SELECTIONS - 31 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Balaklava 1-5 So Ready [21]
Balaklava 3-6 Oro Rojo [7,23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 3-6, 6-15
Townsville 3-1
Werribee 5-1

Comments: Balaklava 1-5 So Ready will probably start the outsider of the four horse field but will appreciate dropping back to seven furlongs from eight. If there's an OK pace then he should be there at the end. Balaklava 3-6 Oro Rojo really should be winning this race if he's to have any future with the Hayes' stable. Normal stable rider Paul Gatt is on the first starter, Spoonmaker, so they either think it's a good chance or want to take advantage of the 3kg claim on our pick. In the Werribee Cup I think there are only two chances: 1-Baughurst and 7-Saliente.

Black Book: Werribee 3-7 Greatwall Of China ran up on the pace from a wide gate in a strong 3YO race at Caulfield and in on the limit weight he looks a good hope in this.

SELECTIONS - 30 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Charleville 2-10 Nine Covers [23]
Charleville 3-6 Sea Going [10]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Benalla 5-2, 7-9
Charleville 5-5

Comments: We're batting 0/3 with our POOMAs at the Charleville goat track with our selections having run 4th, 5th and 11th and never looking likely in the run. Sea Going looks to be the best of these two today.

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

SELECTIONS - 28 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Northam 1-3 Averroes [23]
Port Lincoln 5-2 Onemusttakearisk [13]
Port Lincoln 7-13 Our Marbelle [3,19]
Terang 8-4 Ransom Willy [22]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Launceston 5-7
Port Lincoln 6-12
Northam 6-2
Sale 9-10

(* Any updates at Northam later on *)

Comments: Northam 1-3 Averroes dropped back to provincial company and flogged a Maiden field in sharp time. He looks the goods again here depending on how good Pillow Time is. Port Lincoln 5-2 Onemusttakearisk seems to have found his mark in this area and the step up to 1200m should be OK. He's odds on this morning, which seems a tad short but he won in this grade last time and might be too good again. Port Lincoln 7-13 Our Marbelle gets her chance to win a race. I'm not too sure she has much intestinal fortitude so wouldn't want to take a short price. Terang 8-4 Ransom Willy steps up quickly to 1600m and given his front running style I'm not convinced he should be favourite. It's not a strong field so if he gets a soft lead then might be a chance. Be warned, though, the system that picked him has been in dynamic form and is due for a loss.

Black Book: Port Lincoln 4-5 Yoshi's Opal snuck home to win her Maiden last time out with David Tootell sitting coolly and not resorting to the whip. I don't know whether she resents it or not but she's not going to go too far if she can't handle pressure. However, I'll assess her after this race.

SELECTIONS - 27 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Moonee Valley 4-4 Miss Andretti [23]
Rockhampton 4-3 Cougar Trick [23]
Rockhampton 5-1 Massiah [3,23]
Rockhampton 6-1 The Hand [23]
Yarra Glen 6-2 High Costalana [6]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 2-3, 5-1
Hobart 4-4, 6-5, 7-3, 7-6
Kembla Grange 2-7, 7-10
Moonee Valley 4-3, 9-3
Morphettville 6-2
Rockhampton 2-4
Yarra Glen 7-3, 7-7

(* Any updates at Ascot later on *)

Comments: Moonee Valley 4-4 Miss Andretti might be a little risk here today. Gold Edition will lead and doesn't have to go quickly with a bunch of backmarkers behind her. Miss Andretti will be right on the speed and should get her chance to run Gold Edition down. The issue I have is that she tends to be first up at 1000m and has to go 1200m today, which might make her vulnerable to the swoopers at the end. Gold Edition has had a little setback and her run last time might have flattered the runner up, Royal Asscher, which runs around as favourite in race 3 and might also be a vulnerable horse today. We'll see. The other POOMAs look to have a fair chance with The Hand probably being the best of them.

Black Book: Ascot 9-7 El Presidente was good first up and should have won last time out when being badly held up and then interfered with late in the race by the winner, against which he protested unsuccessfully. The step to 1400m looks ideal and I expect him to win. Moonee Valley 3-8 Jestatune was a bit horrible last time even though it was a Group 1 race. W Pike gets back on board today and that might help her chances though this will be his first ride at the tricky MV circuit. Moonee Valley 9-10 In The Shadows has been terrific for us, as I seem to say every time he goes around. He steps into Group 2 company but it's really only a Listed race in terms of quality and I think he might be competitive today given he'll be right up the front.

SELECTIONS - 26 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ballina 4-3 Felixtrinidad [13]
Cairns 1-1 Gunners Barracks [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ballarat 3-6, 3-7
Bordertown 6-7

Comments: Ballina 4-3 Felixtrinidad was beaten as an odds on favourite last time in a field containing most of today's rivals including the three that finished in front of him. All of the horses have had an enforced month off due to EI and all but one are up 150m on their last runs. 1400m is his go so he should just about get home. Cairns 1-1 Gunners Barracks was a bit weak last time when 4th behind Scorpio Star. That said, he's probably better suited at this shorter trip so is probably a legitimate $1.60 shot.

SELECTIONS - 25 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Geraldton 1-2 Divine Comment [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 1-1
Geraldton 3-3, 7-7

Comments: Geraldton 1-2 Divine Comment won as an odds on favourite in a small field last time in this grade. She's a consistent mare and must have a chance again though the odds on price on the morning line is unattractive.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

SELECTIONS - 24 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Gawler 4-5 Star Touch [13,16,23]
Geelong 6-8 Sunburnt Land [13,22]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Gawler 4-4
Geelong 2-6, 3-5, 3-10, 4-6, 5-2, 6-8, 9-1
Northam 8-3

Comments: Gawler 4-5 Star Touch won nicely first up and the step up in trip looks suitable in this small field. He's nicely bred and needs to win today to live up to his potential. Geelong 6-8 Sunburnt Land is in our black book and is in the Master O'Reilly category from a year ago. He's an up and coming horse that has taken a long time to mature. As long as jockey Chris Symons is sober then he looks the goods in this. The Geelong Cup field looks like a country cups field to me. The EI outbreak means that the field is weakened without interstate contenders going around. I'll go for 18-Iris In The Glen to continue Danny O'Brien's good recent run.

Black Book: Geelong 1-1 Adam's Peak rounded them up in the sytle of a good horse when winning his Maiden 3 starts back and then wasn't disgraced in town. This race is short of his best but look for him to be running on. Geelong 1-6 Ibtism beat a good horse when winning at Swan Hill and then was a tad average on A slow track at Bendigo. Went for spell and I expect him to show up here.

SELECTIONS - 23 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kyneton 8-6 Oh Eight Hundred [22]
Mt Isa 4-2 Golden Time [13]
Mt Isa 6-2 North Alert [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kyneton 5-2, 5-6
Mt Isa 1-5

Comments: Kyneton 8-6 Oh Eight Hundred looks pretty well graded to return to racing with a win. First up last time in she ran 7th of 13 in a 3YO Listed event behind Blitzem Reilly and if she runs up to that she should get home. My Isa 4-2 Golden Time has won 6/7 since moving north from NSW including his last 5 on the trot. Steps out in Open company for the first time but looks up to it. Mt Isa 6-2 North Alert is in consistent recent form and looks a pretty strong chance to bring up a hat trick. He's won a couple of Class 6 events in a row and drops 2.5kg for a tilt at Open company, which he won in 4 starts back at this track with just 1kg less.

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Comments: One ruffie and nothing else worth looking at. Save your money for another day.

SELECTIONS - 21 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Clare 1-7 Soap Star [25]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Hobart 1-3, 10-1
Seymour 1-7

(* Any updates at Albany after final details are in *)

Comments: An amazing day yestarday at Caulfield with more drama than a year's worth of TV soapies. I thought that Maldivian would win with my long range tip (who went into the Black Book in November last year), Master O'Reilly, running 2nd. As it turned out, Eskimo Queen chose an unfortunate moment to display her break dancing skills and Maldivian was so appalled that he tried to slash his own throat. All of that let Master O'Reilly win in dominating fashion after a first class ride by Vlad Duric. This horse will when the Melbourne Cup, as well, even with a 3kg penalty and, as it happens, I have a Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double running at good odds - the only double I took. In another stroke of good luck/judgement I also managed to back Selsley with a $50 e/w bet in the last at Morphettville. This is a horse that for some reason - perhaps it's the fact that he's almost white and physically large - I've followed for quite a while. He actually has some talent but at recent runs has been appallingly handled by jockey D Robinson. The change to Stubby Holder was significant, as he let the horse flop out the back and brought him with one run. The $75 win and $16 place dividends were well received by me and the other fellas at the TAB who backed him.

Clare 1-7 Soap Star has had a change of stables recently and drops in grade on recent runs. Sits up on the pace and the drop back in trip must help her chances but when a horse has had 5 runs and is yet to run a drum you don't want to be taking too short a price.

Black Book: Seymour 10-16 Cognac Bay is a talented but injury plagued galloper. First up he settled back in the field in a slowly run race and ran home OK to finish 7th of 14 beaten 4L in what was a strong race. I'll assess his BB status on this run.

SELECTIONS - 20 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Ascot 3-10 Summer Haze [26]
Canberra 2-4 Star Acclaimed [23]
Canberra 4-2 Magic Dot [10]
Canberra 6-5 Voice Commander [23]
Morphettville 7-10 Last Word [10]
Port Macquarie 2-2 Centre Fire [23]
Port Macquarie 5-10 Eireplay [10]
Rockhampton 1-1 Renaissant [10]
Rockhampton 3-4 Muthaiga Club [10]
Rockhampton 9-1 Danzamonkey [15]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Ascot 3-4, 9-9
Bendigo 1-6, 6-3
Canberra 8-7, 8-8
Caulfield 1-7, 3-3, 7-13
Launceston 6-9, 7-10
Morphettville 3-7, 4-3, 5-6, 5-8, 7-2
Port Macquarie 4-9, 5-14

(* Updates at Ascot after final details are in *)

Comments: Too many selections to comment on but they all look a fair chance. I selected Master O'Reilly as a Caulfield Cup contender last November so it was a good call way back then and he's been in our black book for nearly a year. Maldivian should just whup them but if there are any chinks in his armour then Master O'Reilly might be the one to find them.

Black Book: Ascot 6-14 Westerly Breeze was just OK first up against a good horse in El Presidente but steps up to a more suitable trip this time. There looks to be a bit of pace in this race, which will give her the chance to unleash her big finish. Caulfield 5-2 Vormista is a really good mare and had them covered a long way out last time. Should just about get home again. Caulfield 5-13 Guild will probably lead this field and even though she's stepping up significantly in grade is still to find her level so she might be a place chance. Caulfield 6-3 Stanzout finally had a bit of luck go his way and reelled off a quick last 400m to win, surviving a protest along the way. Should go close again with Shadoways the danger again.

SELECTIONS - 19 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Innisfail 5-2 Lidiana [21]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: Innisfail 5-2 Lidiana has won 5 of her 8 starts since moving north from NSW and has run placings at the other 3 so connections must be pleased with that. She'll go to the lead, as she normally does, and take a fair amount of catching. She has to carry the sack of spuds known as Todd Pannell but given he's won 2 from 3 on her she's obviously an easy horse to ride. I'll go for the other Lion Hunter horse in the race, River Hunter, to lump his 61.5kg into 2nd place.

Black Book: Mornington 8-1 Scenic Silver looks to have umpteen classes on these and with the claim bringing him in with just 1.5kg over the limit I expect him to win.

SELECTIONS - 18 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moe 3-14, 4-1, 5-4
York 5-1, 5-5, 6-2

Comments: Any updates at York after final details are in. There could be a POOMA there. UPDATED

Black Book: Port Lincoln 2-7 Yoshi's Opal kicked off her career in a strong (for Port Lincoln) Class 2 race and beat home a number of multiple winners to finish 2nd. She then dropped to a Class 1 event, started favourite and ran a poor 5th of 7. Desperate for a win, she ran in a Maiden race and ran 5th of 8 as a $2.80 shot. On the basis of her first run she must have some talent but if she doesn't get home today then I'll reassess her BB status.

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

SELECTIONS - 17 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Northam 3-3 Le Bon Jeune [23]
Northam 6-9 Gallivanter [23]
Northam 7-1 Eclusier [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Caulfield 3-7
Murray Bridge 6-7, 8-10
Northam 5-4, 8-3

Comments: Northam 3-3 Le Bon Jeune has run three good placings in provincial class with a duck egg in the city first up. He might be a chance today but With The Ring, which beat him home clearly in that city run, seems hard to beat. Northam 6-9 Gallivanter is probably best suited over slight further but this is not a hard race for him first up. Northam 7-1 Eclusier doesn't have much of a winning record with just 2/25 but is always thereabouts so should be a chance with The Pontiff to ride.

Black Book: Caulfield 3-3 Greatwall Of China thundered home to win at his first start before running a distant 3rd in what has turned out to be a strongish form race from MV. Got home hard first up at Bendigo and the step up in trip looks ideal. Caulfield 6-1 Jestatune had absolutely no luck last time out in the Edward Manifold and looks very well placed to run a good race. Absolut Glam also had no luck in that race and must be a fair chance, too.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

SELECTIONS - 16 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Charleville 1-1 Verge Of Discovery [13]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Warrnambool 6-4, 6-7, 8-11

Comments: Charleville 1-1 Verge Of Discovery is the first POOMA selection for System 13, which I've reintroduced after the final 2007 review. System 13 killed us when it was live and then killed us when I suspended it by performing like a champion. Hopefully, this will be third time lucky. I don't like apprentice jockeys on selections over the 800/900m trip and that's what we get today at the goat track that passes for a race course at Charleville. The horse does go fast so should be a reasonable chance if the jockey can get him away cleanly.

FINAL 2007 SYSTEM REVIEW

With two and a half month of the year to go it seems a prudent time to cull some of our non-performers and give one or two others a go. Comments in black below are from the 27 May review and the red comments are the new changes.

Review of systems:

System 1: 9/27 at a slight loss is OK and it will stay with us. It's long term live performance is 47/129 (36%) at 41% profit and it's current performance is nothing that hasn't been seen before. Hasn't been able to lift its game and is now 14/51 at -30% POT so we'll suspend this one even though it's ahead long term.

System 2: It's only had 4 selections for 1 win so it's too early to tell. It can stay. Good call, that. It's now 5/10 though only at a small profit.

System 3: Only had 11 selections and its 36%/0% performance is below the long term 46%/26% live result so it can stay. Touch and go whether to cut this one adrift. Even though it should probably go I'll keep faith, as it has shown a profit year on year so far.

System 4: 0/6 means it can take a break. That's well outside expectation. Hasn't performed at all since being culled proving it was a good decision.

System 5: 1 selection for a miss so it can stay. Is now 1/2. Given how few selections it has I probably shouldn't have included it in the list but it can stay.

System 6: Only 5 selections so we'll stick with it. Another good call, as it's now 6/15 at 33% POT.

System 7: Currently 7/19 at a 37% loss but has a terrific long term record and I expect a turn around so it stays. Has improved to 14% loss and I'll keep it in.

System 8: Definitely can't complain about this one's performance. It's higher than expectation but not by too far. 7/11 at 66% profit is not too shabby.

System 9: Also going OK and I expect POT to improve a bit. Another with not enough selections but it's ahead so it will stay.

System 10: Been a very solid contributor returning a 36% profit from its 49 selections. It obviously stays. Has been off the boil since the last review with profit reduced to 15%. The variation is within expectation so I'm not going to can it.

System 11: Nothing to complain about with this one. It's been a good long term performer. Still going well but it would be nice to have more selections.

System 12: 12/19 and a 26% profit might look like it's overperforming but it's actually right on expectation
. This one has had a poor 4/17 run since the review and is now in loss. I think I'll suspend it.

System 13: Ahhhhh. Disaster. What has happened here? I'd like to think that it can recover but it's so far below expectation or history that it seems unlikely so it can take a rest. Of course, since being suspended this one has gone on a terrific run of 23/44 at 40% profit including one streak of 7 wins in a row and one of 5. Will I bring it back from suspension? OK. OK. I will. With misgivings.

System 14: Another that's really put a dent in things. The trick with this system is that it's got a really good 41% strike rate but the short price of the winners has seen it deliver a 30% loss. I think that it can take a rest, too. A good call, as it's a dud.

System 15: 1/9 is waaay less than expected but it's only 16% behind and can make that up with one winner so we'll stick with it. Has picked up its strike rate but is now 25% behind. Its performance is within expectation so I'll keep it.

System 16: POT is a bit low but that should improve. And improve it has; to 50%.

System 17: I really thought that this one would be better that what it's delivered so it can go. A completey legless system, really. I was clearly way too optimistic including it in the first place.

System 18: Looking at its results you'd think that this one, aimed at 2YOs, would go also but it's been through runs like this before. A touch and go decision. It can go. Not many subsequent selections, as there haven't been many 2YO races, obviously.

System 19: This is actually my favourite system out of all of them but has only hit 1/7 with a $1.60 winner. It has a terrific 45%/90% result from more than two years of selections so I expect it to hit back. Has only added 2/3 since the review and is still behind but I'll keep it in.

System 20: Going well, a long way above expectation, so I expect it to cop a short losing run to bring it back to the mark but that's OK. Only 3/5 at 60% POT so it can stay.

Summary of the new systems added in the mid-year review:

System 21: After a slow start has recovered to be only -0.5% behind so it can stay.

System 22: Chugging along at a nice 4/5 at 36% profit so it's picking shorties but they're winning.

System 23: Another that started slowly, built up nicely but has dropped back a bit to be 3% ahead.

System 24: I probably made a mistake including this one, as it tends to work by having $10+ horses arrive every so often. Unfortunately, there hasn't been one for a while and it's a fair way behind so it can go.

System 25: Yet another slow starter that has hit back to be 9/28 at 34% profit.

Summary:

Systems 4, 13, 14, 17 and 18 will be replaced by five different systems 21, 22, 23, 24 & 25 from May 28, 2007. The overall results will include the systems that have been replaced. Systems 1, 12 and 24 can go. System 13 returns and I'll bring in Systems 26 and 27 from the reserves' bench.

SELECTIONS - 15 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Echuca 4-2 Stormy Hunter [24]
Echuca 8-1 After The Fact [24]
Mackay 6-2 Jazzoom [2,11]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: Three selections today. Stormy Hunter and Jazzoom will be shortish so we probably need two of the three selections to lob in order to finish in front for the day.

Sunday, October 14, 2007

SELECTIONS - 14 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Emerald 2-2 Danzamonkey [15]
Geraldton 1-2 Trib [23]
Geraldton 5-7 Voyager [7]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cranbourne 1-2, 1-7, 1-15, 1-18, 4-4, 4-10, 10-4
Emerald 3-3, 6-6
Geraldton 1-3
Kilmore 6-10
Naracoorte 7-11

(* Any updates at Geraldton later on *)

Comments: Geraldton 5-7 Voyager is not that well in at the weights given a few of his competitors beat him home last time out. If he's around $8 then I might have a go. Trib and Danzamonkey look like they'll be unbackably short.

Saturday, October 13, 2007

SELECTIONS - 13 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 9-2 El Presidente [23]
Townsville 9-8 Gunner's Barracks [2,11]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 1-7, 1-9, 2-4, 5-6, 6-1
Caulfield 7-12
Darwin 1-1
Townsville 3-5, 4-3, 6-10

(* Any updates at Belmont later on *)

Comments: Belmont 9-2 El Presidente keeps on keeping on with five wins on the trot. Was very impressive first up and there's no reason why he can't make it six straight. Townsville 9-8 Gunner's Barracks flogged them at Cairns last time albeit in a small field. As long as he can get a good run from his wide gate then he'll be too good again.

Black Book: Belmont 9-2 El Presidente - as above. Caulfield 3-8 Little Arrow settled 5th and was a bit one paced in the straight. This is no harder, really, so she should be a chance at e/w odds. Caulfield 8-3 Lazer Sharp went like a crab first up and then followed up by going like a drunken two-legged crab last time. Needs to show something today to stay in the BB. Caulfield 8-5 Master O'Reilly got too far back last time while Maldivian pinched a march on the field up front off a slow pace. Should just about get home today. Werribee 8-1 Secret Flyer gets back and has a big finish. I think he's a nice horse and expect him to win.

SELECTIONS - 12 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Wangaratta 7-1 More Than Regal [24]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Moonee Valley 2-7, 5-5, 6-2

(* Any updates after final details at MV are in - UPDATED *)

Comments: Wangaratta 7-1 More Than Regal has been consistent without winning in the last 12 months and doesn't look that well weighted here so I'd want $8.

Black Book: Moonee Valley 6-5 Formal Attire stepped up in grade and met a pretty good field last time when strongly backed late. He sat deep from his 10 gate, which isn't normally an issue over the Sandown 1000m and didn't finish off as expected when 7th to Satin Robes. He did come up the straight on the worst part of the track, I thought, so I'm not prepared to pot him on that run. The issue tonight is that he hasn't won over 1200m since his first start Maiden win and is up against a good one in Sanjuan but he'll be in the firing line on the corner so must be a chance.

SELECTIONS - 11 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

There are no POOMA selections today

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mt Isa 4-2, 7-1
Northam 4-6, 7-4

(* Any updates after Northam final details are in - UPDATED *)

Comments: Only my mate Roger will want to have a go at the Mt Isa goat track today so wish him luck. Our black booker yesterday, In The Shadows, took his record to 4/8 since he went into the black book about six months ago returning nearly $30 for the win and $12 the place so he's one of our favourites. As long as connections don't go overboard in terms of class he can keep winning.

SELECTIONS - 10 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Belmont 2-1 Rose Of Dante [6]
Belmont 3-1 The Future [23]
Strathalbyn 5-1 Blackstone Rose [12]
Strathalbyn 8-2 Craic [25]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Albury 3-1, 5-2
Ballarat 6-10, 7-3, 7-13
Belmont 1-4, 4-4, 6-5, 7-12
Devonport 4-2, 7-6
Strathalbyn 6-2, 7-14

(* Any updates after final Belmont details are in - updated *)

Comments: Belmont 2-1 Rose Of Dante got home hard from back in the field to win her first start at Northam in fast time. She started favourite that day so had obviously shown something on the track. I'd prefer to see her over 1200m and with a 4kg rise in weights would want to see $6+ to back her. Belmont 3-1 The Future is the most experienced of these runners with 7 starts and is the only one to have won a race. Nearly won in Saturday company last time and drops in weight for what should be an easier assignment so should be in the finish again. Strathalbyn 5-1 Blackstone Rose went out odds on in a race that looked too short for her given her racing style and thus it proved as she steamed home into 2nd spot from well back. 1200m suits today and she looks the goods. Strathalbyn 8-2 Craic is in a new stable with Jon O'Connor. He led them up over 1200m first up and weakened late for 4th so it's hard to assess how he'll handle the step up to 1400m. The $3.50 on the morning line looks too short.

Black Book: Ballarat 6-7 In The Shadows has been a terrific BBer for us winning 3 from 7 at good odds. Led them up at MV last time and looked a fair chance on the corner before being swamped late for a 0.7L 4th. Has the up and comer, Barlinnie, to beat, as well as the Australasian mile record holder in Drac's Back not to mention the other talented front runner, Test Fire, so he'll be a chance but I'd want $5 to back him.

SELECTIONS - 9 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Bairnsdale 1-12 Whatabella [22]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Nil

Comments: Bairnsdale 1-12 Whatabella might have finally found a race she can win though when a horse has had 13 starts and only run 6 placings it's a bit hard to get too enthusiastic. $2.50 seems about the right price and the danger looks to be On The Blink.

SELECTIONS - 8 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Cairns 1-3 Silver Fun [11,15]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Cairns 1-5
Pakenham 6-4

Comments: Cairns 1-3 Silver Fun has been beaten by Gunners Barracks at their last two clashes but meets that horse 4.5kg better for a 3.8L defeat and 4kg better than when he finished 0.7L behind him last time out so that will give us a chance to turn the table at good odds in the small field.

SELECTIONS - 7 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Benalla 5-10 Lady In The Sun [24]
Hobart 4-3 Esterel [23]
Gawler 3-1 Bellbookandcandle [7]
Toodyay 3-7 Bak Me Bak [25]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Benalla 4-5, 4-6, 6-6
Gawler 7-8, 7-9, 8-3
Hobart 7-2
Toodyay 2-1, 7-2
Warrnambool 1-5, 2-8, 3-1, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 7-2

(* Any updates at Toodyay (!!) after final details are in - UPDATED with POOMA *)

Comments: Benalla 5-10 Lady In The Sun looks pretty well placed in this race. She'll sit close to the pace and be thereabouts at the 200m so if she can get the 1400m will be a fair chance at good odds. Hobart 4-3 Esterel is working up to another win and looks like he has a fair chance in this. Gawler 3-1 Bellbookandcandle

Black Book: Benalla 10-12 Cognac Bay might have been some sort of horse if he had have made it to the races earlier than he did. We've made some good money on him and he'll be a good chance in this.

SELECTIONS - 6 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Canberra 7-4 Vintage Rock [1]
Murtoa 5-8 Remonstrate [24]
Port Macquarie 5-6 Heavenly Glow [16]
Rockhampton 1-1 Muleskinner [3]
Rockhampton 8-3 Harley George [23]
Rockhampton 9-3 Go The Red [3]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Canberra 4-5, 7-4
Darwin 1-1, 2-1, 3-3, 5-1
Flemington 7-6
Morphettville 7-5
Murtoa 6-2, 7-1
Port Macquarie 6-4, 10-2, 10-8
Rockhampton 9-4

(* Any updates at Belmont after final details are in *)

Comments: Canberra 7-4 Vintage Rock won easily in this class last time out on the Acton track. The drop back to a mile won't be against her and she looks a top chance again. Murtoa 5-8 Remonstrate looks really well placed to run a good race at e/w odds. She gets back in her races and gets home well so the step up in trip looks suitable. Port Macquarie 5-6 Heavenly Glow looks reasonably graded in this RB70 event. She flogged a Class 1 field at Taree before a disappointing 4th there last time as favourite. Should handle the step up to 1400m. Rockhampton 1-1 Muleskinner has been a bit disappointing since winning last year at Thangool (!) and Monto (!). The step up from 1300m to 1800m is probably a bit of a sign that connections are sick of him and are looking to see whether he's better off over a staying trip or in a can of Pal. Rockhampton 8-3 Harley George cost himself the race when running wide on the turn at this track last time out behind super mare Regal Megan. He's been a beaten favourite at his last four runs, including three as an odds on shot, so he's no friend of punters. He really should get home in this, though. Rockhampton 9-3 Go The Red has been in good recent form, will settle off the pace and make his bid for victory 400m out. He nearly beat Danzamonkey last time out and that's a pretty good form line for this race.

Other: After deleting five systems and adding five others on 29 May and bagging 'Unlucky System 13' for being a serious under performer it responded, once it was removed as a POOMA, by going on a terrific burst that has seen it rack up a 22/40 record subsequently at 48% profit including a run of 7 wins in a row. Murtoa 7-1 Sylvan O'Reilly comes from System 13 today so might be worth watching to see whether decent odds are available.

Black Book: Flemington 5-12 Sunburnt Land is up in grade but down 5kg in weight. He really flogged them in a much weaker race last time but showed that he's come back to racing in the form that I expected last preparation. He's 12/1 on the morning line but I'll be happy with half those odds. Flemington 6-12 Vormista proved that I have a good eye for an up and comer when she got within a half length of the flying Gold Edition at 20/1 last time. The 1410m looks ideal and I think she'll win. Flemington 7-3 Jestatune ran a nice race for us behind Gabbidon when hitting the line hard. The step up in trip is right up her alley and I expect a big run. Flemington 9-12 Stanzout finally returned to his right grade last time and ran home well for 2nd. He's back to Group 2 company here but this is not a spectacularly hard race so he might be a chance. Morphettville 1-1 Periduki won 5 from 5 at Alice Springs before going to Morphettville for a 1000m race, sprinting to the lead early, setting up a huge margin and winning by a space in the manner of a good horse. Won't be great odds today but will be worth watching to see how he goes.

SELECTIONS - 5 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Mackay 1-6 Brinkley Light [10]
Mackay 2-2 Paris Boy [21]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Mackay 3-1

Comments: Mackay 1-6 Brinkley Light has had two runs since moving north from SE Qld for a last start win over this course in a Class 2 handicap. This Class 3 set weights event looks suitable and he should go close again. Mackay 2-2 Paris Boy has been in consistent form with only one blemish so far in his 7 start career. Has had 3 starts over this course for a win and two 2nds and I expect him to feature in the finish again today.

SELECTIONS - 4 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Charleville 4-2 Fuel 'N' Water [10,23]
Charleville 6-1 Pakiki [10]
Narrogin 3-8 Divine Star [21]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geelong 8-1, 8-17
Narrogin 2-2

(* Any updates later on - UPDATED with POOMA *)

Comments: Charleville 4-2 Fuel 'N' Water has won 3/4 here and looks pretty well placed today. Will be short at around 6/4 but that seems about right. Charleville 6-1 Pankiki also has a good record at this track but doesn't look as well placed at the weights compared to Gidyea Coals and a couple of others. Narrogin 3-8 Divine Star drops in grade here, which might help her improve on her 1/14 record. She'll sit on the pace and should be a fair chance though I don't want to take less than about $3.

SELECTIONS - 3 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Mt Gambier 1-7 Gralan [25]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Geraldton 1-1, 3-2
Moruya 5-3
Mt Gambier 3-4, 4-5, 7-4, 7-5
Seymour 2-3, 3-2, 3-5

Comments: No selections today to follow the 2/3 yesterday returning $8.70 with the other one finishing 3rd and paying a useful $3 the place. Whoops - a senior's moment. There is a POOMA at Mt Gambier.

Black Book: Moruya 7-5 Waterfront Lass has had 4 runs as a BBer and returned $3.90 though we weren't on her for one run at Randwick after she proved at Canterbury that she's no good on slow or heavy ground. She stormed home over 1000m last preparation for 2nd but you'd think the 920m would be too short for her today.

SELECTIONS - 2 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Kyneton 4-12 Miss Maren [25]
Kyneton 5-12 Electromotive [25]
Townsville 6-2 Goldmore [23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kyneton 3-7
Townsville 9-3

Comments: Kyneton 4-12 Miss Maren has had one run in Open 2YO company in NZ in which she finished an OK 7th of 14. She must have shown something if trainer Mick Price has picked her up so I expect a good run. Kyneton 5-12 Electromotive was easy in the market before an even 5th of 12 at Cranbourne in a harder race that this. She plugged a bit to the line that day but with improvement should be a fair chance. Townsville 6-2 Goldmore blotted his copybook somewhat with a duck egg in Class 5 company last time out. He was 11/2 that day and with the drop back in grade should go close again. Might be a quinella with Gulaga, which he dead heated with two starts back.

Monday, October 01, 2007

SELECTIONS - 1 October 2007

POOMA selections (Location Race#-TAB# Horse [system/s])

Moe 9-10 Vankedisi [10,23]

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Belmont 4-3
Cheltenham 3-6
Moe 1-3, 9-2, 10-2, 10-7

Comments: Moe 9-10 Vankedisi returned from a spell with a big Maiden win at this track 24 days ago. She's by Catbird so should handle the heavy and it's worth noting that the cats have won everything this weekend.

Black Book: Belmont 9-7 Westerly Breeze raced through the grades last preparation and showed her class when stepped up to Group company. Is 2/2 at the trip and I expect her to run well. Belmont 9-8 El Presidente also raced through the grades at Bunbury at his first preparation, winning three times for us. Is also 2/2 at the trip so it should be a good battle with Westerly Breeze.
