SELECTIONS - 31 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Morphettville 3-2 Exalted Thomas [18]
Toowoomba 6-2 Kneel And Raise [10,13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 2-3
Kembla 5-3, 7-5
Morphettville 1-4, 5-3
Rosehill 8-4
Toowoomba 7-8

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: It's the last day of the month and we need to find $10 profit to finish in front, which looks a bit tough with the selections we've got. A very wet track for the Queensland Oaks and while Heavenly Glow is the clear top chance I'll be having a little e/w on 16-Hindsight, which is a Maiden, but might run a race on the heavy track at huge odds. In race 2 up there I think that 11-Colonial Lass will run a much improved race. She has a terrific record on very wet ground and her last four runs have been OK given she drew off the track in three of them. In Rosehill race 7 I expect 7-Eight Moons to run a good race. He's by Octagonal and is typical of that breed in not being able to handle wet tracks. Gets a dry track here and I expect him to go well. I also expect 9-Bomber Command to give them a fright in that race, as the drop back in trip will really help. Morphettville 3-2 Exalted Thomas went without winning for at least 13 runs (the form I have) before winning 2 of his last 3. Rises 2kg in weight for winning in this class and over this course last time and there's no reason why he can't win again. Toowoomba 6-2 Kneel And Raise thrashed a Maiden field before running a good 2nd to the flying Burdekin Blues last time. Drops from Class 3 to Class 1 company and should win this.

Black Book: Belmont 7-2 El Presidente is up against Marasco. Will the up and comer be able to knock off the established champ? That's the big question. I'm glad to see that Troy Turner is not riding the horse, as I thought he rode it poorly last time in with the horse's ability overcoming some bad decision making in the run. I expect a big performance. Rosehill 5-5 Holdem was no hope at the 200m mark at Canberra last time when a 10/9 favourite. Put in huge strides, weaving through the traffic to lob in the last hop in a terrific, black book worthy performance. The comment I wrote in my black book at the time was that ordinary horses can't do what he did. It looks a race with a lot of chances and I thought we might get a nice price about this up and comer but he's currently showing even money with IAS fixed odds. Toowoomba 5-1 Mini Maizing steps up to 1009m from 800m, which is probably as far as he wants to go but looks the clear top pick.

SELECTIONS - 30 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sunshine Coast 7-6 1 Riseupsinging [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Casino 8-4, 8-11
Sale 8-11

Comments: We got home comfortably yesterday with 3 winners so that was good. Today looks an extraordinarly bad day to have a go so I'm happy that there's just one selection. Sunshine Coast 7-6 Riseupsinging has been thereabouts in recent runs over staying trips. Drops back 600m to 1200m here so you'd think she'd be no hope but she's such a good wet tracker that you can't count her out. Her dry track record is 21:0-3-1 and wet track is 20:5-5-2 so if they paddle late ahead of her then she could run them down.

SELECTIONS - 29 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Northam 5-2 Giho [13]
Northam 6-1 Colleonard [18]
Northam 7-2 Telluride [6]
Townsville 4-4 Diamond Pursuit [7]
Townsville 5-1 Expecting [10]
Wyong 4-4 Flaxmill Road [13]
Wyong 6-5 Worth The Effort [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 6-7, 6-14, 8-1
Northam 5-2
Townsville 2-3, 6-2
Wyong 1-2, 4-2, 4-4, 7-10, 8-5

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Quite a few selections today and we'll probably need a few to get home in order for us to finish in front. Northam 5-2 Giho has knocked up a couple of wins lately and looks a fair chance to bring up the hat trick. He doesn't look that well weighted and he's going to need some speed on in order to run home over the top of them so I would want to get $4 or so, which I think is unlikely. Northam 6-1 Colleonard led all of the way over 1300m in this grade last time here. Hasn't managed to get home in two previous attempts at this distance, has drawn wide and has a 4kg apprentice on board so I'd be looking for a fair price of $6+ to get interested. Northam 7-2 Telluride won an RB67 over this course last time and drops to an RB64 with a 3kg rise in weight. If he runs up to that effort then he'll be winning this race. Townsville 4-4 Diamond Pursuit broke his duck nicely over this course at his 2nd start two weeks ago. This is a pretty even field so we should get some good value about him. Townsville 5-1 Expecting ran an even race first up and drops a grade here. Took a few runs to really get his act together last time in but should be a chance in an even field. Wyong 4-4 Flaxmill Road finally got home first in Maiden company at Hawkesbury at his 11th run. The topweight looks very hard to beat but if there's a chink in that horse's armour then our pick could find it. Wyong 6-5 Worth The Effort goes fast and should be a chance in this from his good draw. He probably can't lead the topweight but should sit right on that horse and get his chance to run him down late.

SELECTIONS - 28 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 8-1 Dvoryan [18]
Morphettville 6-7 Graskey [10]
Sandown 6-1 Frigid [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canterbury 5-2
Morphettville 5-5, 8-7
Sandown 6-14

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: After a few days without a selection we have a fair few today including at Darwin. We'll probably need a couple to win to finish in front. Belmont 8-1 Dvoryan flogged home from near last to win an RB79 race over 1400m last time at this track. The rise in trip will help, as will the drop in grade. Of course, having W Pike on board will not hurt his chances either. Morphettville 6-7 Graskey led throughout and won easily here first up at big odds. This isn't much harder so if it wasn't a fluke last time then he must be a chance again. Sandown 6-1 Frigid is in rare form putting together 4 wins on the trot. Is not very well in at the weights in this race but it's hard to knock his recent record so must be a chance again.

Black Book: Belmont 6-1 Chachi is on his last chance as a black booker. He goes well fresh, goes fast and is in a race he can win. Anything near $2.80 seems the right price. Canterbury 7-6 Mr Novara got home for us at $10 last time when ridden by a senior jockey after going into the black book when running 4th under 4kg apprentice Heather Poland. Has an apprentice on here but he's riding well and I reckon we'll get a good run at nice odds again.

SELECTIONS - 27 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Warrnambool 3-7 Sir Penthouse [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Hawkesbury 1-8
Rockhampton 4-2, 7-8, 7-9
Warrnambool 4-5, 6-2, 8-2

Comments: Our selection yesterday was never a hope when it became clear that drawing wide and coming from back in the field was a major disadvantage. At Rockhampton today we see the running of the Magic Millions Rock worth $85K. 8-High Rolling Woman and 9-Black Minx look to have a hundred lengths on the rest of them, depending on how much 10-Love Hit Me has improved. I reckon the trifecta is 8 x 9 x 2-10. Warrnambool 3-7 Sir Penthouse plummets in grade and all he needs to be able to do is handle the slow track in order to win. The step up to 2000m suits, as do the wide, open spaces of the Warrnambool race track.

Monday, May 26, 2008

SELECTIONS - 26 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Tamworth 7-1 Brackley Hatch [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Benalla 3-4, 9-14
Port Macquarie 5-11, 6-11
Tamworth 1-6

Comments: Lady Lozen gave a great sight yesterday at Kalgoorlie at $15, leading into the straight and being caught in the last hop. If she'd drawn a better gate she might have got home. We also landed a $30 winner with one of my oldest systems, which is aimed at picking ruffies. It's got a 37/292 (13%) record at 36% profit over a 4 year period. The ruffies systems show a nice profit for the place and it's worth chucking them into multiples. Tamworth 7-1 Brackley Hatch won here two starts back before getting home as a POOMA at a juicy $16 last time out, again over this course. Has had a little freshen up and should steam home late again from back in the field.

Sunday, May 25, 2008

SELECTIONS - 25 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 4-1 Smooth Manouvres [18]
Kalgoorlie 6-4 Lazy Lozen [10]
Kalgoorlie 7-2 Prince Of Life [10]
Mildura 5-4 Classic Dash [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 2-10
Bathurst 4-1
Kalgoorlie 8-2
Mildura 2-4, 3-6, 5-2, 9-9
Nowra 5-12
Sunshine Coast 8-5

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Kalgoorlie 4-1 Smooth Manouvres has struck form winning her last couple here in the same grade. Drops in weight after the claim and steps up in trip to 1400m for the first time but she was strong to the line last time over 1300m so I expect her to go close from her good draw. Kalgoorlie 6-4 Lady Lozen has been cursed with wide draws since returning from a spell and gets that again today. She drops in grade and weight with the claim and if she can get a half decent run is going to give this a shake at nice odds. Kalgoorlie 7-2 Prince Of Life has everything made to order today to put in a good run. Hasn't got much of a winning record but neither do the rest so I expect him to be in the finish. Mildura 5-4 Classic Dash is a last start course and distance Maiden winner that has had a seven week break, which normally indicates something isn't right so I'd be a little wary about this one, especially at the odds, even though he looks very well placed in a RB62 race.

Saturday, May 24, 2008

SELECTIONS - 24 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Doomben 7-1 Apache Cat [12]
Morphettville 4-1 Green Machine [18]
Newcastle 8-3 Red Hot Prince [18]
Toowoomba 7-7 Phoenix Belle [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 4-4, 7-2
Doomben 3-10, 7-6
Gold Coast 2-12
Moonee Valley 5-14, 7-6
Morphettville 7-5, 7-7
Newcastle 6-8, 8-4, 8-9
Randwick 4-4, 8-3

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: I am in terrific form. The only one I potted yesterday was the only one that got home - at a useful $5. That's two days in a row I've done that. I should pot horses more often. Doomben 7-1 Apache Cat has drawn perfectly to get a nice run and win at about $1.50. Our black booker, Vormista, looks the danger. It'll be interesting to see how Helideck, which has been fantastic for me recently, goes in this race. Morphettville 4-1 Green Machine won at big odds over this course last time out. Only rises a little in grade and a repeat does would not surprise, as he did the same thing last time in. Newcastle 8-3 Red Hot Prince broke his duck over this course three weeks ago. Has drawn off the track so will need everything to go right in order to get home but should be OK odds. Toowoomba 7-7 Phoenix Belle ran a very good 2nd behind a smart mare in Dirty last time in and then something went wrong when running poorly last time. If she runs up to her previous first up effort then she'll win this.

Black Book: Belmont 7-2 Second Omen has let the side down a few times since going into the black book but I want to keep following her, as she's the sort of horse that could string a few wins together. Goes well fresh but this is short of idea so I expect her to be steaming home late and be in the finish. Doomben 7-11 Vormista ran 2nd to Apache Cat last time, as predicted, but got much closer than anyone expected due mainly to the slow early pace of the race. There's not a whole heap of pace in this race either so she's going to have trouble finding a good run from her wide gate so I think she's racing for 2nd again. Doomben 8-4 Azzaland faces his biggest test today at his first run in metropolitan company. He's been donkeylicking them down at Toowoomba and steps up to 1200m for the first time. He'll run along in front and will have to hold out Woody 'N' Buzz to win but I think he's up to it.

SELECTIONS - 23 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canberra 3-10 Hotcase [10]
Canberra 8-2 Yinyang [18]
Geelong 7-5 Kinroe [1]
Mackay 4-10 Shincess [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canberra 7-10
Mackay 2-7
Scone 3-1, 3-11, 5-14

Comments: Well I potted the POOMA yesterday, it was heavily backed and flogged them so I'm a good judge. Canberra 3-10 Hotcase just missed two starts ago at Goulburn before an excellent 3rd from an outside draw over this course last time. Has to contend with a wide draw again but local hoop Kevin Sweeney should get a good run for him and he looks a fair chace at nice e/w odds. Canberra 8-2 Yinyang whupped a Maiden field first up. You can see the strength of an RB62 race compared to that, as he rises 1.5kg (from a set weight race). If he went to a Class 1 then he'd have less than today's 59.5kg. He's drawn well and has the Barb Joseph polish so he's my quaddie anchor for the meeting. Geelong 7-5 Kinroe was a POOMA selection last time out and went like a three-legged crab. This is a harder race but maybe he'll improve on the all weather track at Geelong - he'll need to. I'll probably stick him in quaddies but he's not a one-out shot. Mackay 4-10 Shincess won easily in weaker grade at Home Hill two starts ago before another easy win in this class and over this course last time out. Only rises 0.5kg in this set weight race so you'd have to think she's a fair chance.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

SELECTIONS - 22 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gold Coast 4-5 Jellicles [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gold Coast 6-3
Hawkesbury 5-4

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Gold Coast 4-5 Jellicles will need a heap of luck to win this one, as he recent form leaves a lot to be desired. If she's $10+ then I might get interested otherwise she can run without me.

Black Book: Anyone who saw Cagey Lady's unlucky 4th yesterday would have wondered whether Roger had backed it, thus cruelling her chances. Sure enough, later in the day Roger sheepishly admitted that he had put money on, which explains the horrible ride she was given by Williams.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

SELECTIONS - 21 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 3-1 Sporting Fella [18]
Murray Bridge 7-1 He's A Class Act [18]
Sandown 6-18 Mondera [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 2-3
Murray Bridge 7-5, 8-3
Rosehill 1-1
Sandown 6-4, 8-5

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 3-1 Sporting Fella only has to overcome his wide gate to win again. It's hard to read where he'll end up in the run given the field size and where the form comes from but if he can cross to outside the leader quickly then he'll be there at the business end. Murray Bridge 7-1 He's A Class Act won easily first up and then repeated the dose over this course last time. Rises slightly in grade and weight but should go close again at around $3. Sandown 6-18 Mondera looks a fair chance in this after a couple of good runs from a spell in what looks like an even field. He races forward so will need to find a spot from his wide draw but Craig Williams should see to that.

Black Book: Belmont 4-7 Cagey Lady ran well first up before apparently losing a leg last time out. That was a slow track so she simply ran like a typical Bletchley Park in the wet - legless. Because of that run we'll get nice odds today so it's worth having an e/w bet.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

SELECTIONS - 20 March 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Taree 5-2 Jacob's Spirit [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Pakenham 1-1
Taree 5-7
Townsville 6-5

Comments: Today does not look like much of a day for having a go. Taree 5-2 Jacob's Spirit won over 1400m here three starts back, was beaten by Casino Bob at Port Macquarie two starts ago, which is fair form, and then won again at Kempsey last time out. Has always been a consistent customer and $3.40 on the morning line looks about the right price.

Monday, May 19, 2008

SELECTIONS - 19 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Muswellbrook 9-13
Wangaratta 7-3

Comments: The weekend was "2nd leg disaster" for my quaddies. I started the unwelcome roll on Saturday by, in an effort comparable to the wisdom shown by Custer at Little Big Horn, left Gorky Park out of the quaddie. He was only 6/1, the shortest of the legs, too. I only had 3 in the 3rd leg, as well, and lobbed Romping at big odds and then had the first 4 home in the last leg. That was $15K that went begging. Sunday continued the misery missing the 2nd legs of the $23K quaddie at the Sunshine Coast and the $19K quaddie at Port Augusta; both were eminently pickable. Nothing today and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Sunday, May 18, 2008

SELECTIONS - 18 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kalgoorlie 7-11 Galadria [10]
Queanbeyan 3-4 Sebony [10,13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Coffs Harbour 4-3
Hobart 2-5
Horsham 2-5, 2-10, 5-11, 7-1
Kalgoorlie 1-1
Mornington 2-5, 8-4, 8-5
Port Augusta 2-1, 5-8, 6-4
Queanbeyan 3-3

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: After a few days without a selection we have a fair few today including at Darwin. We'll probably need a couple to win to finish in front. Kalgoorlie 7-11 Galadria ran well two starts back before a flat effort last time. Has drawn wide and she looks an e/w chance at best, though if she gets out to silly odds then I might get interested. Queanbeyan 3-4 Sebony killed them in his last start win here over 100m further. Stays in the same class, which is always an advantage and looks a big chance to repeat the dose.

Black Book: Good work yesterday with 2/5 for the black book at $10 and $8. Sunburnt Land showed a terrific turn of foot and might be up to a decent race over the sprint distance let alone over a staying trip if Matthew Ellerton keeps him fresh. M Novara was a good pick by me, even if I say so myself, as he jumped a lot in grade and still got home ahead of the odds on favourite. We'll keep following him for a bit, as he was tough yesterday. Queanbeyan 5-3 Waterfront Lass is only getting 9kg from the topweight, Zupaone, which doesn't seem enough so I expect her to run 2nd at best.

Saturday, May 17, 2008

SELECTIONS - 17 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 4-2 Inarticulate [18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 2-1, 3-3, 3-7
Doomben 1-10, 8-2
Flemington 4-1, 7-15
Morphettville 2-11, 7-7
Toowoomba 2-10, 4-10
Wodonga 3-8

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 4-2 Inarticulate won under a Full Nelson again last time and looks like he'll do the same here at about $1.30.

Black Book: Belmont 4-2 Inarticulate is also a black booker. Flemington 1-2 Hasta Manana was horribly ridden at Warrnambool last time, covering more ground than the early explorers before running 2nd. He'll be around $5 again, should have a nice run with Durden up and I expect him to get home (unless it pisses with rain and the track in slow/heavy come the first race, which seems unlikely). Flemington 5-6 In The Shadows got the chocolates for us first up at nice odds. He's been under-rated by a lot of people but not by me. This is a harder race but he seems to have depth so expect him to be in the finish. Flemington 5-16 Sunburnt Land takes on In The Shadows after a facile first up win at Sandown in a mid-weeker. I'm surprised that Ellerton has kept him to the six furlongs but it must indicate that the horse is flying so he'll be going in all of the multiples. Both of those horses have to beat the topweight, Stanzout, which goes very well first up and down the straight. Those are the three horses I'll take in the quaddie. Kembla Grange 3-6 Mr Novara was a beaten POOMA last time out. 4kg claimer, Heather Poland, rode him that day and she couldn't get him around the corner at Gosford, losing a heap of ground from his good settling position and then getting home nicely. Jumps in grade and has a senior jockey on and I expect him to go well.

Friday, May 16, 2008

SELECTIONS - 16 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Grafton 9-7 Mercado [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bendigo 3-14, 5-2
Grafton 6-13, 8-5
Ipswich 7-8, 7-9
Mt Gambier 7-9, 8-7, 9-2
Wagga 4-4, 5-6

Comments: Grafton 9-7 Mercado has raced well enough at two runs from a spell to suggest he'd be a chance in this at e/w odds. If Leica Plateau is right then he might take some tossing, as he's 2/2 first up.

Black Book: Ipswich 3-2 Mini Maizing had exactly the run I anticipated but couldn't quite reel in the horse I nominated as the danger last time at the Gold Coast. Mary's Magique will cross him and lead and he'll get his chance to run her down late. Looks a fair quinella bet, for mine.

Thursday, May 15, 2008

SELECTIONS - 15 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Mt Gambier 4-2 Rocky Camp [13]
Northam 6-2 Clasliyev [6,18]
Rockhampon 8-7 God's Rival [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 9-1, 9-2
Gosford 4-5, 6-2, 6-6, 9-4, 9-6
Mt Gambier 7-3
Northam 1-1
Rockhampton 1-1, 2-9, 4-2, 6-12

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: I must admit that I'd appreciate it if jockeys could show more initiative on our horses and not get stuck behind slow ones when it's obvious that they're going to become an equine roadblock. Let's hope today's hoops can give our picks a clear run. Mt Gambier 4-2 Rocky Camp got home first up and then ran well last time. He doesn't win out of turn and there are a few with some talent in this so I am not at all interested in the $2.40 on the morning line. Northam 6-2 Clasliyev showed promise in his first preparation before returning with a terrific effort at Ascot and then winning softly last time over this course at short odds. He'll go back from his wide draw and I expect him to round them up in the final furlong. Rockhampton 8-7 God's Rival made it 2/3 since moving north from SE Qld when winning over this course last time out. That wasn't much of a race but has drawn well and should get a good run so should look a chance at the finish.

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

SELECTIONS - 14 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 6-3 Great Destiny [14]
Devonport 7-2 Top Return [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Balaklava 7-3
Sunshine Coast 6-7

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Man, yesterday was certainly unwelcome with only 1/5 and was even worse as it looked like four of them were really strong chances. Devonport 7-2 Top Return finally won his Maiden over this course on a bog track last time out at his 12th start. Maiden to Class 1 is the biggest jump there is so he can run without me. Belmont 6-3 Great Destiny sees the 2008 debut of System 14 leaving only System 5 to open its account. He usually takes a few runs to find his peak and then maintains it, as a hat trick of wins last preparation shows. Won a similar race at Bunbury last time out and the provincial form is holding up really well in town so I expect him to go well.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

SELECTIONS - 13 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Townsville 4-1 Roy's Joy [10]
Townsville 4-2 The Muse [7]
Townsville 5-4 Sparkling Ruler [6,7,13]
Townsville 6-4 Mister Stevens [6,7]
Townsville 7-8 Casa Domani [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moe 1-1, 8-7
Townsville 7-2

Comments: A bunch of POOMAs and the situation that annoys me - multiple selections in the one race. Townsville 4-1 Roy's Joy was narrowly beaten by a POOMA selection that day in Lamp over this course three weeks ago however I don't think he can beat Townsville 4-2 The Muse, which flogged a Maiden field at his first run in the region since coming from SE Qld. Townsville 5-4 Sparkling Ruler has won 3/4 since moving north and looks pretty well placed to rack up another win though I wouldn't want to take less than $3. Townsville 6-4 Mister Stevens is one of the area's flying machines but has bumped into a sharp field here to try and break his duck in Open class. He's not as good a horse as the topweight, Sea Zulu, but that horse isn't suited over 1000m and has to give him 3kg. Prince Of Steel also has an excellent record over this course so he can't be ruled out either. Looks a great race and we should get OK value. Townsville 7-8 Casa Domani looks the weakest of today's selections on paper. He rises sharply in grade but plummets in weight so given his good record at the track and trip should be in with a chance.

SELECTIONS - 12 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Goulburn 7-1, 7-3

Comments: A couple yesterday were given shocking rides but after a great Saturday we did expect a coming back to earth...nothing at all interesting today.

SELECTIONS - 11 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Edenhope 4-5 Kelmo [13,16]
Geelong 5-4 Falvette [16]
Kalgoorlie 5-1 Malleeroot [18]
Sunshine Coast 8-5 Acquired [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Edenhope 7-3
Hobart 10-1, 10-10
Geelong 7-12, 8-3
Gunnedah 5-9, 6-1, 9-5
Kalgoorlie 4-8, 5-5, 6-12

(* Any updates at Kalgoorlie later on *)

Comments: Well, I said yesterday looked like a good day to have a go. All 3 POOMAs landed, as did 2/3 black bookers with the other, Vormista, running 2nd to Apache Cat as predicted. Courtesy of Phil Purser I had an all up in Brisbane on Dawn's Pride ($31.70) into Fulmonti ($5.70), which was a terrific result. I also had a sneaky $20 place all up at Hawkesbury and they all landed, which returned nearly $900. Naturally, the next few weeks will be punting Hell... Edenhope 4-5 Kelmo has had a change of stable and steps up to 2000m for the first time. Has two placings from two runs at this track and should run well. Geelong 5-4 Falvette looks pretty well placed in this race. She's an on pace runner and that tends to suit horses at this all weather track so I think she'll go close to leading throughout. Sunshine Coast 8-6 Acquired dropped in grade and ran an OK 2nd over this course last time. She should have a good chance in an even field. Kalgoorlie 5-1 Malleeroot took 9 runs to break his duck and when he did he had to share it with Eden Park in a dead heat finish. These RB62 races are not much stronger than Maidens, as I've pointed out before, so he should have a good chance at e/w odds.

Black Book: Sunshine Coast 6-3 Forbes has had a change of stable and moved north after doing all of his racing in Victoria. If he's anywhere near right then he'll steam over the top of these.

SELECTIONS - 10 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Caulfield 3-7 Not A Copy [15]
Doomben 7-1 Apache Cat [12]
Hawkesbury 7-2 Royal Discretion [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Caulfield 1-2, 3-7, 7-7, 8-4
Gold Coast 1-5
Hawkesbury 2-1, 4-7, 8-6, 8-8
Morphettville 8-4

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: I like the look of today. I reckon there's money to be made. Caulfield 3-7 Not A Copy has a win and four 2nds from his last five starts. That was his only win from his last 16 so he doesn't win out of turn but he was run down late by a smart horse (and one of our black bookers) In The Shadows, which is good form for this race. Doomben 7-1 Apache Cat hasn't looked like being beaten in his last three runs. Steve Arnold reckons Swick can beat him but that would be a surprise even though he ran 2nd to Apache Cat first up last time in. Hawkesbury 7-2 Royal Discretion looks a terrific chance to notch up another black type win with Tenant's Tiara looking the only threat.

Black Book: Belmont 6-1 Inarticulate was badly held up before getting a gap and scoring by a much smaller margin than he should have. Won't be a price we can back. Doomben 7-8 Vormista is racing for 2nd with Apache Cat in the race. Toowoomba 5-5 Azzaland is up in grade again but the way he wins you'd think he'll do so again.

SELECTIONS - 9 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canberra 2-8, 7-10
Cranbourne 8-1, 10-10
Orange 7-2, 9-5, 9-11

Comments: We were a bit unlucky not to finish in front yesterday but that's how the cookie crumbles. No POOMAs today and there's not really anything that grabs my attention but using a quick filter for country races throws up Mackay 1-7, 7-8 and Orange 1-4, 3-3, 4-1, 6-7.

SELECTIONS - 8 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Northam 7-2 Pete The Profiler [18]
Townsville 3-5 Blue Fairy [6]
Townsville 4-2 Our Mistake [10]
Townsville 6-4 Mighty Mite [13]
Townsville 7-8 Celestial Lad [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bendigo 5-14, 6-1
Kempsey 3-5, 5-2, 9-2
Northam 5-2, 7-1, 7-3, 7-4, 8-2
Wyong 7-2

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Northam 7-2 Pete The Profiler was back in grade for his first up run over this course two weeks ago. These RB64 races are not much harder than Maidens so he can definitely win again. Townsville 3-5 Blue Fairy did well for a win over this course when resuming. Doesn't have much of a winning record but has drawn the inside so should go OK again. Townsville 4-2 Our Mistake also resumed from a spell last time for a good 2nd to a smart horse. Doesn't seem to go that well 2nd up but if he runs up to his last effort then he'll win this. Townsville 6-4 Mighty Mite goes well at this trip and has run three placings from three first up runs in the past. Resuming at 1400m is probably what he needs and around $3 seems the right price to me. Townsville 7-8 Celestial Lad looks an each way chance at best and it would actually be a surprise if he won, though a pleasant surprise, as he'll be $10+.

SELECTIONS - 7 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sunshine Coast 7-9 Spanglish [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canterbury 6-2
Strathalbyn 7-3

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Our POOMA yesterday sat three deep and then went so wide on the corner that I counted 7 horses on his inside. You can't do that and win a race unless youve got lengths on the rest of them. Sunshine Coast 7-9 Spanglish resumes from a spell in a race she can win. In her last two fresh runs she's been beaten 2.5L and 2.6L both on rain affected going. Gets in here with no weight and I expect her to go pretty close at OK odds.

Black Book: Sunshine Coast 8-1 Decerto is a smart horse and if he's anywhere near right then he'll be winning this, 59.5kg and all. He'll lead from his inside draw and should hold off More On The Toe, which will flog home into 2nd.

SELECTIONS - 6 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Sale 5-3 Kinroe [1]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballina 1-10, 6-7

Comments: Well, after bagging it a bit, our POOMA landed yesterday at Alice Springs though the even money was too short for me. Sale 5-3 Kinroe looks pretty well graded in this race given he's dropping in grade on his last three runs. Has had a freshen up and goes well after a spell so should run well here.

SELECTIONS - 5 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Alice Springs 2-2 Gold Magic [6,7,18]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ararat 5-3
Ipswich 3-7, 4-10, 8-13
Narromine 7-3

Comments: I don't like the Darwin or Alice Springs tips but we're committed to providing tips wherever there's a TAB meeting. Alice Springs 2-2 Gold Magic took 9 runs to break her duck in that region after moving from Queensland. She was a beaten favourite at 5 of those runs including running 3rd of 4 as a twos-on pop. She'll be short today and I'm not too interested in backing her even if she is selected by three really good systems.

Black Book: One of our POOMAs, Mr Novara, goes into the BB after a 4th that showed he clearly needs a senior jockey, as the 4kg girl couldn't handle him on the bend and he lost a heap of ground before running home hard. Anyone who backed Sunburnt Land yesterday would have been on happy terms with themselves all the way through the race. He settled nicely, got a run at the top of the straight and put the issue beyond doubt inside 200m, winning comfortably. He's a smart horse. On the other hand, his stablemate Pure Beauty had every chance so she comes out of the BB.

SELECTIONS - 4 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gosford 6-1 Mr Novara [18]
Penola 3-4 Rocky Camp [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Devonport 2-8
Echuca 5-4, 6-14
Gosford 7-6
Northam 5-9, 6-4, 8-4, 8-6
Penola 2-9, 6-3, 9-2
Sandown 2-8, 6-8
Sunshine Coast 9-13

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: After a few days without a selection we have a fair few today including at Darwin. We'll probably need a couple to win to finish in front. Gosford 6-1 Mr Novara won his first start here over 1000m back in March. Has a 4kg apprentice in Heather Poland on board and she's won a couple from her 22 starts so hopefully she can give us a good run in this. Penola 3-4 Rocky Camp won first up in what was probably a harder race than this at Edenhope. Goes well 2nd up and at this track so should go pretty close.

Black Book: In The Shadows did the job for us again yesterday at a nice $4.70. He's been a terrific earner for us. Sandown 6-2 Sunburnt Land is one of my two long range Caulfield Cup tips. He's got a big finish and will get a soft run from his good draw. He might be a bit short, though, as he's a bit of a spruik horse. Sandown 7-7 Pure Beauty ran a good race for 4th at Morphettville last time. She might be double figure odds and should be a chance here. Could be a nice price Ellerton double.

SELECTIONS - 3 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ipswich 4-4 Orpen Angel [4]
Randwick 8-1 Racing To Win [12]
Toowoomba 2-3 Eye Max [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 1-1, 2-9
Morphettville 6-7, 7-7
Newcastle 10-1, 10-7, 10-18
Randwick 1-1, 8-1

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Ipswich 4-4 Orpen Angel is going for 3/3 as a POOMA selection after being picked at her last two starts by systems 8 & 10. Ipswich is a stronger venue than Toowoomba and she's up against some OK ones here but if she runs up to her last start effort then should go OK though I'm not going anywhere near the $1.50 on the morning line. Toowoomba 2-3 Eye Max led and got caught in the last hop last time over 1000m here. Should lead and will look to be in the finish at the top of the straight but the last 100m might be a worry. Randwick 8-1 Racing To Win looks the goods here and while he'll be short I expect him to win comfortably.

Black Book: Moonee Valley 6-7 In The Shadows got the money for us at $14, $6 and $5 in 5 runs last time in before running at Group 2 level when I recommended against backing him. First up last time in settled in the back half of the field before running them down late at the roomy Sandown track. He drew wide that day so went back; he can sit closer around here and be a great chance again. Also in his favour is that he's 2/2 in the wet, which is no surprise given he's by Toy Pindarri. Don't worry about the fact he's 0/3 at the track, as he's drawn poorly each time and one was the G2 race that was beyond him.

SELECTIONS - 2 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Armidale 5-6 Miss Henrietta [19]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Armidale 4-2, 5-5
Mornington 4-1, 8-2
Wagga 4-2, 4-10, 5-11, 8-1

Comments: Armidale 5-6 Miss Henrietta has a 21212 record from 5 starts so her owners have had a lot of fun. She's never drawn a decent gate in her life but comes from 3 here. She's run 2nd at both of her first up runs and all she needs to do to win this is run the same race she did first up last time in. The danger looks to be 9-Stylish Mist, which should put value into multiples, as 5-Save A Buck will probably start favourite.

Thursday, May 01, 2008

SELECTIONS - 1 May 2008

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Wagga 6-9 Brado's Boy [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Wagga 6-7
Warrnambool 1-5, 7-1
Wyong 1-2

Comments: Well, our POOMA yesterday was beaten a head and the black booker, Hasta Manana, was beaten a wart in the last hop after a horrible ride from Bill Williams. Mind you, he could have given it the best ride of all time and it still would have been beaten, as my mate Roger (formerly known as my good mate Roger) backed it thus killing off its chances. He sent me a one word SMS after the event - "Sorry". It's no coincidence that the POOMAs did so well in April and that Roger didn't back many. POOMAs in April had a field day with 53 individual selections returning $95 (79% POT) from 20 winners (38% s/r). Wagga 6-9 Borga's Boy looks like a good value pick. He'll get a good run from his gate 3 and Kevin Sweeney is riding well so he should be in the finish.

Black Book: Warrnambool 9-6 Samadji has let the side down at his last couple of runs. Strikes a slow track here, which may not suit so I recommend not to back him, especially as a smart horse with good wet form like Yappa is in the race.
