SELECTIONS - 30 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Darwin 6-1 Sun For Sale [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canterbury 2-11, 6-1
Murray Bridge 7-8
Sandown 6-2

(* Any updates at Belmont later on - Belmont abandoned *)

Comments: Darwin 6-1 Sun For Sale has won both starts easily since moving to crododile country from Victoria. Rises 1.5kg to 60.5kg for his last start win over this course and in this grade so he should really score again, albeit at short odds.

SELECTIONS - 29 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Rockhampton 4-7 Symantia [10]
Rockhampton 9-3 Innocent Harry [10]
Wyong 9-3 Rebel Prince [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballina 3-1
Rockhampton 6-1
Wyong 8-6, 9-3

Comments: Updated now that my ISP is back online. No time for runner comments, though.

Monday, July 28, 2008

SELECTIONS - 28 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Mildura 4-1 Da Thong [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mildura 4-6, 6-1, 9-2
Port Macquarie 7-1
Townsville 5-1

Comments: Mildura 4-1 Da Thong beat a 5 horse field narrowly here at his second run from a spell. Drops from that Open grade race to an RB78, gets to carry another 5kg for his trouble and is up against a former Black Book horse, Samadji, which will be in front 200m out but isn't a noted 1200m galloper. Da Thong is around $4 on the morning line and I'm happy to take that.

Sunday, July 27, 2008

SELECTIONS - 27 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 5-2 Iht's Got Tricks [7]
Sunshine Coast 3-1 In Niugini [5]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 8-6
Benalla 1-8
Hobart 4-2, 4-4, 8-1
Kalgoorlie 1-5, 2-3, 6-6, 8-3, 8-9
Port Augusta 1-1

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Kalgoorlie 5-2 Iht's Got Tricks won his Maiden in strong style over this course at his 7th start. Hadn't run a place up to that point but hadn't been far away. Now that he's broken through he could go on with it in a field that isn't that strong. Sunshine Coast 3-1 In Niugini is the first selection for the year of my 3 horse field system. He hasn't won since - get this - 11 October 2003. That's 2003. He won't get a better chance to bring up win number four than today.

Saturday, July 26, 2008

SELECTIONS - 26 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 2-1, 3-1, 7-2
Donald 1-5
Moonee Valley 8-1
Townsville 3-4, 5-5, 7-1

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: The terrific Sea Zulu is aiming for a hat trick of Cleveland Bay wins up at Townsville at the meeting that was cancelled from Friday. Meets horses he beat last time out on much worse weight terms but his jockey really looked like he was foxing a bit in that race and he must be a great chance to make it 7 wins on the trot. Dangers look to be Citi Boy and Onalar, both of which will steam home late. Mixed Up Miss skipped racing at Canberra yesterday to run in Canterbury race 4 so that's probably a clue she's going OK. Frolics did the same thing in race 5.

Friday, July 25, 2008

SELECTIONS - 25 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 9-4 Owzat [6,7]
Geelong 10-1 My Harmonica [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canberra 6-5
Geelong 8-3
Ipswich 4-2, 5-1, 9-5

Comments: Geelong 9-4 Owzat flogged an RB62 field and drops 0.5kg in weight while rising to an RB68 over the same course. The all weather track at Geelong obviously suits him so there's no reason why he can't score again. Geelong 10-1 My Harmonica broke her duck over 1000m here 6 weeks ago. This race isn't really any harder though the 58kg is a bit of a worry so I'd want e/w odds to have a go.

Thursday, July 24, 2008

SELECTIONS - 24 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Wagga 3-6, 5-3, 6-11

Comments: Two heavy tracks and one abandoned meeting does not make for a day worth having a go.

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

SELECTIONS - 23 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 7-2 Goldtown [18]
Belmont 8-1 Lacida [18]
Bendigo 1-1 Ocean Journey [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

(* Any updates at Belmont later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Belmont 8-1 Lacida steamed home to win over 1400m two weeks ago. She drops back in trip but I don't think that'll matter here, as she's won twice at 1000m and there's enough speed in this race to allow her to get a drag into the race in the straight and run them down. She'll be good e/w odds and I'm happy at $6+. Bendigo 1-1 Ocean Journey finally got his act together to win by a goodly margin over this course last time out. Only rises 1kg and at around $5 he should give a good sight in this.

Black Book: Bendigo 3-7 Moondancing got to the lead half way up the straight first up at Warrnambool and accelerated in the style of a good horse to win by 6 lengths. She's either a really good horse or super wet tracker; maybe both. This race looks well within scope and I expect her to win if she's as good as I think she is.

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

SELECTIONS - 22 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 1-4

Comments: A similar day to yesterday with a couple of average meetings. I do think that if Geelong 8-5 Pinguescent goes around at $6+ that he's a good bet even though he doesn't have much of a winning record. Look for him to be finishing hard late.

Monday, July 21, 2008

SELECTIONS - 21 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: A nice return to form with a $4 and $9 winner from 3 selections yesterday, which puts us back in front for the month. Not much happening today and that's fine by me given the quality of the meetings.

Sunday, July 20, 2008

SELECTIONS - 20 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 4-5 Maquis [10]
Kalgoorlie 7-6 Lady Lozen [10]
Sunshine Coast 5-3 Von Zipper [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bendigo 4-3
Grafton 4-4
Hamilton 4-8, 6-5, 8-9
Hawkesbury 4-4, 6-4, 6-11
Hobart 2-13, 3-6, 8-11
Kalgoorlie 1-2, 2-8, 4-4, 6-4
Sunshine Coast 3-8, 3-9

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Kalgoorlie 4-5 Maquis came home well to win over 1316m here a fortnight back. That was an RB62 and he steps to an RB67 while coming back to 1100m. You would have thought she'd need further so the short odds on the morning line are not appealing but she must be a chance. Kalgoorlie 7-6 Lady Lozen has been leading up and getting run down late in recent runs. She's drawn wide and will need to speed across the field, which she'll be able to do easily, but the last 100m will be the worry. She'll be good e/w odds and will give a good sight. Sunshine Coast 5-3 Von Zipper finally broke his duck at his 10th start over this course last time. He'll race on the pace but will need to improve a level to beat the top one.

Black Book: Bendigo 5-5 Crown Ruby led throughout first up here two weeks ago. She thrashed them 2nd up last time over 1000m and you'd think she'll just win again.

Saturday, July 19, 2008

SELECTIONS - 19 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 5-2 Key's Ace [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 3-6, 4-5, 7-2
Caulfield 5-5, 6-10
Kembla Grange 8-10
Toowoomba 2-1, 2-13

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 5-2 Key's Ace led throughout to win on the non-global warming induced wet track last time. Drops back in trip, stays in the same grade and only rises 1kg so should be a good chance again even though he rarely strings two wins together. I'd be very wary of betting over in Perth today, as it's a rare heavy track. The city races literally only see one per year, though there have been a couple of meetings abandoned.

Black Book: Belmont 1-1 Swan Bee was never let go to win last time and might be a really smart type. If he runs up to that last run then he'll beat these - assuming there's no stars among the first starters and he can handle the heavy. Kembla Grange 4-3 Waterfront Lass was a good e/w result for us last time. I reckon we'll get another good price win out of her before too long and she'll go around at decent odds here so happy to be on board.

Friday, July 18, 2008

SELECTIONS - 18 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Muswellbrook 3-8, 8-6
Seymour 1-5, 2-1, 6-3

Comments: Gee, we've been a bit unlucky over the last 10 days or so. POOMA selections have been in front and been nabbed late or looked like finishing over the top of them before wilting late to finish close up. No selections today, which is fine by me.

Thursday, July 17, 2008

SELECTIONS - 17 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Rockhampton 6-3 Blast Master [6,7]
Rockhampton 9-9 Fine Seas [10]
Northam 8-3 Master Marlon [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Grafton 1-5, 4-4, 7-4
Northam 5-5, 6-2, 6-3
Rockhampton 3-1, 4-1

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Hope you backed the ruffie at Gawler yesterday that lobbed at $50. That horse looked to have a fair chance given it was always going to be the leader and would be fitter for the first up run. Northam 8-3 Master Marlon led all the way to win over this course in Maiden company last time out. Ran good time and he should be a fair chance again. Rockhampton 6-3 Blast Master had his first run in Far North Queensland since moving from Victoria and at his 17th race start brought up an easy win. It shows how big a class gap there is between the two states. Came from gate 15 in a field of 16 that day and if he repeats the effort will go close. Rockhampton 9-9 Fine Seas just needs to get a decent run from an awkward gate to be a big threat here. She looks very well placed, especially after the 3kg claim, and will be double figure odds so I'm happy to back her e/w.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

SELECTIONS - 16 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 3-1 Bannerkins [8]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Darwin 3-4, 6-10, 6-11
Doomben 7-3
Gawler 6-5
Grafton 3-7, 3-9
Sandown 7-10, 8-1, 8-10

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 3-1 Bannerkins drops back in grade from her good 3rd last time over this course. It's a slow track at Belmont today, which can be a bit problematic, as they don't get many over there so the form is sometimes a bit hard to work out but she looks like she can handle it but I wouldn't want to take less than $3.50.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

SELECTIONS - 15 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Townsville 4-5, 4-12
Wyong 1-2, 6-3

Comments: Doesn't look much of a day today so save your money for tomorrow.

Monday, July 14, 2008

SELECTIONS - 14 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Wagga 6-8 Elvis Aaron [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Echuca 5-5
Wagga 6-7, 7-1

Comments: Wagga 6-8 Elvis Aaron won his Maiden 3 starts back in a dead heat then stepped up to an RB67 race when finishing 16th of 16 over 1200m. Showed that wasn't his right form by winning an RB57 at Narrandera at the TAB meeting when back to 1000m. This is an RB72 so he's going to need everything to go right for him but he'll be nice odds and give us a sight for a fair way.

Sunday, July 13, 2008

SELECTIONS - 13 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Port Augusta 3-2 Rippleson [6]
Sunshine Coast 5-7 Grey Stream [20]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Casterton 3-8, 5-7, 8-7
Grafton 4-9, 9-6
Hobart 5-12
Kalgoorlie 7-4, 8-5
Port Augusta 5-1, 8-5
Sunshine Coast 3-5, 3-11, 5-7, 7-6

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Port Augusta 3-2 Rippleson has won his last 3 and 5 of his last 6 as he's come through the grades. Looks a genuine $1.50 to me. Sunshine Coast 5-7 Grey Stream is the debut runner for System 20 for the year. She came off a half dozen runs in black type company to score over 1200m here two weeks ago. Steps up to a mile and you'd think she'd have to just about win again although she'll be a short price.

Saturday, July 12, 2008

SELECTIONS - 12 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Newcastle 3-7 Migoto [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 1-1, 2-7, 5-1, 7-11, 8-11
Canterbury 1-2
Doomben 6-5
Gold Coast 5-2
Moonee Valley 8-1
Morphettville 4-2
Toowoomba 5-8

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Newcastle 3-7 Migoto won over this course in an RB71 last time out. Steps into an Open company race and he'll need to do everything right to bring up a hat trick. The morning line price of $4.50 is particularly unappealing. I'd suggest $7+ is his right price.

Black Book: Doomben 8-14 Dillinger has moved north after three runs in Sydney. Killed them on a heavy track in the style of a good horse at his second start and then found the black type company a bit hard when a well fancied 7/4 favourite. There's a lot of speed in this race and he'll get his chance to run over the top of them.

Friday, July 11, 2008

SELECTIONS - 11 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 10-2 Muzza's Star[18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 7-7, 9-7, 10-10

Comments: Geelong 10-2 Muzza's Star races well at his home track of Geelong and finished off well for a good win on the all weather track last time out in a Class 1 race. This is no harder and he looks to be a fair chance.

Thursday, July 10, 2008

SELECTIONS - 10 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Hawkesbury 4-4 Ready To Reign [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Grafton 1-12, 2-1, 7-2
Hawkesbury 4-4, 5-3
Mackay 2-2, 3-4, 6-3, 6-12, 7-4
Northam 6-1, 8-3

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: It must be a dead set slop down at Mornington to abandon a meeting. They normally run around on tracks so wet the horses need SCUBA gear. Hawkesbury 4-4 Ready To Reign won easily over this course last start. Rises from an RB60 to RB65 and is up 1kg but drops back to F&M grade so she'd only have to repeat that run to get home in this.

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

SELECTIONS - 9 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 6-1 Youlwin [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 7-6
Cheltenham 9-14
Gosford 3-4, 4-1, 5-8

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 6-1 Youlwin won an RB64 over 1600m with 57kg at Northam, then won an RB67 at Northam over 2200m also with 57kg, then ran 7th at Belmont over 2200m in an RB73 with 55.5kg and, finally, then won an RB79 at Belmont with 53.5kg over 2200m. He's by Jeune and that 7th was on a track rated as dead which is pretty much what you'd expect from the breed, as they're pretty legless in the wet. He's drawn well, has 57kg again, drops in grade and if it's not wet then I expect him to win even though 10-Sir Vice is very well in at the weights.

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

SELECTIONS - 8 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: Nothing to see here. Not a sausage. Bugger all.

Monday, July 07, 2008

SELECTIONS - 7 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Muswellbrook 7-9 Princess Obey [6,7]
Warrnambool 8-5 Our Scene [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Muswellbrook 4-1, 4-2, 5-14, 8-1

Comments: Muswellbrook 7-9 Princess Obey beat a F&M field over this course easily first up from a break two weeks ago. Steps up in grade from a RB72 to a RB77 non-sex restricted race but if she runs up to her last effort then must go close. I think she'll be e/w odds and if so then is worth a bet. Warrnambool 8-5 Our Scene is shooting for a hat trick after easy wins at Mt Gambier and then over this course in a Class 1. This is no harder and shows promise so I expect him to get home from Marana Majic.

Sunday, July 06, 2008

SELECTIONS - 6 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 5-1 New Addition [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 2-1, 3-12
Bowraville 3-1
Hobart 1-4, 2-3, 2-10, 8-1
Kalgoorlie 7-3, 8-4
Mudgee 3-9

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: A good result yesterday with 2/2 returning $10. I had one of the great pieces of poor luck/judgement in the Rosehill quaddie when I took 8 horses in the 9 horse 3rd leg and the other one won...! Luckily, I decided to back it straight out and got half of the $5K First4 on the way through but the $8K quaddie would have also been nice. Reminds me of the time about 6 years ago when I had 6 horses in a 9 horse field in the last leg of the quaddie at Warwick Farm with all my results paying $43K and, amazingly, I didn't run a place. That takes some doing... Kalgoorlie 5-1 New Addition is a consistent sort in this grade. She's drawn nicely and Chloe Chatfield rides her well so she should be a fair chance.

Saturday, July 05, 2008

SELECTIONS - 5 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Rosehill 6-2 Star Of Crown [18]
Toowooomba 2-2 Kneel And Raise [19]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 1-2, 3-5
Cheltenham 3-6, 7-4
Flemington 6-17
Gold Coast 4-2, 5-1
Kembla Grange 5-2, 7-13
Rosehill 1-1
Toowoomba 4-1, 4-7
Wangaratta 7-1

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Rosehill 6-2 Star Of Crown has been in consistent form this year. Has won 2/3 with another placing at this track she should go well even from the wide gate. Toowoomba 2-2 Kneel And Raise was never in doubt last time. He looks likely to be a $1.50 favourite and will probably beat home Rocklet again. In the Queensland Cup today I think there are only three chances, 3-Sky Biscuit, 5-Rezone and 6-Tedriffic, with a preference for Rezone.

Black Book: Former black booker In The Shadows runs around in the final of the Winter Championship and must be a fair chance at odds. He sat deep all of the way last time, got to the lead early and was a sitting duck for the swoopers. If he can get a decent run then he'll run a good race.

Friday, July 04, 2008

SELECTIONS - 4 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: A very ordinary day. I'll watch Crown Ruby run and leave it at that.

Black Book: Bndigo 6-10 Crown Ruby looked really good last preparation, winning three in a row before an even run at Sandown when stepping up in trip. If she's anywhere near right then you'd think she'll win this.

Thursday, July 03, 2008

SELECTIONS - 3 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Townsville 2-5 First Edition [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 5-9, 6-6
Newcastle 2-1, 7-3
Northam 8-3
Townsville 2-3, 6-5

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Townsville 2-5 First Edition is in a pretty hot race that sees a number of in form horses that have found success since moving to far north Queensland. First Edition took a few runs to find his feet in the area but has won 4 of his last 5. Sparkling Ruler has won 5/6 since moving north and Perugin Thought has won 4/4. If Highonrum runs up to his last start effort behind Sea Zulu then he might upset them all, as Sea Zulu would beat all of these and Highonrum was only 1.5L behind him last time. It's such an open race that it also wouldn't surprise if Tippu Tip ran over the top of them. If we can get $7 for First Edition then that's OK otherwise I'll watch with interest. Talking of Sea Zulu, his will be another race worth watching, as it's a good field.

Wednesday, July 02, 2008

SELECTIONS - 2 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 4-1 Phormium [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 4-3
Doomben 5-5, 8-2
Sandown 2-9

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 4-1 Phormium finally won another race 3 starts ago then ran another good race before winning again over a mile last time out. Has had 5 weeks off so should be fresh enough to be a threat here.

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

SELECTIONS - 1 July 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cessnock 5-9, 9-3
Moe 4-7

Comments: I've suspended System 13 in my half yearly review. I did the same thing last year to this system and it then went on a run of 20 wins from 40 selections with a healthy profit, which ended up being the difference at the end of the year. I've introduced System 20, which won't give us many selections but has a healthy strike rate and profit so far in its test period. Nothing of any note today, which is fine by me given the quality of the meetings.

Black Book: Cessnock 4-6 Waterfront Lass will sit off the pace and get her chance to run over the top of them in the straight though she's probably only an e/w bet, as the top two in the market look likely to run well.
