SELECTIONS - 31 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ipswich 1-1 Master High [7]
Ipswich 5-6 Lassie Mactavish [7]
Mt Barker 4-4 Denjiro [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 1-2
Ipswich 2-8, 2-9
Taree 8-1

(* Any updates at Mt Barker and Canterbury later on *)

Comments: The two black bookers yesterday were really disappointing so they're out. A few POOMAs today. We need $20 profit to finish ahead for the month so we've got no chance of that happening. As long as we finish in front then I'll be happy and we look to have a fair chance.

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

SELECTIONS - 30 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Cheltenham 4-1 Go Sandman [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cheltenham 7-2
Cranbourne 7-2
Hawkesbury 3-11

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: There's no doubt that Cheltenham 4-1 Go Sandman is the best of a pretty ordinary bunch. Whether he can lump the 59.5kg and give 2kg+ to the field remains to be seen and I'd want e/w odds to have a go.

Black Book: Hawkesbury 8-3 Cheekybynature won with something in hand at his first run before an even 5th over the same course before a spell. We'll see how good he is at this start. Cheltenham 7-2 Allsons ran around like Roger after a rare St Kilda win at his first start at Gawler but showed a heap of potential and went into the black book, which paid immediate dividends when he thrashed them next time out. He then tackled harder company than he meets here and I expect him to win at good odds.

SELECTIONS - 29 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geraldton 1-5 Grasa Express [10]
Mackay 2-1 Super Shadow [10]
Mildura 1-4 Itsanightmare [17]
Mildura 7-1 Bulletproof Rock [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mackay 7-4
Nowra 4-4, 5-2

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on *)

Comments: A few selections today and the two main chances will be short so we'll need a couple of these to get home to finish in front. Bulletproof Rock comes from one of my best systems, which was the old System 22 from last year that achieved a 10/14 result. The horse doesn't look much chop but the rest of them are legless so he must be a chance.

Monday, January 28, 2008

SELECTIONS - 28 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cheltenham 2-1, 6-5
Randwick 6-1, 6-11
Sandown 3-1, 8-2
Yarra Glen 6-1, 7-1

Comments: Internet problems today but there are no POOMAs so we'll just watch Rockem run and see how he goes.

Black Book: Doomben 8-3 Rockem is working through his grades nicely and overcame a hard run last time to win. He's drawn off the track here and meets a competent field so we'll get a guide on how good he is in this. Randwick 7-9 Miss Shalaquing blasted along in front last time and went to the line under a stranglehold at Newcastle. The morning line has her at double figure odds, which would be rather nice.

Sunday, January 27, 2008

SELECTIONS - 27 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ballarat 7-2 Alanthus [13]
Sunshine Coast 4-7 Krisalo [7]
Tamworth 2-2 Silencing [13]
Tamworth 4-1 Last Try [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballina 2-1, 2-11, 3-5
Hobart 6-2
Tamworth 6-7

(* Any updates at Bunbury - and other venues - later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: We snuck home yesterday with a small profit but are still a fair way behind for January. We need a $20 winner, which seems unlikely today.

Saturday, January 26, 2008

SELECTIONS - 26 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gold Coast 3-2 Lightning Brown [6,7]
Gold Coast 3-5 Forever Autumn [7]
Murray Bridge 8-2 Thornhill [2]
Randwick 7-8 Raqas [16]
Wagga 3-2 Think Unique [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 2-2, 3-1, 7-1, 8-5
Caulfield 2-1, 6-4, 7-10, 8-10
Eagle Farm 1-6, 5-13
Gold Coast 7-1
Hanging Rock 5-2, 9-1
Kembla Grange 4-6, 5-8, 7-18
Randwick 2-3, 3-1, 7-8
Toowoomba 5-7, 8-10
Wagga 5-1

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Yesterday's POOMAs were terrible. Never gave us a chance. Let's hope we have some Australia Day cheer with this lot. BTW - it's India's national day, as well.

Friday, January 25, 2008

SELECTIONS - 25 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Port Lincoln 8-3 Rajaska [7]
Rockhampton 6-5 Our Gold Night [3]
Rockhampton 6-6 Emmatay Lane [7]
Rockhampton 10-4 Danwana [6,7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Benalla 6-2, 8-2
Canberra 1-7, 4-2
Moonee Valley 1-2, 4-1, 7-12, 8-10
Muswellbrook 5-11
Port Lincoln 3-1, 6-7

(* Any updates at MV later on *)

Comments: We got home with our last selection at Townsville yesterday. Hopefully, today's lot can finish ahead, as well. Danwana goes well and is probably the best of them. Two selections in race 6 at Rocky. Whenever there's more than one selection in a race they tend to run 2nd and 3rd, like they did yesterday, which is frustrating.

Thursday, January 24, 2008

SELECTIONS - 24 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Townsville 1-2 Cupbearer [7]
Townsville 5-2 Positron [10]
Townsville 5-6 Highonrum [7]
Townsville 6-3 Piraues [6,7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bunbury 1-6
Townsville 1-6, 2-2, 3-9, 5-1, 5-4
Wyong 3-4, 6-1

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: A bunch of selections at Townsville today. All are last start winners and should be a chance again here though that 5th race there seems to be competitive with four separate horses selected by different systems.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

SELECTIONS - 23 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ipswich 8-2 Fangles [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 8-6
Gawler 2-6
Randwick 5-1
Sandown 1-3, 7-10

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Ipswich 8-2 Fangles won over this course in Class 2 company last time out. Rises 2kg in weight for this and should be a fair chance again though it's worth noting that he's only won on dead and heavy going so e/w odds are needed to have a go.

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

SELECTIONS - 22 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Stawell 7-7 Bonny Cat [6,7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gosford 2-12, 6-1
Stawell 5-1, 6-15

Comments: The POOMA that won yesterday actually goes OK and might be worth following though i won't make him a black booker. Stawell 7-7 Bonny Cat has found form at her last two starts, firstly in an easy Maiden win and then a F&M RB62 success over this course. A Class 2 race is a fair jump in grade but she's in form so should be a chance.

Monday, January 21, 2008

SELECTIONS - 21 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Moruya 6-4 Wing Forward [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Warrnambool 7-2

Comments: Moruya 6-4 Wing Forward won in OK fashion on debut when well in the market. Comes in better in this RB64 event than he would in a Class 1 so must be a chance again though there are a few up and comers engaged. The system that picked the one at Warrnambool was on the cusp of selection for the 2008 POOMAs. It's got a 34/106 record at 24% profit since going live, which is pretty much in line with expectation.

Sunday, January 20, 2008

SELECTIONS - 20 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Launceston 7-2 Forbidden Quest [13]
Pakenham 6-2 All Cheval [13]
Cowra 9-7 Nellie's Glen [7]
Port Macquarie 7-1 Ports Apart [10]
Mt Barker 3-1 Weekly Express [13]
Mt Barker 8-5 Centrum [16]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cowra 4-4, 5-1, 6-2, 7-1
Mt Barker 10-9
Pakenham 1-5, 3-1, 3-13, 8-1
Sunshine Coast 5-10

(* Any updates at Mt Barker later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: A few POOMAs today. Let's hope they give the month a kick along.

Saturday, January 19, 2008

SELECTIONS - 19 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 4-3 Elliotto [9]
Gold Coast 3-6 Pre Commitment [7]
Toowoomba 3-1 Carry On Kosa [8,10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 6-3
Bairnsdale 6-1
Flemington 3-2
Gold Coast 2-5, 8-2
Newcastle 4-1, 7-1
Rosehill 4-4
Toowoomba 4-8

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Toowoomba 3-1 Carry On Kosa won her first three starts and then has gone 10 runs without saluting. She ran well last time and this is the weakest race she's been in for a while so should go close though she's not very big and has 58kg to carry. Gold Coast 3-6 Pre Commitment hasn't got much of a winning record and got things to suit when leading all of the way over this course a month ago. Jumps two grades so I'd want $6+ even in the small field. Ascot 4-3 Elliotto was nabbed in the closing stages of the race by Broome Time last time out. Meets that horse 1.5kg better so should be a fair chance. He's also a black booker.

Friday, January 18, 2008

SELECTIONS - 18 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Wagga 4-7 Absolutely Me [7,11]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ipswich 2-17, 5-1, 9-7
Mornington 1-1, 1-2, 1-5, 4-1, 5-1
Wagga 3-8, 6-2, 8-1

Comments: Wagga 4-7 Absolutely Me was beaten in fast time first up over 1000m here before a clear win in RB64 company last time. Has drawn the inside gate and should go close though I think $3 is the lowest price I'd take.

Thursday, January 17, 2008

SELECTIONS - 17 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geelong 5-2 Bianbad [13]
Grafton 6-5 Nimie [2]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 7-1
Grafton 1-1, 2-8, 7-1, 7-14, 8-2

(* Any updates at Ascot and Canterbury later on *)

Comments: Well, I said that if you could make a profit yesterday then more power to you. I ended up taking a Bunbury quaddie (missed first leg) and Wyong quaddie, which paid $7K when the $75 shot I had on my ticket steamed home to win clearly. It's not every day (or week) that you get such a big price home. Geelong 5-2 Bianbad really hit the line hard to win his Maiden at this track last time. Maiden winners into Class 1 races is the biggest single-grade jump there is but he does look to have a lot of upside so happy to take $4. Grafton 6-5 Nimie took 11 runs to win its Maiden and then another 11 to make it two successes so you'd have to be a little careful but she is by Clang, a noted sire of wet trackers, and did win easily last time out at a non-TAB Glen Innes meeting. I'd want $8+ to get interested, though.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

SELECTIONS - 16 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bunbury 6-7, 9-1
Morphettville 6-1, 6-2, 6-9
Sandown 5-1
Wyong 8-9

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: No POOMAs today and if you can make a profit out of the horses running today then more power to you.

Black Book: Sandown 4-6 Chinner Street looked good at Bendigo and went into the BB. She was unlucky first up and then started well in the market but finished a plugging 8th of 10 at MV last time out. This is easier but the form comes from all over the shop so it's hard to back her with any confidence.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

SELECTIONS - 15 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

And no non-POOMAs either

Comments: Nothing to see here.

Monday, January 14, 2008

SELECTIONS - 14 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Nowra 4-2 Octostar [7]
Stony Creek 1-6 Chrystelle [17]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

There are no non-POOMA selections

Comments: Nowra 4-2 Octostar won easily over this course last time in a Maiden and an RB61 is not any stronger so he should go close again. Stony Creek 1-6 Chrystelle plummets in class from her first up 10th of 11 at Caulfield over 1600m in Saturday grade. She was only beaten a bit over 6L that day so that's probably strong enough for this.

Sunday, January 13, 2008

SELECTIONS - 13 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geraldton 5-1 Leica Steel [7]
Kynetpn 1-6 Mastersten [1]
Tamworth 2-5 Time Shift [13]
Tamworth 6-6 Wriggle [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 4-4
Geraldton 2-1, 3-2, 9-7, 10-4
Hobart 6-6, 9-9
Kyneton 7-2, 8-7
Sunshine Coast 2-8, 3-2, 3-13
Tamworth 4-4, 4-6, 5-6, 5-8, 7-1
Warrnambool 7-6

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on *)

Comments: POOMAs lost $1 yesterday but that was OK, as our two black bookers won paying $2.70 and $13. The second of those, Slim Pickings, knocked off a POOMA but I wasn't complaining as I took them to run 1-2 in a trifecta with the field for 3rd and when Avadale Hornet lobbed that spot at $50 it was a handy result. We ran a close 2nd with a $17 POOMA the other day and had a $20 shot also run 2nd yesterday so with a bit of luck we could be a fair way in front. Hopefully, one will get up soon. All 26 POOMA and non-POOMA selections yesterday returned $42.50 from the 10 winners so if you didn't finish in front then don't blame me...Four POOMAs today of which the best looks to be Mastersten.

Saturday, January 12, 2008

SELECTIONS - 12 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Doomben 8-2 Umaprince [13]
Doomben 10-17 Mashudu [10]
Gold Goast 7-3 Leondari On Ice [13]
Gold Coast 9-7 Sprintcar [7]
Kembla Grange 4-7 Movealong [17]
Kembla Grange 8-11 Four Beers Later [7]
Seymour 2-9 Romping [17]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 2-4, 6-1
Caulfield 3-5, 6-2, 7-2
Doomben 1-6, 2-8, 3-4, 5-13, 6-3, 10-19
Kembla Grange 5-2, 7-6
Morphettville 4-4
Rosehill 1-2, 2-2, 7-1, 7-4

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Doomben 8-2 Umaprince is up against our black booker today and I'll be just taking these two horses in the quaddie. Umaprince led all of the way to win easily last time out, goes well at the track and trip so should go close. The only worry is that his wet track form is not too solid. Doomben 10-17 Mashudu looks pretty well placed in this and is going to be around $8, which is a good price for us. Gets a good gate after a wide draw last time and will handle the wet track. Gold Coast 7-3 Leondari On Ice finally put it all together to win his Maiden at the Sunshine Coast last time. This is a big jump in grade so the $2.20 on the morning line is way to short - about four times in my view. Gold Coast 9-7 Sprintcar finally won another race and has won two in a row before and he should be in the finish in what is an even race. Kembla Grange 4-7 Movealong drew 12 of 12 in a Maiden at Rosehill first up, was 12th on settling, 12th on the corner and steamed home for 5th beaten on 2L as a 33/1 shot. This is much easier so should go close though she'll be about one-tenth of the odds that she was last time out. Kembla Grange 8-11 Four Beers Later won on the heavy track over this course three weeks ago. She doesn't look very well placed against some of these so I would want double figure odds. Seymour 2-9 Romping was $8 and ran just an even race at his only start last preparation. This is a weak looking field and if Danny O'Brien has him right then we should get a good sight at e/w odds.

Black Book: Doomben 3-4 Rockem runs better when ridden off the pace and if he can get that sort of run then will be in the finish, as he has a sharp sprint. Doomben 8-16 Slim Pickings is really well placed in this race at the weights and I expect him to finish hard at nice e/w odds.

Friday, January 11, 2008

SELECTIONS - 11 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Eagle Farm 5-4 Magical Joker [2]
Moonee Valley 3-2 Causeway Queen [1]
Port Macquarie 4-1 Hotshot Hayil [13]
Port Macquarie 9-4 Icebergs [7]
Warrnambool 5-12 Catch The Magic [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Eagle Farm 6-1, 6-7, 9-4
Moonee Valley 1-1, 1-2, 6-7, 7-2
Port Macquarie 4-1
Warrnambool 5-13, 7-2, 8-8

(* Any updates at MV later on *)

Comments: A few POOMAs today and they all look to have a fair chance. Things were a bit skewiff with data yesterday so we ended up with 4 selections for just one winner.

Black Book: Warrnambool 2-7 Marche Avant is on the assess list after a solid first run 6th of 14 beaten less than 3L when not being able to get a clear run in the straight. From the powerful Moody stable and if e/w odds are available then I'll have a crack.

Thursday, January 10, 2008

SELECTIONS - 10 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Cranbourne 2-5 Elvis Eyes [17]
Mt Barker 1-4 Mr Magnificent [10]
Townsville 3-2 Sound Harmony [10]
Townsville 4-13 Red Enzo [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gosford 6-11
Mt Barker 7-1
Townsville 3-5, 4-6, 5-3

(* Any updates at Mt Barker later on - UPDATED + Townsville *)

Comments: We managed to get a couple of winners yesterday including Reunification, which went around at an amazing $1.30. Seriously, that was fantastic value. Our other POOMA, a $5 winner, seemed to be the beneficiary of what looked to be a boat race. Cranbourne 2-5 Elvis Eyes has run home well in her couple of runs so the step up to a mile looks just what is needed.

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

SELECTIONS - 9 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Devonport 5-3 Reunification [6]
Port Lincoln 6-5 Dead Serious [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Port Lincoln 3-2, 5-8, 6-3
Sandown 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 7-10
Sunshine Coast 6-11

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: If Devonport 5-3 Reunification is beaten today then it'll be nearly as big a shock as when Ajax went down as a 1/40 shot in a three horse race all those years ago. I'd suggest that $1.10 is good value but I suspect she'll be $1.04.

Black Book: Devonport 2-2 Black Red was a ruffie in our non-POOMA selections at our last start when running home strongly into 5th place after seemingly being gone before the turn and looking likely to run last. Obviously has a lot to learn and today is a watch race with a little e/w bet if the odds are juicy enough.

Tuesday, January 08, 2008

SELECTIONS - 8 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Stawell 5-9 Prettyasapicture [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Muswellbrook 1-5, 5-13

Comments: Stawell 5-9 Prettyasapicture probably won't get a better chance to break her duck than in this race today. She's got home nicely at two runs from a spell and the step to 1600m looks ideal. I'd assess her as an even money chance.

Monday, January 07, 2008

SELECTIONS - 7 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moruya 3-9

Comments: Another really frustrating day yesterday with a couple of close results going against us. Only the black booker today.

Black Book: Moruya 6-5 Waterfront Lass was never in the race at Canberra before going to Tumut for an easy kill in a non-TAB event. Looks outgraded in this but is 2/2 at the track so I expect her to be an e/w chance.

Sunday, January 06, 2008

SELECTIONS - 6 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bunbury 6-3 Macabre [7]
Gilgandra 5-5 Major Enterprise [7]
Hobart 6-2 Forbidden Quest [13]
Hobart 9-8 Looking For Action [10]
Sunshine Coast 3-12 Diamond Cape [17]
Sunshine Coast 4-2 Upwards [6,7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bairnsdale 4-3, 5-2, 6-3, 8-2
Hobart 5-1, 5-2
Gilgandra 4-3
Sunshine Coast 1-7, 3-1, 3-8, 3-13, 5-9

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: We were really unlucky yesterday to not make a profit, I thought, but that's the way it goes. A couple of them looked home and got run down late so let's hope today's crop goes better.

Saturday, January 05, 2008

SELECTIONS - 5 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Stony Creek 6-2 Jeteven [10,13]
Newcastle 6-3 Reign And Rule [2]
Newcastle 7-5 Dame Matico [7]
Newcastle 7-11 Novellino [7]
Mudgee 3-4 Lavender Cove [7]
Mudgee 6-2 Fernfield [2]

Morphettville 3-1 Would You Believe [13]
Toowoomba 3-7 Inner Guard [17]
Toowoomba 9-3 Regal Castanea [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 5-2, 5-7, 6-7
Mudgee 3-2, 5-1, 6-1
Newcastle 1-1, 3-1
Randwick 5-1, 6-1
Sandown 7-9
Toowoomba 1-4, 3-6, 4-1, 7-3, 8-1

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Gee, it was a small flogging yesterday. Couldn't even get a $1.30 shot home. Hopefully, we'll do better today. Stony Creek 6-2 Jeteven flogged his rivals in Maiden company here in mid-December on a slow track. Will probably lead them for a long way and be a fair chance in this small field. Newcastle 6-3 Reign And Rule has run a couple of sound races and this doesn't look like much of a race so if he can get a good run from his 9 gate then he should go close. Newcastle 7-5 Dame Matico carried Robbo to victory over this course first up to win her Maiden in OK time for the grade. If she runs up to that effort then she'll go close though she'll have to contend with Newcastle 7-11 Novellino, a POOMA in the same race, that also won his Maiden over this course in a similar time three weeks ago. I'll take just those two in the last leg of the quaddie. Mudgee 3-4 Lavender Cove is working through his grades nicely after two wins from a spell. He's appreciated the weaker class from his previous provincial runs and should go close again in this, which is one RB level below what he won last time. Mudgee 6-2 Fernfield won a non-TAB Maiden at Orange and an RB60 is hardly much of a step up in grade so he should be a fair chance again. Morphettville 3-1 Would You Believe stepped up to a mile last time and won easily in Class 2 company. He should go well again but the 6/4 on the morning line is way too short.

Black Book: Ascot 2-1 Elliotto did the job for us at a nice $5 last time. Meets the runner up worse at the weights but was coming off a six week break for that run and should be improved.

Friday, January 04, 2008

SELECTIONS - 4 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Rockhampton 2-6 Our Gold Night [3,6,10]
Rockhampton 3-2 Orpenite [10]
Rockhampton 5-1 Aspiran [8]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Rockhampton 4-1, 6-2
Swan Hill 3-2, 6-1, 6-6, 8-1
Taree 4-7

Comments: A bit busy to write up the commentary for today's POOMAs but there are a few shorties there so we'll probably need three of them to get up to make a profit. Hopefully, the slow track at Rocky won't impact things too much.

Thursday, January 03, 2008

SELECTIONS - 3 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Albury 2-3 Nordic Dancer [10]
Narrogin 8-5 Lady Sammyjay [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Albury 5-1, 7-1
Canterbury 1-3
Colac 7-1
Narrogin 6-8
Yarra Glen 6-2, 6-4

(* Any updates at Narrogin and Canterbury later on - UPDATED *)

Comments: Albury 2-3 Nordic Dancer is not much of a horse up against a bunch of other apparent no-hopers. He's $2 on the morning line, which seems at least $1 short to me. Narrogin 8-5 Lady Sammyjay led all of the way to win over this course last time in Maiden company. An RB62 is not much stronger than a Maiden so if she can cross from her wide gate then she'd have to be a fair chance again.

SELECTIONS - 2 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bunbury 7-1 Jungle Hawk [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bunbury 5-4, 7-1, 7-2
Strathalbyn 1-4, 7-2
Wyong 1-2, 1-3, 2-2, 5-1, 5-7, 6-2

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: POOMAs could only hit 1/4 yesterday so a losing start to the year. Bunbury 7-1 Jungle Hawk beat a smallish field conincingly last start. Only goes up slightly in grade but the wide draw won't help but he should run OK.

Black Book: Eagle Farm 7-3 Rockem gave in a bit meekly last time, I thought, and while it's clear he has talent that last run has made me wonder about his intestinal fortitude. The drop back to 1200m will help and I still expect him to win though I don't know about him on the slow track. He's by Easy Rocking so you think he'd be OK.

SELECTIONS - 1 January 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Flemington 6-7 Colonel Parker [17]
Inverell 8-2 Hotshot Hayil [13]
Morphettville 2-11 Shrewd Poppy [2]
Morphettville 7-9 Bleury Jeuney [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 2-1, 6-7
Randwick 5-6, 8-1

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: How can you tell it's January 1? Inverell has its annual TAB meeting. We kick off the 2008 POOMAs afresh and hopefully we can get away to a flyer, though all of these could get beaten today. Flemington 6-7 Colonel Parker is one of Tassie's best sprinters and put in a good performance for 2nd behind Cocinero last time out. This is a really tough race with some accomplished straight course sprinters engaged but he'll be a chance and double e/w odds looks nice. Inverell 8-2 Hotshot Hayil won an RB68 at Lismore last time out in an emotional effort, as he'd fallen at his previous start and jockey Daniel Baker was killed. Hasn't strung two together before but it was a strong effort to win that race and he must be a chance in this. Morphettville 2-11 Shrewd Poppy drops from a poor Class 1 race into a poor Maiden today and steps up to a mile after 5 weeks off. Wouldn't need to be a great horse to win this and anything above $3 looks about right. Morphettville 7-9 Bleury Jeuney is well named for this time of the year, as I suspect that there are a few blurry-eyed punting journeymen out there today. Won well in Maiden company over this course first up though this is a fair jump in grade and I'd want at least $6 to get interested.

Black Book: Ascot 5-7 Second Omen is one of those horses that goes into the black book and then connections decide to enter her for black type races. She has run well in the three Listed events she's been in and should run OK today but I'd rather see her in a lower grade field. Ascot 8-16 Westerly Breeze is another that has raced out of her grade but she might be a chance in this after her strong finishing effort behind today's favourite last time paying $3+ for the place, which was handy. Was ridden a treat by Troy Turner that day and he'll need a repeat performance but must be an e/w chance again.

2008 POOMA SELECTION STRATEGY

The 2008 POOMAs build on the successful systems from 2007 and add a few more in so that there's a total of 17 systems, 3 less than last year. I may add a system here or there, as I've got a few that were right on the cusp of selection. There should be around 12 selections per week.

The POOMAs have now been going for three years
. To remind people why they exist, the tips are posted publicly in order to drive improvement in my selection processes. In that time I've worked out a lot of things that don't work but there are also some good ones and those are the systems that I'll be using for the year of 2008. Note that selections in Western Australia will be posted when final info is available from there, which is later than the eastern state selections.

Selections will be formatted as follows:

Werribee 1-5 Spring Drinks [1,3]

The number/s in brackets are the system that the selection comes from. Some selections come from multiple systems so you'll see more than one system number. I'll keep results up to date regularly.
