Around $4 yesterday for Sea Zulu was amongst the best value I've ever seen on a racecourse. Perfect analysis with Captain Wheland leading and Sea Zulu crossing from his wide gate to get a good position, which he used to launch his winning run entering the straight. Captain Wheland is a good horse but how he could start favourite is beyond me given he's suspect at 1200m in good company. The run of the topweight, Strictly Smart, to get 3rd was sensational under 59kg and from the extreme outside barrier 16. He has won 25 from 52 and over $300K prizemoney for what must be delighted connections.
You'll see a good horse in the first at Ballarat. Illustration was off the bit on the corner last time. Ollie got stuck into him at the top of the straight and then rode him out pretty much hands and heels for a soft win. There's not a heap of speed here, which will turn it into a sprint up the straight so the horse wouldn't want to be off the bit and chasing on the corner again given he'll probably be about $1.20.
The all-weather track at Canberra (called the Acton track) has been a revelation. Very fair racing on a top surface has been the order of the day. Ones to watch are 2-1, 3-1 (could be really good), 4-4, 7-14 and 8-7.
