SELECTIONS - 3 October 2006

POOMA selections:

Kyneton 7-2 Yappa

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Kyneton 6-10

Today: Only two meetings to contend with today. Our POOMA obviously has the SSY form, as he's the Y in SSY. His form is really strong having run 2nd to subsequent winner, Bon Hoffa, last time and knocking off Suspects at his previous run. He should be able to dictate terms from his good draw and I expect he'll be too good. Jetera ran 7th in the same race as Yappa last time behind Bon Hoffa so he must be the quinella chance. There are a couple of other SSY runners to follow: 3-8 Zuna started 15/8 and ran 3rd to Suspects last time, which followed a 3rd to Maximgun and subsequent winner, Showify. In that race, 12-Nashita, drops a trillion grades and looks the one to beat. 5-5 Bellini Rose ran 8th of 16 beaten 4.2L behind Bon Hoffa and Yappa last time when first up from a spell. That's a pretty good run in a strong race and even though she steps up a grade in this she looks right in the race. I'll be interested to see whether there's any support for 6-2 Grandiloquent from the John Hawkes' yard. He steps up 550m in trip at his second start from a spell but you'd have to think that if he was anywhere near right then he'd go close. The meeting at Kembla Grange is quite unattractive but if I can get black and white figures about 8-1 Dothisdothat from the O'Shea establishment then I might be tempted.

Yesterday: Hope you had something on Pulse Maker at Bairnsdale, which had the Suspects' form even though it had been beaten 13L, as it paid $10+ for running 3rd. Quite a few flops yesterday with Coco Roca going out $1.50 favourite and running like a three-legged rocking horse that's lost another leg. Never, ever got in the race, which was won by the one we picked as the quinella horse. Up in Brisbane, Sovereign Dream went out long odds on and was always in trouble when it got caught deep, ending up in 2nd spot. Horses that have no tactical speed and aren't backmarkers are always a risk so taking the short price was not an option. Obesure was heavily backed in the last race up there and landed the prize late meaning that if you were unwise enough to back all of the selections I listed you'd have made money.

POOMAs: We correctly picked that our selection, Amici Forever at Bairnsdale, would lead them up, which is something he's never done so far. However, it took him the first 400m of the mile event to get there and that effort just took enough gas out of the tank to find him wanting in the last 100m where he got collared, boxing on well to finish 4th beaten only half a length.
