SELECTIONS - 31 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Port Lincoln 5-4 Canophyta [10]
Sunshine Coast 4-1 Fasliyev Dancer [20]
Sunshine Coast 5-1 Awaroa [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moonee Valley 5-2, 8-1
Port Lincoln 5-5
Stawell 3-4, 5-2, 6-11

(* Any updates at Moonee Valley later on *)

Comments: 3/4 yesterday including a double system selection has snuck us in front for the month and we can't finish behind if today's all lose so the win-loss monthly sequence will be maintained, albeit narrowly. Port Lincoln 5-4 Canophyta hasn't won since this time last year but is always thereabouts and generally goes well 2nd up. Looks very well weighted and I'll be taking her blanc in the quaddie. Sunshine Coast 4-1 Fasliyev Dancer won by from here to over the road two starts back and then managed to get beaten as a $1.50 favourite in town when never actually looking likely to win in spite of the fact she ran 3rd. Horses that perform well on these synthetic tracks seem to have a big advantage so I expect her to repeat her run from two starts back and lead all of the way. Sunshine Coast 5-1 Awaroa looks a put-in-take-out job here. After taking three runs to work out what the heck racing is all about he's flogged them at his past two here. It would be a surprise if he got beaten.

SELECTIONS - 30 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gosford 8-10 Miss Orientate [19]
Pinjarra 2-7 Kim Trader [8]
Pinjarra 4-6 Oviate [6,7]
Pinjarra 7-1 Fun Spice [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ipswich 5-1, 6-7

(* Any updates at Pinjarra later on *)

Comments: We're $2 down for the month and have today's and tomorrow's selections to make that up. Godford 8-10 Miss Orientate hasn't missed a place in her 5 runs. She's drawn well and should be in the firing line for a long way although it's a fair quality race for a Class 1. Jade Witness is Silent Witness' half sister but seems to have inherited little of his ability. Pinjarra 2-7 Kim Trader ran a narrow 2nd to the POOMA in race 7, Fun Spice. She started favourite that day and this doesn't look an overly strong race so I expect her to go close. Pinjarra 4-6 Oviate moved from South Australia and won her first race in the West with a win over the straight five course last time out in fast time. Rises 1.5kg in the same class and if she runs the same race again then she'll win again. Pinjarra 7-1 Fun Spice finished hard for a narrow win over this course at his first start. The 3rd placegetter, Destino, was beaten a length and a half and came out and won yesterday at Ascot so that franks the form for this guy and he should run well.

SELECTIONS - 29 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canterbury 1-1 Dragon Dance [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Eagle Farm 6-6

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Canterbury 1-1 Dragon Dance led all of the way in Maiden company and this looks like a race between he and Rapid Magic, which finished just over a length away last time. Anything at around $2.20 seems right.

Black Book: Geelong 2-3 The Sunshine Man had his first run in Victoria since moving down from Queensland at Cranbourne and thundered home for 4th at a track he wasn't suited around. I put him into my black book and made a comment that he needs a big track, which he gets here so I expect him to run well.

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

SELECTIONS - 28 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Pakenham 3-1 Almoneed [1]
Rockhampton 6-11 Belboah [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Pakenham 7-1
Rockhampton 2-5, 2-6, 2-8
Wyong 3-6

Comments: Pakenham 3-1 Almoneed has been disappointing but he won't get too many better chances to break his duck than in this race. It's hard to back him at the current odds of $2.20 and 2-Catching e/w might be a better bet. Rockhampton 6-11 Belboah flogged them when winning his Maiden first up from a spell. Takes a huge step up in grade, though the set weights will help, but $2.60 on the morning line is a good $2 short of what I'd want to back him. Both Nude Etruscan and, especially, Symatina look to have excellent chances in this race.

Monday, October 27, 2008

SELECTIONS - 27 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coonabarabran 7-1
Donald 2-2

Comments: Nothing worth backing today. 27 days into the month and the 40 POOMA selections have returned $40.00. At least there's been no damage done and we can still hope to continue the sequence and finish ahead for the month.

Sunday, October 26, 2008

SELECTIONS - 26 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Cessnock 7-2 Giles [10]
Northam 3-2 White Stripes [18]
Northam 8-1 Touch Of French [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cessnock 8-1
Naracoorte 1-6, 7-4
Terang 8-1

(* UPDATED - No changes *)

Comments: Well, those at the back of the field were no hope given how slowly the Cox Plate was run. Zarita ran a close 4th and she got exactly the run I thought she would. She stayed on well and she'll run well in the Melbourne Cup if she starts. Cessnock 7-2 Giles drew 13 of 13 and nearly broke his duck over this course last time out. Has not drawn a decent gate in his 4 start career and he should win this from the inside draw. Northam 3-2 White Stripes led them up and fell in over this course first up and this isn't much of a rise in grade so he should be in the race for a long way. Northam 8-1 Touch Of French split two Northam wins with an unplaced effort in town. Looks well placed and should get a soft run from the gate so he looks an excellent e/w chance.

Saturday, October 25, 2008

SELECTIONS - 25 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kembla Grange 2-3 Gold Mount [10]
Moonee Valley 3-2 Fly Higher [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Doomben 3-7
Moonee Valley 1-6, 2-7
Yarra Glen 4-1, 6-5

(* Early post today so any updates at Ascot and elsewhere later on *)

Comments: Moonee Valley 3-2 Fly Higher drops from Group 1 and 2 races back to this much easier affair. Trainer Lee Freedman has scratched the two stablemates, which is a good lead. It's rare for System 1 to have selections on two days in a row let alone three so let's hope it can make it a hat trick here. Kembla Grange 2-3 Gold Mount has been in consistent form without winning recently. From the ideal draw should be right in the firing line and give us a good run for our money at around $3.80.

Black Book: Moonee Valley 8-5 Master O'Reilly settled last of 17 in the Caulfield Cup and was still 3rd last and deep on the corner. Put in a fair old dash but died late for a 2.6L 7th. He has the advantage that he can make a long, sustained run and I expect him to be in the finish.

Cox Plate: This looks a race between the girls and particularly 9-Princess Coup, 11-Zarita and 12-Samantha Miss. As mentioned above, 5-Master O'Reilly has a show and I was more impressed with his run behind Littorio two runs back than I was with Zipping, as Master O'Reilly came from behind him and did a lot of work while Zipping did what he always seems to do and flashed home late. I'll be having something each way on Master O'Reilly. This is not a strong Cox Plate and for that reason I'm also going to have a little each way bet on Zarita. She was really good three runs back against Weekend Hussler over a mile then ran home OK in the Underwood before being ridden poorly last time and having no luck. From the inside gate she's going to get the perfect suck along and could be right in the finish at big odds. Princess Coup is a terrific mare and her 2000m form reads 12221 in top NZ and Australian races. Surround is the only filly to win this race. Is Samantha Miss as good as her? She might not have to be and with no weight looks a real threat - if she can get into the race from a rearward settling position. If one of the two favourites doesn't win then it looks a real lottery.

Caulfield: My tips for each race are: 1-3, 2-7, 3-2, 4-3, 5-1, 6-1, 7-3, 8-5/11, 9-8, 10-9

Friday, October 24, 2008

SELECTIONS - 24 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Benalla 3-1 Aiglon [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 7-1, 7-2

Comments: Another winner yesterday means we've snuck a couple of dollars ahead this month. Let's hope the recovery continues with Benalla 3-1 Aiglon comes from the same high performing system that gave us yesterday's winner. It would be a bit of a surprise if this guy got beaten but he'll be around $1.40 if you want to have a go.

Thursday, October 23, 2008

SELECTIONS - 23 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ballarat 2-6 Penina [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geraldton 1-6
Ipswich 8-2

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on *)

Comments: Well, we snuck into the black for the month but only by $0.50; still it's better than where we've been all month. Another Pommy invader won a Cup race. I don't think that the Geelong Cup form is anywhere near as strong as the Caulfield Cup form but the winner was impressive though the topweight was really unlucky and fought on well for 4th. If Septimus really is a much better horse than the other imports then he may well have a mortgage on the Melbourne Cup. Ballarat 2-6 Penina is one of those horses that I hate seeing come out as a POOMA, as it's had 6 runs for 5 placings all as favourite. Has been beaten by some OK types and this field doesn't look that strong so the $2.20 on the morning line is probably the right price.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

SELECTIONS - 22 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canterbury 3-2 Dorf Command [9]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 1-2
Canterbury 1-2
Doomben 4-2, 5-2

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Canterbury 3-2 Dorf Command has won her last two in nice fashion at Kembla Grange. Gets in here pretty well at the weights after the claim and given she won't be far from the lead around the turn you'd have to think she'll look a chance in the straight. The Geelong Cup's status as a lead up race to the Melbourne Cup received a boost a few years back when Media Puzzle flogged them before his famous win on the first Tuesday in November with Damien Oliver on board shortly after his brother had died in a trackwork accident in Perth. This year's race looks like having little bearing on the Melbourne Cup though the winner might be good enough to sneak a place. It really looks like a race between 1-Light Vision and 6-The Wolverine. Light Vision beat Baughurst last time and that horse came out and walloped them on Saturday in a similar class of race while The Wolverine has beaten Zavite home when they've met and has been close to Light Vision. I'll have to stick 2-Bauer into quaddies, as the overseas horse cost me the quaddie at Caulfield on Saturday and this fellow looks like he's got similar form to that winner.

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

SELECTIONS - 21 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kyneton 6-8, 8-4

Comments: Nothing today. Leave it alone.

Monday, October 20, 2008

SELECTIONS - 20 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bathurst 1-1 Disrepute [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bathurst 2-3
Murwillumbah 2-12, 3-8, 7-5

Comments: Bathurst 1-1 Disrepute has two wins and a second from three first up runs. Those are his only successes in a 12 run career so he obviously goes best when fresh and I expect him to go close.

Sunday, October 19, 2008

SELECTIONS - 19 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Hobart 7-4 Wealthy Lad [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballina 2-5, 7-4, 7-8
Hobart 1-1
Pinjarra 5-11
Sunshine Coast 1-6, 1-7, 2-6

(* Any updates at Pinjarra later on *)

Comments: The POOMA home at $2.60 yesterday and 3/10 for my selections at Caulfield returning $14.50 so that was OK. What wasn't OK was not putting the overseas horse in my quaddie so missed out on the $13K result. If you read what I wrote then you might have been a chance at the $17K trifecta in the Cup, as all placegetters had run a place at their last start. Hobart 7-4 Wealthy Lad has returned from a spell in good form and worked through the grades along the way. Looks pretty well placed at the weights here and he'll be hard to beat.

Saturday, October 18, 2008

SELECTIONS - 18 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Toowoomba 3-1 Cattleman [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 4-10
Caulfield 9-10
Eagle Farm 6-2
Morphettville 7-1
Narromine 6-1, 7-1
Randwick 7-3

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Caulfield Cup day is always a good day to have a go, as there are good races with good horses to back that will be value. In the Caulfield Cup I've put Master O'Reilly on top (see black book comment) with the dangers being Littorio, Nom De Jeu, Red Ruler, Boundless and Riva San. I give Weekend Hussler no hope. Winners since 2000 have been Diatribe ($6.90), Ethereal ($9.10), Northerly ($4.50), Mummify ($6.30), Elvstroem ($4.10), Railings ($8.20), Tawqeet ($19) and Master O'Reilly ($5.60). Here's something to think about when trying to work out the winner and multiples. Every single placegetter since 2000 has run a place at their last start, they've all run either 7 days or 14 days ago and in Group 1 or 2 races. Aged 4, 5 or 6 they've all been at their 3rd, 4th or 5th run from a spell. Using those this year gives us 6, 9, 12, 13, 18 to go along with number 3. Going through the card at Caulfield my top selections in each race are: 1-2, 2-5, 3-9 (keen on this one), 4-1 (should win), 5-8, 6-15, 7-2 (keen e/w), 8-3, 9-3, 10-5. Toowoomba 3-1 Cattleman looks the winner here with Chakvetadze out of the race, as he's dropping in grade after a good 2nd, albeit when odds on, in Class 3 company last time.

Black Book: Ascot 7-6 Swan Bee won under a throttle hold two starts back, went into the black book and then gave us a small return at odds on when winning before going for a spell. This is a hard race so I'll assess him on this run. Ascot 8-10 Inarticulate made it 5 in a line and then was beaten at $1.50. Resumes from a spell and should run well in this, his first go in decent company. Caulfield 8-3 Master O'Reilly won this race for us last year as a black booker and put in a terrific effort 2nd up when steaming home for 2nd place behind Littorio. He's the best mile and a half horse in this field and I expect him to go very close to racking up a second win in the race. Caulfield 9-3 Sunburnt Land has been revealed as a pretty smart sprinter and has been good to us as a black booker. He's going to get a perfect run from the gate and he looks a great chance along with Grand Duels and Aichi. Eagle Farm 3-4 Chakvetadze could be absolutely anything given the way she's won her only two runs. Cleared out by 7.8L last time, no mean feat over 1000m, and won under a Full Nelson. Should justify her short odds in this. Randwick 7-8 Dillinger is first up at 1400m after being unlucky not to win when wintering in Brisbane due to the Randwick track being closed for World Youth Day. He'll have residual fitness after a break of only 66 days and I'll be taking him one out in quaddies.

Friday, October 17, 2008

SELECTIONS - 17 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Townsville 1-3 Estrata [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mornington 6-3, 7-1
Queanbeyan 5-1
Taree 8-3, 8-6

Comments: Townsville 1-3 Estrata has had two runs in FNQ since an unsuccessful 13 start career in Victoria for a 3rd and a 4th. Has drawn a tad awkwardly again and 1000m probably isn't his best distance but this isn't a strong field so he must have some sort of hope.

Thursday, October 16, 2008

SELECTIONS - 16 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moe 8-14

(* Any updates at Bunbury later on *)

Comments: Bugger all again today. Hope you got the Caulfield quaddies yesterday. I didn't.

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

SELECTIONS - 15 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Warwick Farm 7-4

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Well, I correctly assessed that we'd get three winners yesterday, which was a welcome result. Nothing much from the systems today unless something pops out at update time. A few good races in Melbourne, obviously. In the Mitty's Cup, race 5, it looks to be between 3-Cocinero, 9-Let Loushe and former black booker 6-In The Shadows. The Thousand Guineas, race 6, I've pared down to 2-Gallica and 9-Kimselly, which looks to have the best chance of those with Samantha Miss form. The Mares' carsales.com.au, race 7, looks a dead set lottery so go wide in quaddies. Forced to go for one I'd take 4-Autumn Jeuney. Whatever quaddie I work out I'm taking the field in the last leg.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

SELECTIONS - 14 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Grafton 1-2 Montana Hilton [20]
Rockhampton 3-2 Carry The Clubs [19]
Rockhampton 5-8 Me Here [10]
Rockhampton 7-1 Riverlea Crown [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Grafton 7-2, 8-1
Rockhampton 4-4

Comments: Grafton 1-2 Montana Hilton won here three runs ago, was then beaten narrowly in the big mile race at Ballina before sitting deep and being beaten less than 3 lengths in an R0 race in Brisbane. Only has to repeat that form to win this. Rockhampton 3-2 Carry The Clubs is a really nice type with 3 wins and 2 2nds from only 5 runs. He was a comfortable winner first up after striking interference at the start and he really should just about get home again. Rockhampton 5-8 Me Here was a beaten 7/4 favourite in the race won by Solar Secret here 11 days ago. He was a bit flat footed that day but he had dropped back in distance from two 1200m runs to a 1000m event so the step back up to six furlongs should see him go close. Rockhampton 7-1 Riverlea Crown frutrated connections by taking 6 runs to break his duck since he was purchased from Victoria but he did it in style and this doesn't look an overly strong race so he'll be in the finish. The POOMAs have been on a poor trot lately but it's entirely possible that we can get 3 winners up today so fingers crossed.

Monday, October 13, 2008

SELECTIONS - 13 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Goulburn 1-1, 5-1, 6-1

Comments: Nothing today. I'm still smarting from missing the Caulfield quaddie on Saturday...

Sunday, October 12, 2008

SELECTIONS - 12 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geraldton 2-1 Monaco Prince [18]
Sunshine Coast 8-3 General Purple [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Clare 3-1
Geraldton 1-7
Hobart 8-2
Kilmore 1-11
Sunshine Coast 3-2, 3-13

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on *)

Comments: Well, I picked out Alamosa in the Toorak, stood it out, only took a couple of horses in the Guineas and managed to miss the last leg by a wart because I took Belong To Many out of my selections due to drawing 16 of 16. Cost me $16K so I was thrilled to bits with that. Geraldton 2-1 Monaco Prince made it 2/2 first up when finishing well to win over 1200m here last time out. The step up in trip should suit and he really should go very close. Sunshine Coast 8-3 General Purple drops back in trip after finishing 2nd as a short price favourite over 1400m. Won over this course 3 starts back and he must be a chance here.

Saturday, October 11, 2008

SELECTIONS - 11 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 5-1 Shipyard [18]
Port Macquarie 6-11 Naked Spirit [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 7-11
Caulfield 1-10, 6-3, 7-7
Eagle Farm 1-3, 2-1
Kembla Grange 2-6, 8-2
Pakenham 1-3, 4-14
Toowoomba 1-11

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 5-1 Shipyard doesn't tend to put two wins together but gets into this race with 1kg less for winning in the same class and over the same course so he should go close. Port Macquarie 6-11 Naked Spirit hasn't won for 18 months but might be a sneaky chance at long odds with the drop back in trip. She'll certainly help the POOMA stats if she can lob. In some of the big races today at Caulfield I think that Alamosa looks a fantastic chance in the Toorak Hcp. His mile form in Group race in NZ is outstanding. The Guineas looks like a race between Duporth, Dreamscape and Whobegotyou. I also think that the non-POOMA in race 1 there, Zizz, has a great chance at double each way odds. It was a strong win last time.

Black Book: Cheltenham 5-9 Boat Quay was disappointing first up but we'll stick with her from the good draw here and see whether she's worthy of staying in the black book. Eagle Farm 6-4 Rockem will win this race barring bad luck. Simple as that. Quinella with Catchit and Release Me.

Friday, October 10, 2008

SELECTIONS - 10 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Moonee Valley 1-5 Tantomile [5]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Port Macquarie 6-1
Wagga 3-10, 4-1, 4-4

(* Any updates at Moonee Valley later on *)

Comments: Well, I did suggest that you take on the POOMA yesterday on Betfair, as being a POOMA selection has been the kiss of death lately. The horse, Whimpy, started $1.30 and ran 3rd. I was clever/lucky enough to take a First4 on SuperTAB for a half unit, which lobbed and paid an amazing $10,800 in a 7 horse race so I was happy that the thing got beat. Nothing today unless something pops up at MV later on. UPDATE: Moonee Valley 1-5 Tantomile comes out of my three horse race system. How can it work when there's no form? That is the mystery, Grasshopper...I actually have no idea how this one will go but being a POOMA at present means it'll probably run 3rd.

Thursday, October 09, 2008

SELECTIONS - 9 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ipswich 2-1 Whimpy [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gosford 1-7

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Ipswich 2-1 Whimpy is going to start a short price favourite to win this after putting together a picket fence at his last three runs. Given how poorly we've been going lately it might actually be worth taking him on with Betfair.

Wednesday, October 08, 2008

SELECTIONS - 8 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 2-1 Golden Heart [18]
Belmont 7-2 Dante's Star [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bathurst 5-4
Belmont 3-2
Doomben 7-5, 8-1

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 2-1 Golden Heart rises 2kg against the limit for his strong class/course win last time. From the inside draw and with W Pike on board he'd have to go close again. Belmont 7-2 Dante's Star resumed from a spell with a narrow win over 1300m here. Also rises 2kg against the limit but has to contend with an outside draw today so he's going to need a good ride to get him home.

Tuesday, October 07, 2008

SELECTIONS - 7 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 7-2, 7-7
Kembla Grange 5-9, 8-5
Townsville 1-2

Comments: I got to the last leg of 5 quaddies over the weekend all with $10K+ dividends and couldn't land one; in fact, didn't run a place in 3 of them, which takes some doing. I also picked out the 1st, 3rd & 4th (stood out) legs of the quaddie in Sydney on Saturday and missed Theseo in the Epsom and it paid $127K so that was just terrific. Nothing today again.

Monday, October 06, 2008

SELECTIONS - 6 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bairnsdale 3-2
Ballina 9-1

Comments: Nothing worth backing today as far as I can see.

Sunday, October 05, 2008

SELECTIONS - 5 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Devonport 3-1 Morsonique [18]
Devonport 7-3 Loroupe [19]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Benalla 6-1
Cootamundra 2-1, 3-4
Devonport 2-13

(* Any updates at Toodyay later on *)

Comments: Devonport 3-1 Morsonique hadn't won for 14 runs before going around as a 10/9 favourite in a 5 horse field over this course and winning easily on a wet track 10 days ago. This isn't much of a field so he should be thereabouts again though I don't think that the $2.50 on the morning line is value at all. Devonport 7-3 Loroupe is a nice horse with 3 wins and 2 placings from his 5 runs. Jumps a couple of grades here and a few of these go OK so he's another that I'm not interested in taking short odds on his chances.

Saturday, October 04, 2008

SELECTIONS - 4 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Doomben 3-6 Ginko Gold [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gold Coast 8-4
Murtoa 2-8
Randwick 3-3, 9-11

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Doomben 3-6 Ginko Gold was good in her first up win at the Sunshine Coast and then put in another good performance over 1030m here in Class 3 company last time. She rises a couple of grades here and steps up in trip but from the draw and with the weight drop she looks right in the finish.

Black Book: Belmont 8-3 Univeral Ruler made it 5 in a line in March when winning in Listed company at Ascot. He then had a break, went to Singapore, drew 13 of 13 and ran a 6.5L 8th the Takeover Target and Magnus in the Kranji International. If he's anywhere near right then he'll win this. Doomben 1-5 Slim Pickings has been good to us in the last 12-18 months but I don't really like his chances here even though he has a good record at the track and trip. He's a horse that needs a big field and the speed that usually comes from that, which he won't get here so we'll wait for another day to back him. Flemington 8-5 Master O'Reilly is back for another cups campaign and I'll be looking at his sectional times to see how he's going given that he's had a break since his even first up run. It would be a big surprise if anything beat Weekend Hussler today. Flemington 9-14 Vormista was terrific first up, as she usually is, in a mares' race when she drew the car park, settled back and got home hard for 3rd. Has drawn 2 here, which is the wrong side of the track so she'll need luck. Flemington 9-17 Sunburnt Land has drawn 1 and they're guaranteed to come down the outside rail so Chris Symons will do well to get him into a winning spot from there. The horse has been a revelation since being kept to sprints and I expect a big effort. (* Note that the Flemington track man reckons the inside is 2 lengths faster than the outside. If that's the case then we're in good space *). Randwick 10-11 Neroli only just got home when I thought she'd win comfortably last time. Has drawn the fence and will get a cosy run so you'd think she'll go close at nice odds though it's worth remembering that now winner of this race has come from inside gate 6 in the last 7 years. It looks like a four horse race to me with Miss Pageantry an obvious danger and Raqas having drawn well. I think that Imagining will also be in the finish given she's coming from a much better gate than her recent effort.

SELECTIONS - 3 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Rockhampton 6-7

Comments: The non-POOMA got home yesterday (he might be a nice type that Buffett) and the one at Rocky looks to have a fair chance today, too.

SELECTIONS - 2 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 4-9

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Nothing happening today, which is fine by me. Unlike the Boomtown Rats, I don't like Thursdays. With the current happenings on Wall Street it might be that the non-POOMA at Geelong, Buffett, seems a topical tip even if the horse was a bit one-paced at his debut run.

SELECTIONS - 1 October 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bendigo 1-2 Damselfly [6,7]
Canterbury 6-1 Joku [8,18,20]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bendigo 3-1
Eagle Farm 1-3
Geraldton 7-9

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on *)

Comments: Bendigo 1-2 Damselfly was slowly away and settled at the rear of the field over this course at her first run. Once she hit top gear she put paid to them and Ollie let her coast to the line a length clear in an impressive effort. Up in grade but back to her own sex here and she ran fast time in that win so a repeat performance would see her make it two from two. Canterbury 6-1 Joku looks like starting short odds again and looks like winning again even though he steps up to 1900m from the 1550m last time. I'm not interested in backing him at an odds on quote.

Black Book: Eagle Farm 1-1 Don Vito was back in last place and being urged along some 4-5 lengths behind the 2nd last horse on the corner at the Gold Coast over 1800m 11 days ago. Once he put his mind on the job he rocketed to the line to run 3rd, which you would have never believed just 400m earlier in the run. This is an awful looking race so he'd have to be some hope at nice e/w odds. Eagle Farm 6-6 Rontgen went into the black book after his luckless 7th at Townsville when he went to the line under a triple Nelson. Nearly got the prize at double figure odds for us at Cairns and I'm going to follow up on the stable's confidence of bringing him all of the way into town in what looks a very winnable race for him.
