A few interesting races around the different venues with Group races in SA and Qld. In the SA Derby I'll go 11-Montcalm to beat 8-Pure Silence and 15-Kamsky. Anything could win that, though and a similar situation in the Goodwood where I'll go 8-Glamour Puss, 19-Segments, 3-Bomber Bill. Wouldn't at all surprise me to see an all female trifecta there. At the Gold Coast 8-My Son Day should go well in race 4, 6-Cateclipse looks the goods in race 5 but whenever I tip against Gumnuts it wins and when I tip it he loses. 3-Perlin will start impossibly short in the Prime Minister's Cup (will he be there watching?) and he may well flog them, as he looks really good. However, in spite of Toulouse Lautrec being an equine spastic, if you put him in the last 4 races that Perlin has been in, under the same conditions, then his form would most likely read 1111, as well. Not that I'd tip that horse, though. 6-Tickle is a superior wet tracker having a slow/heavy record of 6:4-0-2 and on the dry 5:0-1-0. She might be half a chance if there's a chink in Perlin's armour. Anything could win the Hollingdale but with a gun to my head I'd choose 1-Roman Arch with a rough chance to 4-Irish Rover, as he's excellent in affected ground and is up to a suitable distance. A couple of Hawkes' runners to be wary of up there are 3-21 Sighing and 8-20 King Of Spin. At Sandown there are a few shorties in the early races. Leaving aside the Steeple, 5-Miss Debonair will be about $1.60 in race 2. Anytime you find me backing a horse at that price when it's got concussion plates for the first time and you can call the men in white coats to come and collect me. There's not much competition in this race but I'll go with 2-Dorin Donna, as at least she's been beating the boys. In race 3, 3-Cos Snip went, as usual, like a dog shot in the bum in Listed company in Adelaide first up and will start short enough. I'm going to gamble that Cascade Emerald is going to be much better on top of the ground than in the wet, which is all she's struck. 4-El Segundo will also be short enough in race 4 and has a paralysing sprint. Being out of Palos Verde should mean he has the stamina to go a mile. 5-Green Bean will get to the front at some point in the straight, I suspect, and be hard to catch, as will 2-Captious so the favourite won't get everything his own way. In race 6, I'll only be taking two in the quaddie being POOMA selection 8-Dismissal and 5-Butten Shaw. 10-Life's A Bounty has a good record first up and at this track but has a feet gear change with glue on shoes going on. Never a good sign. 5-Sunnah looks the goods in race 7 and there only look a few chances in the last so the quaddie will probably pay light. At Randwick I wouldn't overlook 7-Full On Magic in quaddies in race 7, as he's pretty well placed at the weights.

He'll be out the back early and come steaming home, as usual. The horse is a hopeless wet tracker so if it happened to rain then all bets are off!

I notice in Goulburn R2 that 3-Affliction returns from a spell. He's had some problems but if he's anywhere near right should be too quick for these. 1-Glenlee looks the danger. If 1-Another Archie can't win the 1st at Donald then it's no good.

RESULTS - 8 May 2005
Three from four today after the Sandown meeting was postponed meaning we lost a selection and, of course, the one that runs 2nd (Can Lago) is the second leg of a $100 all up that would have returned me over $3K. The first winner today ended a run of 12 unsuccessful selections, which Nick Aubrey's Risk Of Ruin calculator indicates there's a 78.6% chance of occuring with a 29.2% strike rate and 336 selections so at least there's some statistics to support the crappy recent results!

Holy smoke, Batman!
A very consistent effort today by the systems to score the same number of wins as votes by Kevin Phillip Bong. None. Nothing. Bugger all. Won't see that too often.
Two of the four others I nominated won nicely but it was Willy Leica that was a tragedy beaten in the Qld Guineas. He went to the line under a full nelson on top of a triple nelson after never getting a proper go at them from the top of the straight. The only problem is that everyone else will have spotted it and we won't get odds about him next time in spite of finishing 7th. For Chic Choice to do what she did at just her 2nd start is a sign that she is a very, very talented racehorse. Thank goodness for Live In Vain's win, as I had the trifecta a half dozen times to pull me out of the schtick.

SELECTIONS - 7 May 2005
The selections this month come exclusively from the systems I have both 'in use' and 'watch' that are achieving positive results. You'll see an addition to the selections in the form of a set of numbers laid out as [Strike Rate%/POT%] that let you know how they're going. If there are less than 10 selections then you'll see [0%/0%]
Eagle Farm 1-2 Kendrick Lad [0%/0%]
Flemington 6-14 Activation [0%/0%]
Gold Coast 2-13 Prend [44.4%/6%]
Newcastle 3-4 Digos [34.5%/10%]
Newcastle 4-1 Bright Encounter [34.5%/10%]
Newcastle 6-3 Sonovabeach [34.5%/10%]
Newcastle 8-5 Nobby's Beach [35.0%/98%]
Rosehill 2-3 Federal Reserve [44.4%/47%]
Rosehill 3-1 Canny Princess [40.0%/11%]
Rosehill 5-5 Khaptrina [36.4%/71%]
Horses that are not POOMAs, as they haven't come out of any systems, which is what this month is about, but that I would have probably included last month are: Eagle Farm 6-6 Willy Leica who I think is a pretty good horse; Flemington 7-10 Live In Vain from the on fire Moody camp gets in light at the weights; Morphettville 2-12 Chic Choice won for us as a POOMA last time. Steps up from a provincial Maiden win but Stylish Bow, who is in our black book, will start short and is a risk at the trip stepping up 400m; and Rosehill 6-2 Magsaya who is very good fresh and at the trip.

Didn't have access to a PC today but it didn't matter as there were no qualifying POOMAs anyway.

SELECTIONS - 2 May 2005
Canterbury 2-8 Take Heart is a first starter from the Gai Waterhouse stable that trialled well recently. Gai's having a whale of a time of it lately with winners coming at a terrific rate. The danger might be another first starter, Virago, from the Hawkes' camp that has also trialled well.

=== Next selection process ===
Now that I've set myself a challenge through a poor month I'll change the POOMA selection process by refining it somewhat in order to make up lost ground. I'll remove some of the speculators and probably cut down on the quantity of selections, focusing on those from our good systems. This might actually mean there are no selections on some days or there might be 10.
RESULTS - 1 May 2005
A very average follow up to yesterday's good effort with a sparkling one from eight, which came at the death when Our Grey Halo won with our last pick. They were pretty much winning without names and there were some big form turn arounds. She's Ready went down narrowly to the heavily backed first starter, Taraju, after being held up before the corner. That's twice in a row she's had that problem and I hope she overcomes it, as she's one to follow. Fern Street then ran bravely at Grafton and also went down narrowly. Pity they didn't run a head faster, as then we'd have had a good day.
SELECTIONS - 1 May 2005
Grafton 2-4 Fern Street did a good job first up over this trip after a hard run last time. His first two runs before his spell were even efforts over the 800m scamper and it's best to forget about them. From his good draw he wouldn't need to have improved much to feature strongly in a race devoid of talent.
Horsham 2-9 She's Ready comes out of a very strong Bendigo Maiden, which was won by Lady Migaloo who beat Megadeal and Camaro. Those latter two came out and ran one-two at Sandown during the week. She's Ready drew the outside gate and was taken back to the rear over the 1000m trip where she found herself just behind today's rival, Bella Romance. Unlike that runner, she never got a proper crack at them in the straight and certainly appeared to be going better than Bella Romance over the last furlong. The first starters don't look much chop and, given a clear run at them, I expect her to win.
Narromine 3-1 Kinabalu Magic from the strong Sharon Jeffries stable is the pick in one of those races where the exposed form is a bit how's your father. This one trialled at Warwick Farm last year and hasn't been seen since. Is owned by the trainer and when they're paying the bills themselves they don't tend to keep the slow ones.
Narromine 5-2 Runaway Blaze has had two starts for the Michael Wales stable since arriving from Victoria for a 3rd and a last start win at Tamworth. Normally, backing last start Maiden winners in Class 1 events is a poor plan but this one was strong on the line last time and drops 3kg for in form apprentice, Tim Clark.
Narromine 7-1 Kelly Road rounds out a Jeffries' double of selections. Ran strongly at Albury last time to be beaten less than a length after winning at Dubbo. The danger could be Nellie's Glen with Greg Ryan on board. Don't worry about the barrier, in spite of its funny shape, Narromine is a track where you can win from anywhere.
Penola 7-10 Kingston Sea is a speedy customer who should be suited around this oddly-shaped track with its dog leg run home. They key to the race is that he'll be able to position right on the speed whereas some of the main competitors will be back in the run and be giving him a start at the 400m. First up at Morphettville he was in the race until his condition gave out. Has won in town in similar company and is nicely weighted here.
Pinjarra 8-1 Our Grey Halo was a close 2nd at his first go at the mile last time after backing up quickly from a 1200m run. He's been finding the line well in all of his recent runs so with that effort under his belt should be spot on for today.
