SELECTIONS - 10 August 2006

POOMA selections:

Bendigo 6-3 Burning Arch

Non-POOMA selections (and ruffies in red below):

Bendigo 4-2, 5-6, 7-1
Gosford 3-11, 6-1
Townsville 7-8

Lay of the Day: Gosford 3-10 Elista $2.60...with a great deal of trepidation, as there's really nothing in the sub $3 brigade that looks particularly vulnerable today [LOTD 4 from 5]

Today: Townsville 7-8 Stricty Smart ran an unbelievable race for 3rd last time behind Sea Zulu after starting from gate 16 and carrying 59kg. He ran 2nd in that race last year and then came out and won this race, leading all of the way. He should get a soft lead and be hard to run down. The POOMA, Bendigo 6-3 Burning Arch, looks like a good e/w chance in an open race. From the all-conquering Moody camp, Nolen aboard, drawn well, coming off a good run last time...looks a good chance. Currently $5.40 on the morning line but I'd suggest about $4.50 is the right price. A slow track at Gosford always brings with it a fair degree of punting hazard. However, if 6-1 Calm Hero repeats his Maiden run then he'll win again. He poked along at the rear in that race, swept around them at the top of the straight and disappeared through the mud to win by 7 lengths. As always up in northern Queensland you should look out for southern horses making their debuts or coming off a pipe opener in the area. 1-5 Two Dogs fits into the former category and must be a chance. 5-1, 5-3 and 8-3 are in the latter category and all look to be in with a hope.

Yesterday: Had one quaddie in Brisbane for one result and then backed Curbyourenthusiasm in the last in Sydney in a quiet day with very few backable races. Manaroo Lue won the Hurdle nicely enough in the first at Sandown to suggest that he's got a future as a jumper and I reckon that Soi Cowboy should head that way, as well, after being beaten in the 3000m flat race. The horse has certainly not lived up to his 4th placing in the Derby behind Plastered and Savabeel.

POOMAs: Don't know what happened to Safari Sunbeam. She travelled well in the lead until the 400m mark at which point she was put under pressure and the first horse beaten.

LOTD: The Lay of the Day, The Collector, managed to quickly get into a perfect trailing position from his wide gate and missed out on winning by a narrow margin. Picking losers is more stressful than picking winners!
