SELECTIONS - 2 September 2006

POOMA selections:

Benalla 6-8 Ambitious General

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 2-7, 7-3
Benalla 6-8
Caulfield 4-2, 5-8, 5-10, 5-11, 6-10, 7-15, 7-17, 8-2, 8-14
Doomben 4-3
Kembla 6-5
Rosehill 1-6, 2-8, 4-3, 6-7, 6-9, 6-12, 7-1, 8-12

Today: I like the look of Doomben 4-3 The Spear even if the track is heavy. This is an easier race than last time, she's by Lion Hunter so should handle the conditions and will be a really good price in the small field (around $4). The danger looks to be 2-Matzumi and I'm prepared to be against prepost favourite Stolit. At Rosehill 1-6 Fast And Famous will be a short price favourite but 2-Serious Money has some really good form and comes off a strong 2nd to Keltic Flash. That galloper would be favourite in this field so I think there's some value to be had backing against the Beadman ride (which is always perilous, of course). I'm pretty keen on 7-3 Alpine Lad at Belmont and if he doesn't win then you'll know I haven't got the Perth quaddie. The POOMA, Ambitious General, at Benalla won his Maiden softly at Warracknabeal last time and the step up in trip looks really suitable.

The Caulfield meeting looks like a particularly good place to have a bet today. The rail is out 10m, which means that on pace runners are going to be hard to run down, especially if there's not much pace in the race. Reviewing the entire meeting:

Race 1: A good field with formlines that come from all over the shop, which makes it difficult to be confident. There doesn't seem to be much pace so you'll need to find one that positions up in the first four. For that reason I'll go for the World Joy-Al Anood quinella from 12 August to repeat itself with Al Anood to reverse the result on World Joy. They both need to press forward from their wide gates at what is a tricky start Sunny Skies ran around like a duck in that race and should finish closer if it goes in a straight line. Selections: 4-Al Anood, 9-World Joy, 10-Nashita

Race 2: Again, not much pace here, which will play into the hands of Soleil who just got nutted on the line by Assertive Guest last time out. Purde and Pavlova got back and ran home into 3rd and 4th in that race. This is a smaller field, which will allow them to be closer on the corner but they'll need to start their sprints at the 600m mark to be in the firing line on the corner. Miss Theron will be handy and could lob a place. Selections: 6-Soleil, 11-Pavlova, 2-Purde

Race 3: Haaaaaaaaaaaraaaaaaaaadaaaaaaasun. People are talking about how the small field, the pace, the second up syndrome and the presence of Miss Finland will bring about his defeat. Good luck to them, I reckon he'll win though I do think that the good filly will give him a real race. If there is to be an upset then I think it'll come from Letrice. Selections: 3-Haradasun, 4-Miss Finland, 6-Letrice

Race 4: This is a difficult affair and if you like something then make sure you get good value. Recline is going to have to go forward from her wide gate but if she finds the lead or sits outside stablemate Napa Sky then there's not much to take her on. Megadeal should be able to position behind them and I like this one's chances. Fullaz, Swish Trish, Xaaranthe and Pin Up look to have a hope. Selections: 3-Megadeal, 12-Napa Sky, 6-Swish Trish

Race 5: Odds on Maybe Better? He sat behind Minson in a race run at an ordinary tempo, got out in plenty of time and really only one-batted to the line. He's down in weight, up in trip and in a weaker race but taking such a short price doesn't seem like good value to me. Growl just keeps improving and he'll be close enough and Show Barry is more than capable of being in the finish. The one that I reckon might surprise at good each way odds is Tommifrancs. He gets everything made to order here and goes well second up. Selections: 4-Tommifrancs, 3-Maybe Better, 8-Growl

Race 6: The Memsie is always a good race and this looks no exception. Lad Of The Manor was scratched a fortnight ago when he slightly injured himself before the race. He's never been unplaced from 6 goes at Caulfield (1 win), is 3/5 first up and has 2 wins and 3 placings at the trip from 6 goes. Given that he'll be paying better than $2 for the place that might be a half smart bet. It's hard to see how the favourite, El Segundo, won't be in the finish after his first up 2nd in the Aurie's Star. Did they count Minson's legs when he got back to the enclosure after his last run? It was the first time he had started favourite and he was pretty awful. I reckon he'll run an improved race today by putting more speed into the race than he did last time. Zipping was also fantastic in the Aurie's Star coming from dead last and finishing as quickly as El Segundo. He is a top quality horse and it would not surprise me if he won, though there'll need to be a fast pace, which I think he'll get. Apache Cat comes off a good run also. Fields Of Omagh is no slouch, even if he is a 9YO, and $21 seems overs to me. A really tough assignment so I'll go for value. Selections: 6-Zipping, 2-Lad Of The Manor, 5-El Segundo

Race 7: This looks like a sit and sprint affair and a deadset lottery. I can't work out where the speed comes from. Perhaps Blaniak will press forward today rather than go back like he did last time and lead along with Pinezero. Perhaps Steptoe will launch forward from his wide gate, as well. He's by sire of hopeless wet trackers, Metal Storm, and his last two runs on rain affected ground should be ignored. He goes OK. Chiak should get the run of the race and Matras found the line well in the last furlong first up and she looks to have a pretty good chance in this. I'll be going wide in the quaddie in this one. Selections: 5-Chiak, 9-Matras, 10-Steptoe

Race 8: This is a bit of an ask to finish off the quaddie. California Dane and Magnus are two good horses that have strong chances. Tesbury Jack doesn't know how to run a bad race, Orange County goes well, Judusk sneaks in well for a horse that's won 10 races and Magically looks like she'll get the run of the race. Holding found his form last start and Shadoways is no slouch and unbeaten first up. Nothing would surprise me here. Selections: 2-California Dane, 12-Shadoways, 16-Magically

Yesterday: Very uninspiring racing yesterday and I didn't see anything that was really worth following.

POOMAs: There were no POOMA selections yesterday.
