a month break and drawn off the track. He's $6.50 this morning and that seems about right. Launceston 9-2 I'm Paddy made it three 2nds in a row and given the form Gold Walk is in he might struggle to avoid making it four in this.

Black Book: Bunbury 9-7 Mighty Ronnie looked a little disappointing last time but they crawled along early and even though his final section was good he was too far back to get into the finish. There looks to be a better pace in this race so I expect him to go close. Canberra 5-10 Waterfront Lass has drawn the car park at what is a tricky start so that probably cruells her chances. She's won her races at country tracks, as well, though she does look well in here classwise. It's been wet in Canberra and she can't handle anything worse than dead so all in all things looks stacked against her here.

Saturday, December 15, 2007

SELECTIONS - 15 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ballina 4-8 Shaolhaven Rock [13]
Gold Coast 3-6 Perrini [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 4-1, 9-2
Ballina 6-1
Cheltenham 1-1, 3-5
Eagle Farm 8-13
Flemington 1-6, 2-6, 7-11
Gold Coast 4-14, 8-3
Rosehill 1-10, 1-13, 2-2, 2-3, 8-1
Stony Creek 6-9

Comments: Ballina 4-8 Shoalhaven Rock made it two in a row in an RB60 race at Grafton last time. Those races are not much stronger than Maidens so faces a little jump in grade. Offsetting that is he drops 2kg in weight so should go close. Gold Coast 3-6 Perrini can't be very sound given she's having her 4th first up run at her 7th start and bookies must love her, as she's been beaten three times as a short priced favourite. If she's on song today then I expect her to win.

Black Book: Ascot 2-8 Elliotto whupped them at his first start and was then a beaten odds on favourite last time. Has had a freshen up and if he runs up to his first start then should be hard to beat. Eagle Farm 3-6 Rockem is a really good horse on the up. Ran fast time last time and I expect him to show why he's a black booker by winning this. Eagle Farm 8-15 Decerto is a talented horse that has to overcome a couple of smart ones in Ghetto Blaster and Quizzical Lady. That will give us a chance to assess how far he can go and whether we can make money out of him as a black booker.

Friday, December 14, 2007

SELECTIONS - 14 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moonee Valley 2-1, 3-1, 6-6, 7-6
Toowoomba 3-2

Comments: Happy not to have selections today after a shellacking through the week.

Black Book: Moonee Valley 2-5 Chinner Street sat last in a field of 6 and unleashed a terrific finish to win her first start. That was a year ago so perhaps something has gone wrong for her to be off the scene so long and the 1000m is probably too short so I'll assess her BB status on this run. Toowoomba 3-2 Azzaland really killed them over this course at his first start and looked like a good horse in the making. Maiden winners stepping into Class 1 company are always a risky betting proposition but he did break the track record so you'd think he'll get home again here. On that note, nearly every horse I've seen break a track record at its first start has gone on to be a Group winner.

Thursday, December 13, 2007

SELECTIONS - 13 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Wagga 2-7 Orpen Deni [10]
Wagga 4-4 Birdman Rally [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geraldton 3-8, 4-2, 8-1, 8-6
Wagga 5-9, 6-5

Comments: Gawd. I thought we'd get home yesterday but racked up a few placings instead, which was frustrating. If the POOMAs today run up to their last start efforts then they'll go close.

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

SELECTIONS - 12 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 6-5 Boracic [26]
Ascot 7-7 Industrial Fury [19]
Ascot 8-2 Nowa Nowa [26]
Mackay 8-4 Tea Moss [15]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 5-2, 8-4, 9-7
Caulfield 2-6, 5-1, 5-8, 6-1
Mackay 4-4, 8-4

Comments: Another day with a few POOMAs. We got home in front yesterday and we're a fair chance of doing the same today, I think, even though System 26 is yet to kick a goal from 6 selections.

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

SELECTIONS - 11 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kilmore 1-6 Tricount [25]
Mt Barker 1-2 Sir Clase [21]
Mt Barker 7-2 Weekly Express [23]
Mt Barker 9-8 Quiz Time [7]
Muswellbrook 7-4 Somerville [25]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kilmore 8-2
Muswellbrook 1-6, 6-12

(* Any updates at Mt Barker later on *)

Comments: A few more POOMAs than usual for a Tuesday. Let's hope they do better than the couple yesterday.

Monday, December 10, 2007

SELECTIONS - 10 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Queanbeyan 4-4 Royal Taga [23]
Queanbeyan 7-4 Gold Moss [2,11]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Terang 6-1, 8-2

Comments: Queanbeyan 4-4 Royal Taga really should take this out unless one of the first starters is any good. Trifecta looks to be 4-3-5 straight out. Queanbeyan 7-4 Gold Moss has been flying lately and there's no reason to think that will end today though I think she's probably weighted up to her best run.

Sunday, December 09, 2007

SELECTIONS - 9 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bunbury 5-11 Egatrice [10]
Cranbourne 2-2 California Eagle [6]
Port Lincoln 1-2 Pointer [3]
Port Lincoln 3-1 Lord Lanno [13]
Port Lincoln 5-2 Llaroo Boy [23]
Sunshine Coast 6-1 Alpha Gun [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bunbury 6-12, 7-2
Cranbourne 5-2, 5-4
Hobart 6-4
Port Lincoln 5-4, 6-1, 7-3, 7-6, 7-12
Sunshine Coast 1-6
Traralgon 7-1

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: We copped a flogging yesterday so let's hope today's POOMAs can do much better. El Presidente was poorly handled by Troy Turner and really should have won the Kingston Town yesterday.

Black Book: Bunbury 7-4 Mighty Ronnie looks well placed in this grade. It's a pity he's drawn so wide, as he'd be a special otherwise. Maybe it'll just make the odds better.

SELECTIONS - 8 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 9-12 Kim Luck [23]
Cheltenham 5-1 Savlate [6]
Port Macquarie 5-9 Make An Impact [23]
Townsville 1-2 Don't Come Late [10]
Townsville 6-6 Silver Fun [15]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 3-8
Caulfield 3-5, 4-4, 6-2, 6-11, 7-1, 8-1
Doomben 5-8, 8-4
Kembla 1-4, 3-2
Port Macquarie 1-4
Rosehill 5-7, 8-4
Stawell 3-1, 6-6
Toowoomba 2-11, 5-13

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: A few POOMAs today and I reckon we'll make a profit...Ascot 9-12 Kim Luck flopped out of the gates and was forced to come from back in the race last time out. He normally leads and the quinella with our black booker, Chachi, looks a good bet. Cheltenham 5-1 Savlate is in a race to suit and he can rack up an overdue win after a couple of strong efforts in Listed grade. Looks like one to take blanc in the quaddie. Port Macquarie 5-9 Make An Impact must be driving her connections nuts given her string of placings. She must have a great chance to finally break her duck and if e/w odds come up then that seems a bet to nothing. Townsville 1-2 Don't Come Late is really well placed here after 3 runs from a spell. Ran well in Class 5 company last time and this distance will suit better. Townsville 6-6 Silver Fun has run 2nd at his last three starts and also looks well placed to finally break his drought but it's hard to get hugely enthusiastic about a horse that hasn't won for two and a half years.

Black Book: Ascot 6-11 Second Omen was pretty good last time after drawing off the track, being a long way from them on the turn and getting home nicely. She has drawn wide again but at this start it's actually an advantage so I expect a good run. Ascot 7-5 El Presidente should be going for 11 in a row, as he was desperately unlucky when 2nd a few runs back. Looks the goods here again. Ascot 7-11 Westerly Breeze looks outgraded here but if she gets a soft run could lob a place. Ascot 9-7 Chachi drew 15 of 15 first up and wasn't beaten far. Flogged them 2nd up last time in and I reckon e/w odds is a gimmee. Caulfield 7-13 Secret Flyer was unlucky last time out when settling back in a race with a slow pace. He got to the line OK and Wayne Hokai has come to town to ride him so that might be a good sign. Doomben 2-1 Sleepy Jackson comes to town for the first time after 5 starts at the Sunshine Coast. He'll flog along in front and I expect him to get home.

SELECTIONS - 7 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Coffs Harbour 5-2 Pimpala Diamond [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 6-9, 6-14
Darwin 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2
Mudgee 2-7, 3-8
Pakenham 8-18

Comments: Coffs Harbour 5-2 Pimpala Diamond started favourite first up last time up over this course and ran 2nd. These RB60 races are pretty weak so he must be a fair chance.

SELECTIONS - 6 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sapphire Coast 7-5 Point One [2]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 7-7
Northam 7-5, 8-2
Sapphire Coast 6-8

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Sapphire Coast 7-5 Point One won at Gundagai last time out after strong performances at Canberra. This is a fair jump in grade so I wouldn't get too excited by the $2.10 on offer on the morning line, especially with horses like Blow Up The Pokies and Cha Cha With Me in the race.

Wednesday, December 05, 2007

SELECTIONS - 5 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Albany 1-9 Second Key [23]
Rockhampton 5-4 Star Chariot [3]
Rockhampton 7-9 Massiah [15]
Rockhampton 8-2 Danzamonkey [15]
Sandown 1-1 Casual Kiss [22]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gawler 8-9
Rockhampton 1-10, 7-9, 9-3

(* Any updates at Albany later on *)

Comments: A few POOMAs today and they all look to have a chance. We'll need at least two to get home in order to make a profit.

Tuesday, December 04, 2007

SELECTIONS - 4 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moe 4-4, 6-6

Comments: If you have bet at Moe today then you're either our mate Roger or desperate.

Monday, December 03, 2007

SELECTIONS - 3 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Taree 5-9, 7-2

Comments: 2/4 yesterday returning $10+, which was welcome but we still need another $43 profit this month in order to finish in front for the year and that's probably beyond us.

Sunday, December 02, 2007

SELECTIONS - 2 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canberra 7-1 Rocky Cobra [13]
Geraldton 1-7 Classic Drop [25]
Murray Bridge 4-9 Our Olivia [7]
Murray Bridge 6-3 Valoroso [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Benalla 5-7, 6-5
Canberra 6-10
Geelong 7-4
Geraldton 3-3, 8-4
Grafton 5-3
Launceston 6-1
Murray Bridge 8-2
Sunshine Coast 1-9, 6-9

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Canberra 7-1 Rocky Cobra doesn't have much of a winning record and has drawn off the track so he'll need to run up to his best in order to win. Murray Bridge 4-9 Our Olivia drops in grade here to a race that really lacks depth. Probably won't be much of a price but does look the goods. Murray Bridge 6-3 Valoroso doesn't win out of turn but always puts himself in with a chance though having drawn off the track won't help. If e/w odds was available then he'd probably be a good bet.

Black Book: Geelong 5-5 Scenic Silver won well first up before settling near the pace and not going on with it at Flemington over the carnival. He's not a bad horse but I wouldn't go anywhere near the $2.20 on the morning line given this is not a bad field. Geraldton 3-3 Our Katarina has been pretty frustrating but is now in a race to suit so if she can't get home here then she'll be leaving the BB.

Saturday, December 01, 2007

SELECTIONS - 1 December 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Lismore 1-4 Shinko's Echo [21]
Lismore 6-12 Saffir Simpson [15]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 2-1
Cheltenham 1-1
Doomben 1-12, 2-1, 2-5, 5-9, 8-1
Gold Coast 4-7
Lismore 4-2
Moonee Valley 1-1, 2-8, 4-8, 5-11, 8-9
Randwick 6-2
Yarra Glen 8-1

(* Any updates at Ascot later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Lismore 1-4 Shinko's Echo was beaten as an odds on favourite last time over 900m. Was a good 2nd over 1000m prior to that and should be in the finish. Lismore 6-12 Saffir Simpson used to be trained by Gai Waterhouse and has now turned up for a new trainer on the north coast. If he moved north before EI went through Gai's stable then you'd think he'd go close.

Black Book: Doomben 6-12 Slim Pickings has been really good for us with a couple of wins at double figure odds. We've avoided him when he's been in unsuitable races and this looks like one today. We'll watch him go around today though if he's $20+ then I might have an e/w bet, as he'll finish hard. Randwick 3-4 Gavrilo reminds me of my old bloke, Into The Night, and I reckon he'll be winning a good race or two in his career. He's in against an OK one today in Lieserl (and Harry Kay might go OK, too) so we'll be able to get a guide on his talent. Toowoomba 6-1 Rockem is another horse that I reckon will win good races and he'll be winning this race tonight.

Randwick horses affected by EI: Thanks to Duff for posting the horses that were infected with EI at Randwick. It'll be interesting to see how they go, especially as every one of Gai's runners got it.

R1: 1,4
R2: 2,3,4
R3: 2,3
R4: 1,2,4,5,12
R5: 2,4,6
R6: 2,3,8
R7: 1,11,12
R8: 3

SELECTIONS - 30 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Wagga 1-7 Safari Princess [7]
Wagga 2-12 Retaliator [25]
Sandown 4-5 Cruyfforme [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cairns 4-8
Sandown 7-12

Comments: Wagga 1-7 Safari Princeess must be frustrating owners, as she's been beaten less than a length at each of her last four starts. She's even money on the morning line, which is too short for me. Wagga 2-12 Retaliator ran home well from back in the field after drawing off the track last time at Albury. With the better draw here and with only the two topweights in the race looking strong chances he might be a nice e/w chance. Sandown 4-5 Cruyfforme has been in good, consistent recent form but looks really well placed and if e/w odds are available then would be a fair bet.

Black Book: Sandown 6-4 Crown Ruby is now 3/3 having disposed of a good field last time at Ballarat. She steps up to 1400m from 1100m but on her breeding should have no trouble with the trip.

Thursday, November 29, 2007

SELECTIONS - 29 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Mackay 7-1 Cockaigne [13]
Northam 7-2 Dante's Banquet [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mackay 6-6
Northam 4-5

(* Any updates at Northam later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Mackay 7-1 Cockaigne won nicely first up since moving north from Brisbane. He has a good 2nd up record but that has been over longer trips so I'd be a little careful taking less than $3 about him today.

Black Book: Bendigo 6-7 Truesdale settled back in the field at his first start and rounded up an average field quite easily. He then went for a spell and returned in a much stronger event at Sandown, drew 11 and was never in the hunt when getting past a few tired ones late in the race. He's by Zabeel and has obviously taken time to mature. Freedman now trains him and I reckon connections will expect a big run.

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

SELECTIONS - 28 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bunbury 5-5 Midnight Train [13]
Devonport 2-5 Weasels Are Us [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cheltenham 2-7, 2-8, 4-4
Werribee 2-2

(Any updates at Bunbury later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Devonport 2-5 Weasels Are Us is a bookie's dream. He's having his 14th start, is still a Maiden, has started favourite 5 times and less than 4/1 another 4 times. If he runs up to his last start then he's a chance but with a bunch of mares in the race who knows whether his mind will be on racing or something else given he's a 4YO stallion.

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Charleville 2-2, 3-5, 4-11

Comments: Charleville is a track where form doesn't seem to stack up so I avoid betting there.

Sunday, November 25, 2007

SELECTIONS - 25 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Albany 4-4 Tidal Storm [13]
Hobart 4-5 Royal Work [23]
Hobart 8-8 Lekitama [23]
Swan Hill 2-8 Central Avenue [7]
Swan Hill 7-1 Duke Street [22]
Wodonga 6-2 Demandehere [22]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Albany 1-5, 7-6
Clare 2-5
Wodonga 9-3

(* Any updates at Albany later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Another bunch of POOMAs today including two from the most powerful performing system (22), which has racked up 8 wins on the trot after starting with a miss.

Black Book: Wodonga 8-8 Alexander Beetle won on his ear in a small field first up. Last preparation he would lead but not settle but on the basis of his first up run he looks to have come back a more mature horse and I expect he'll win today.

Saturday, November 24, 2007

SELECTIONS - 24 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 9-13 Kim Luck [23]
Morphettville 8-7 Would You Believe [23]
Rockhampton 1-2 Shootinthe Breeze [10,23]
Rockhampton 2-5 Our Gold Night [3,10]
Rockhampton 3-4 Chiffon And Lace [10,24]
Rockhampton 7-1 Can Go [23]
Rockhampton 9-3 Running Scared [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 1-1, 1-2, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, 3-10, 4-11
Morphettville 4-3
Rockhampton 2-9, 6-3, 6-4
Sandown 1-1, 2-5, 3-2, 5-1, 5-10
Taree 5-2, 6-2
Terang 7-2

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Lots of POOMAs today but I suspect most people's minds will be on the federal election. Given the number of multi-system selections it'll be a debacle if they all get beaten.

Black Book: Morphettville 7-12 Grand Duels is a lightly raced and talented sprinter that was a tad unlucky first up when a half length 4th. Is unbeaten 2nd up and will appreciate some pace in the race. Ascot 7-9 Our Katarina might be a little outgraded here but Willie Pike has taken the ride so she'll get every chance and will be nice odds. Ascot 7-11 Second Omen finished with a great burst first up and the step up in trip will obviously suit. She also looks a bit out of her depth and has drawn wide but is showing promise. Ascot 8-8 El Presidente looks a real up and comer and if he's successful in this - which I think he will be - then I expect we'll see him over in the east next year. Ascot 9-8 Chachi showed more strength last campaign than at his first preparation. Has drawn off the track but might have enough early pace to get a position and be a chance.

Friday, November 23, 2007

SELECTIONS - 23 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kilmore 4-6 Thidwick [25]
Naracoorte 1-8 Lady Avacan [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Grafton 4-1
Moonee Valley 1-3
Mt Isa 3-4, 5-1, 7-2

Comments: 2/4 yesterday returning $11+ for the POOMAs so that was welcome. Our black booker, Gavrilo, overcame difficult conditions to win his 2nd start. I think he'll go on to win black type races so we'll definitely keep following him. A few POOMAs today and, like yesterday, they all look to be competitive.

Thursday, November 22, 2007

SELECTIONS - 22 November 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bunbury 4-10 Feint [7]
Bunbury 6-4 Regal Minx [13]
Port Lincoln 6-3 Dead Serious [23]
Port Lincoln 7-3 Koolkanna Road [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bunbury 7-2, 8-3
Cranbourne 6-11, 8-8
Port Lincoln 6-9

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: No time to comment on the POOMAs but they all look to have a fair chance.

Black Book: Canberra 7-4 Gavrilio made an auspicious debut at this track a couple of weeks back when flogging a Maiden field. He reminded me of my old bloke, Into The Night, and I expect him to develop into a top level performer. It's worth remembering that at his 2nd start Into The Night went to Goulburn and was beaten as a 4/6 favourite so I wouldn't be taking a silly price today.
